Happy New Year everyone,

I noticed the 2022 Sprint is redesigned with a new hull shape: https://sup.star-board.com/paddle-board/hard-paddle-board/sprint/

It now looks awfully similar to the Waterline! https://sup.star-board.com/paddle-board/hard-paddle-board/waterline/

I wonder if the folks at Starboard realized that the 2021 Waterline was indeed faster than the 2021 Sprint for most paddlers?

Flatwater and Touring / Re: Sore Feet
« on: June 08, 2021, 03:19:15 AM »
This has probably been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything when I searched ... After about an hour of paddling on the raceboard, my toes/feet start getting sore/numb. I try to move my toes and shuffle my feet periodically, but still after an hour I'm feeling it.

Thinking about trying to find a thin piece of hi-density foam to provide more cushion & comfort. NSI seems to have a pretty good selection.

Has anybody tried this, and can say what worked for them ?

I have an odd question for justsomeguy...by chance, do your have a Morton's toe (when the 2nd toe is longer than the first toe)?

SUP General / Re: Inflatable vs Hardboard: performance
« on: May 29, 2021, 04:37:24 AM »
I do many days a week for fitness snd fun, at 260 thr Starboard Airline and (borrowed) Starboard Dual Chamber Touring have both been a lot of fun. I am starting to stay above 5mph on the Airline too. It's slower the my unlimited but so easy to deal with. Its super durable against rocks etc. I find it about as stiff as my 2015 Red Elite at 25 psi and way more stable so way more fun.

That's really moving. The Airline, racing Shark iSUP, and 2020 or newer RS Air Glide with hard pointy bow all appear to have true displacement bows for flatwater speed. My 2019 RS Air Glide is basically an iSUP raft and is always planing. Still, my best 2-mile avg. speed is 5.03 MPH and 4-mile avg. speed is 4.78 MPH.

IMO, everyone's first SUP should be an inflatable. They are just so forgiving to drops, bumps, and other 'accidents'. Sure, they may be slower than a comparable hard board but their versatility really provides an extra layer of forgiveness for newbies. I'm on a 'performance iSUP" and sure, it was still way slower than my 14x22 NSP Ninja, but the journey was far more enjoyable. I also launch and dock off a rock so rubbing against vinyl is no problem compared to the awful stretches that an carbon or epoxy board would sustain.

Gear Talk / Re: Anyone Paddle the Starboard Waterline?
« on: May 24, 2021, 03:02:20 PM »
cleanfront - I'm in Loudoun and paddle most mornings on Beaverdam Reservoir in Ashburn. I also paddle on the Potomac between Sterling and Leesburg, VA. I've also done a 8 mile paddle on the Occoquan. I ended up just purchasing a new (2018-holdover) SIC X-14 which I'm hoping to get sometime next week.

Let me know if you ever want to get together for a paddle!

Bump. Also I'm curious if anyone has cross-shopped this against the SIC Okeanos or even the newer Starboard Generation??

With the water much warmer, I headed out for my 2nd adventure with the 22 inch wide Ninja. I did manage to sand down the Larry Allison Fin (perhaps a little too much), so it now fits. This time I spent more time starting out on my knees, and learning how and when the secondary stability kicks in. I did manage 1-hour of shaking paddling without falling. Its surprising how much more tired you are after fighting to stay upright for an hour. A couple of notes:

*I'm at 85kg (187 lbs) and wonder if I'm too big for the board? The nose was pushing through the mirrored water with only the top of the nose above the surface. The board is rated at 250 liters.
**I have to believe the keel fin for Larry Allison was helping me stay upright. I was still shaking but stayed dry (except for my feet).
***About those wet feet. I'm officially not a fan of those drain holes that allow water to rush in when standing still. I can see during a race how its beneficial, but for just touring or anything when the water is cold, this is counterproductive (IMO).
****Of the newer flatwater SUP boards, I'm beginning to think the NSP Ninja has lower stability compared to its competitors (Starboard Sprint, Fanatic Strike, etc.) There is a concave, but its barely noticeable. I'm guessing if I can learn to paddle this thing then I should be able to paddle just about anything.

Gear Talk / Talk to me about Fin Boxes
« on: May 11, 2021, 07:03:12 AM »
I want to install a new fin on my 2020 NSP Ninja. The fin included with the board is a FCS compatible fin. Does this mean all the "futures" fins won't work with my board?

Gear Talk / Re: Nu-2-Me Carolina
« on: April 05, 2021, 07:26:06 AM »
Bought a fix-r-upper NSP Carolina over the winter, and I've finally finished the repairs and gotten it out for a few paddles. Luving the dugout standing position, feels like my feet are right on top of the water. Probably need to shorten my paddle 2-3" now, keep dragging the tip after I finish a stroke and go to reach again. Other thing is that it seems a bit susceptible to cross-winds, I'm attributing that to the flat vertical sides of the dugout, maybe 1.5-2 sqft of area? Haven't had it in open ocean or small surf yet, but looking forward to it.

Curious how stable the Carolina is at 25.75? I'm looking for a stable all-water board and this might check all the boxes.

Copy ...report back, and good luck.

Jim

Unfortunately, the Larry Allison fin does not fit. It's very long, and seems a bit thicker than most FCS fins. I even got out my rubber sledgehammer to drive it into place but its just not happening. Bummer.

Gear Talk / Replacement Neoprene Rail Handle (for NSP Ninja)
« on: March 20, 2021, 12:43:37 PM »
I need a replacement Neoprene Rail Handle for my new Ninja, problem is, its not for sale on the NSP USA Webshop. I contacted NSP directly and they said "maybe" it could be ordered but would take 45+ days.

Question, are these rail handles 'universal' or custom to the board? I'll purchase a similar Starboard or similar brand handle if that's a viable option.

Thanks guys,
Dave

SUP General / Dugout filling with water...is the normal?
« on: March 20, 2021, 12:35:08 PM »
My 2020 NSP Ninja has 4 drain holes that "immediately expel excess water from the dugout"; however, I think its doing the opposite, and actually filling the dugout with water. Is this normal?

Noted...stick with the Larry Allison...got it!

Loudoun,  I've had the fin mentioned in this 2011 posting for ??? (Red in color)  ...it also lacks a screw. If you'd like to simply try it send me a PM.  It's yours to test for the cost of postage.

Wow Jim, that is so thoughtful of you...many thanks. I think I'm going to just flat out purchase the Larry Allison "Dolphin Keel 14".  I also found this $39 keel fin for consideration: https://checkout.supatx.com/sup-atx-keel-fin-color-black-length-7-5-free-shipping.html
