I've been enjoying reading your progress, surfcowboy. I was building my wing board around the same time as you and am on a similar wing foil learning curve so reading along with all your progress has been helpful and entertaining. Hoping I can hijack your thread a little bit with some technique questions of my own...

I am up to about session 10 or 11, and am able to get up on foil in both directions fairly consistently and zig zag across the lake. I am using a slingshot v2 6.4m wing and a slingshot 84cm sup foil. I'm 6'3 190lb.  I still need a fairly strong breeze to get going and I'm guessing the wind speed window can be lowered a lot with better technique.

I come from a surfing background, and have never been on foil before this. I found riding switch stance easier because I didn't have to overcome trying to ride the foil like it is a surfboard. I am still able to pump up onto foil a bit better in my normal surfing stance, but once on foil switch feels just as good as regular to me at this point.

Most of my questions are about holding the wing. My most comfortable position is with my front hand on the "transfer handle" that runs perpendicular to the boom and the forward most rear handle. This makes the wing easiest to control for me, but I am assuming just because that is what I have started with and have practiced the most with.

When I move my front hand back to the forward handle that is in line with the boom, should my palm be facing up or down? Would it ever change based on what I am doing?

Am i missing out on available power by not using the handles further back on my back hand?  Or am I just not able to point as high?

I've completed two non foiling jibes out of many attempts. My current sequence is to turn downwind, switch the wing in my hands and then switch my feet. I usually come off at the feet switching part. I think i just need practice here but would take any tips.

Hi surfcowboy, I'm about to start working on a wing foil board and hoping you can give me some guidance... I am using a similar build construction to you. I have a 2lb eps blank with a wood stringer and am going to use 2 layers of 6oz top and bottom. I have a HD mast insert from greenlight. How many layers of carbon is your patch? When laminating the bottom, did you laminate the carbon patch first, and then lam on the 6oz glass? or was it all at the same time?

I also saw you mention connecting the track boxes to stringers in some way. Should I try and route out part of my HD insert for the stringer to go thru? or best to just route out the stringer completely and put the HD cassette in?

Thanks!

Hi Ceeg,

It put a flat edge on the bottom.  There is V at the nose that gradually fades to flat as you move back.  It is flat V with no concave anywhere (I hope I wasn't confusing above - the concave I was mentioning there was deck only).  By the front footstrap the V is ~ 3mm mm and at 2 feet from the tail the V is gone.

Perfect sense, thanks again.

Hey Admin, any chance you could measure the thickness of the 5'4 for me?  I'm making a wing board and am using the skywing as a guide and couldn't find this dimension anywhere.

Hi Ceej,

I measured (no caliper) but these will get you very close:

At the rail: the absolute tail is 4 inches even.  It is 4.5 inches a foot off the tail and a bit over 4.75 at the thickest spot.

The board loses an inch of thickness at the centerline due to concave.  The concave runs through the entire deck nose to tail but graduates with very little at the extreme nose and tail and full dept through (and well in front of) the stance area.  Most of the board has a full 1 inch concave.  You could add a lot of volume if you went with no concave or you could go thinner and lower your center of gravity.

Great info, thanks.  I didn't realize the deck concave was so extreme. I plan to stick with the concave on the deck, but maybe keep it a little more subtle.  I can clearly see the concaves in the V toward the nose on the bottom of the board, but wasn't able to determine what the rest of the bottom looked like. Does the middle section have any concave or V to it? or is it totally flat back to the boxes?

Thanks for the feedback on this new wing, I have a 6.4 v2 slingwing on order but have been on the fence between sizes... I am 190lbs and have a slingshot infinity 84 2000cm2. Do you have an idea what the low end usable wind range for the 5.4 is? I'm a life long surfer and have spent time sailing lasers but never done any wind board sports. I'd like to have something easy enough to learn with but versatile enough to just own one wing. I'll be using it mainly in the Chesapeake Bay and on the east coast. Say 10-25ish knot range.  Any feedback is appreciated.
