Foil SUP / Re: Balancing on Barricuda Style Boards
« on: April 10, 2023, 11:06:00 PM »

Ironically I have gotten used to the 21" wide x 7' 9" board.  Mine is 128 liters and I am pushing 190, but much more weight with full wetsuit, booties and camelback with camera . . .
How tall are you Beasho?
I am 190 lbs  6'2" and I struggle on my 8'2" x 22"board....

I put a 500 anhedral rear for max lift since I was trying to lift by paddling in the glass out front.  Jeremy put me through some drills and even tried out my rig to show me that it will lift as well as tuning me into foot placement.
So what is the verdict on the rears? Was it a good idea to use the 500 anhedral?
I really didn't get to use it enough before I flew to the mainland for my surgery to know or compare it against others, like the 460.  Surgery went well but looks like I have a few months of rehab so I'll be depending on you guys to send in some feedback.  Right now I lent my 1310 to a hotshot foiler for him to give me as much feedback as possible.
Get well soon!
I have only small Axis rears and have to decide what bigger rear to get flying on flat water and to maximize the pump...
I was thinking about a 475 or 500 progressive
Please tell us what your hotshot friend thinks.

Here I'm tightening up the base plate on my 1310 yesterday so you can see what it looks like.  I put a 500 anhedral rear for max lift since I was trying to lift by paddling in the glass out front.  Jeremy put me through some drills and even tried out my rig to show me that it will lift as well as tuning me into foot placement.  A great day in crystal clear water.
So what is the verdict on the rears? Was it a good idea to use the 500 anhedral?

the old "pump-pump-paddle" 2 to 1 strategy is working really well for me.  If I have to dig out of a hole I'm paddling 1 to 1 like you are, but as soon as I get a little speed and enough height on the mast, going to 2:1 is really smooth and efficient.  I can go a long time like this.
What length paddle do you use for that?
I have a minus 12cm (5") paddle and it is too short to paddle when I am flying.

Foil SUP / Re: Changing to F-One foils? Would love some advice!

I've seen the rear wing break from a jump and I've seen the fuse break off the mast. Plus I hate how they turn in jibes but that's a personal thing. It seems like you're sold on F1 tho so you should go for it. Not all foils work for everyone hence why they're so many out there

It seems you are sold to another brand.
We have 4 f-one carbon Phantoms and they are great in every way, turn in jibes very nicely and never had any damage.
And we also have kujira'and Axis foils....

I still have a Molokai blade and you've convinced me to glue that back in and give it another shot for foiling.
I broke 2 Molokai blades years ago, on the connection with the shaft that was before foiling.
Kenalu was great with warranty. I have a mana 90 now but I still have a Molokai blade and another shaft so I will give it a try....

I hear the popular kids are using the "Quickblade Ono Ava 105 SUP Foil" these days
Supposedly it has a bit more angle to the blade which helps keep power a little deeper into the stroke.  Its also quite large.
I had the V-drive 101 and UV88, the catch in the 101 is much better. The UV88 for sup foil, felt like not having a blade after using the v-drive 101.  The 101 has 10º and the Ono ova 15º blade.
I would  order a big ono ova if they had a better shaft and/or warranty policy.
I ordered a V-drive 101, took 3 month to arrive and it was broken in half in 1 month trying flat starts. The answer, no warranty.
I would not recommend to spend much money in a big paddle until you master the technique, actual SUP paddles are not ready for the increased initial resistance of sup foil. I may be wrong, but this was my 3rd broken shaft in a year.
I broke a few big bladed paddles years ago and switched to a smaller blade.
Now I am trying to get up on the foil on flat water and very small not braking waves and I was thinking of getting a QB Ono Ova.
But I don't feel like breaking a paddle esp without warranty.
How much do you weigh Pafoil? And can you just replace the shaft of a QB paddle? QB doesn't have a stronger shaft as an option?

I'm sure there are computer programs that can easily model this and give us a proper answer...

The guys at Inde Foil have done the work for you.

https://www.indefoil.com/foildesign/mast-thickness-drag

As I said they only compared a 12 mm to a 19 mm mast and not a 16,1 mm to 19 mm mast.

9
NoLimitz is comparing a 19 mm mast with a 12 mm mat but their mast is 16,1 mm thick!
Nolimitz concludes: At 0 degrees yaw and 50% mast immersion, a 2-5% increase in overall drag can be expected in the 10-25knot range when using a 19mm mast as compared to a 12mm mast.

Probably the difference between a 16,1 mm and a 19 mm mast is very very small , that might be the reason that they compared a 12 mm mast to a 19 mm mast and not a 16,1 mm.

The increase of control with a stiffer mast is more important when you weigh more than 80 kg imo.
Unfortunately they didn't test the stiffness of the NoLimitz mast against the Axis mast , perhaps they did but its not on the website.....

10
NoLimitz now has an axis version, and looks incredible.  Lower drag, light and plenty stiff.

Please share!

Did you try one Beasho?

Make sure your mast to fuse connection is tight. I’m not talking about the screws. You want the fuse to mast connection to press on. No wiggle.

Carbon surfaces wear. Everyone has to tune up older carbon parts to keep them tight. It’s very easy to tune up the Axis carbon mast head. A little epoxy on the side face of the head for just a little tightening. A layer of 4 oz fiberglass for more tightening. FYI 4oz fiberglass is .005 inches thick.

Same goes for all brands. GoFoil hex needs repotting. Armstrong needs repotting. Armstrong created the + system to delay the issue. But it will need tuning up eventually. Same with SAB mast head.

Carbon/epoxy matrix wears. A fact of life. Much easier to tune up than a loose aluminum connection.

This stuff matters as we go high performance, more than ever.
The connection between my carbon mast and my fuse is very very tight.
I have to lean on it with all my weight to get it in.

I tried the 999 yesterday, 86 cm carbon mast short fuse 420 rear with a 3m2 wing.
I had a hard time jibing , this must be because of the flex of the the 999 ...
Also when  pumping with the wing flagged I was not in control and had to be very careful not to be too heavy footed.

I switched to the 930 and all was fine.
I will test the 999 again with an alu mast, perhaps the combined flex of the carbon mast and the 999  together with a meter span is just too much(for me @ 85kg)

The  Wing Foil World Cup is in Fortaleza Brasil now.
Freestyle is already finished today they will probably race.
The man's freestyle was won by Titouan Galea the women's freestyle by Bowien van der Linden.

Foil SUP / Easiest Axis foil to paddle up in flat water?
« on: October 24, 2021, 06:05:56 AM »
So what is the best Axis foil to paddle up in flat water for a 85 kg (190  lbs) rider?

I tried the 1150 (1713cm2 projected) but no success, will the BSC 1120 (2007cm2 projected) be easier to get up ?

And what fuse length and rear?  Should I get one of the older rears like the 440 or even the 500?

kdmaui says If you buy, make sure you use the aluminum mast to get the best results

I wonder how stiff the Axis v2 carbon mast is compared to the Armstrong and the lift carbon masts.
And also how stiff it is compared to the Axis v1 carbon mast?

The Armstrong 725 and Lift 120  are not as wide as the Axis 999:
According to the Lift website the Lift 120 is 775 cm^2 and has an AR of 10.2 :
wingspan^2=10.2*775
This gives a wingspan of 88,9 cm
I suppose the Armstrong 725 has a wingspan close to the Lift 120
Will 10 cm less wingspan make these two wings not need a stiff mast like the Axis alu mast?

And will the Axis v2 carbon mast be better with for instance the HPS 830 because of its smaller wingspan?
Or is the weight of the rider the only factor to consider when deciding between the carbon and the alu mast?
