That's a clean setup, but I wouldn't want a low pod placement to just use as efoil. I would set pod at 30cm. No problem efoiling and easy transition to foiling with prop free. No way I would want the pod any lower in any conditions I could ride unpowered.

I think the short answer is none of these sizes are designed are for beginner DWers. Armstrong also just released DW boards that don't have any obvious beginner sizes. It makes sense that they don't want to compromise performance in such a challenging sport and risk being labeled as inferior. It will be interesting to see what range of sizes are available when/if the Barracuda production boards are released. DK certainly has made enough customs to have a good idea of what sizes are needed. Wonder if the current E3 will be the default beginner DW model? Likewise Axis has the new hybrid which is a better compromise for beginners than their DW model.

Axis's inverse of length and width is pretty interesting. Could it be that they are more designed to cover a variety of conditions than user weight? Longer, narrower, and more volume could be better for faster bigger ocean conditions while smaller, slightly wider, with less volume could be better for steeper easier to catch wind chop/waves? I'm just speculating. Interested to hear what others think.

Foil SUP / Re: Foil Math Wave Size = 2X + 1 and Big Waves

Impressive. Would love to be able to tow into some waves with my small wakefoil board, but that's looking pretty insane size for mere mortals!! Can't believe I'll ever think yeah I want do that! Great thing about foiling is how fun small waves are. If anything your math is too conservative.

How much does an efoil weigh?

I would imagine the weight of an efoil, not to mention that it is attached to a foil, would pose a hazard to others in the lineup.

Foildrive weighs 8lbs according to their site. Basically makes a light board (both of mine are about 11lbs) more like a heavy one. Efoils are like 80 lbs.

I think the rule should be:

1) If you have a motor you have to take off WIDER than any other surf craft

2) If you are close enough to clearly communicate AKA call someone in or suggest going Right vs. Left then you are too close and need to go further down the line.

#1 was how I always SUP'd when around Prone Surfers.  Taking off deeper on a craft that could paddle faster was verboten.

Yes I agree when using an foil drive theres no need to crowd anyone or be aggressive about taking every wave. I was checking out that spot yesterday, after my post, and it looked amazing. Such a large area to ride with so many wide, long waves, someone would have to really be a dick to get in your way there!

I plan to stay well clear of everyone and still get my share of rides. With the foildrive I could even get out before the tide drops when nobody else can catch waves yet. Just hoping some asshole(s) doesn't ruin it for me before I even get to show up.

"Hey man, don't ride that here. Go over there."

Really?

You need waves (surf or DW) to use a foildrive. It is not an Efoil. Using a foildrive is definitely cheating so some etiquette is important and I look forward to others comments when going out in waves.

I've only gotten out in waves 4 days last fall with the foildrive (I live in the mountains). I was worried about the vibes so I found a spot that I could catch non breaking waves that wouldn't have anyone else out. I was catching waves right away and getting decent rides. Easier than DW in my opinion but lots to learn and can't wait to be confident enough to hit some of the better spots next spring.

Beasho I've had my eye on that spot and would love to catch it sometime, but that place gets super crowded with surfers even when its not really breaking.

Foil SUP / Re: Another revelation about the Barricuda style Kalama board!

Kalama inspired custom from Vince Broglio I just received. 7' x 24" 119L. Has fairly steep bevel (chime) for more flat bottom and a chopped square tail for more stability than a V pin-tail. Vince and I had some back and forth on how close to Barricuda it should be. I feel there are too many copies and not enough variations. Not sure when I'll get to try it out but like what we came up with for an easy to use DW board.

Prone Foiling, Surf foiling, Pump Foiling / Re: The foil drive as an Efoil
« on: September 10, 2021, 11:37:54 AM »
I think that's backwards. Using an efoil as assist makes more sense. Lifts pro board is already pretty light (for an efoil) if they offered an optional battery that was 1/2 the weight and run time along with a mast with a mid mounted motor, that would be a pretty sweet high end modular option. Don't think you could have a different smaller and lighter motor and still have it work with the existing setup tho. For a few extra pounds maybe the full power with shorter run time is worth it. Expensive but hope this is a direction someones developing.

Talking to myself here because no one else will listen  :P

From foilzone, description of foildrive specs: "It’s a 6374 motor 120~300kv, Maytech remote (you don’t need one, you can get a 20$ e-skate remote) you will need a 6s battery, 120~150A 3s-6s RC boat ESC like FlyColor, 3D printed prop, 3D printed mastclamp, you can build that whole setup for less than 300$, please do your own further research, you’re welcome."

I've tried searching around on foilzone and I could never make sense of all the options and how to  research putting it all together. Wish someone would just sell complete wired units (like the Foildrive) with higher end motors and batterys instead of incomplete kits like Flipski sells.

This is a great concept at an marketable price point. I suspect it may not be the best value and trust PonoBill's opinion above. They may be greedy or maybe they just aren't getting very good component pricing. This is a great idea and like most great ideas will be stolen and made better and cheaper by someone else. Hopefully (for them) they are already working on a improved version for the same cost.

Getting the right wind speed is my biggest frustration. Only been able to try twice in the 10-20 range; once standing on sup and then once on knees on foil board. I am hesitant (afraid) to try when it's really blowing (20+). As a beginner seams foolish to go out in really challenging and possibly dangerous conditions. But then trying to ease into it in lighter wind was really hard. The more the wind came up, definitely easier it was. It's hard to think of really strong wind being ok beginner conditions. Makes learning very frustrating.

Foil SUP / Re: E foil

As I said, I see two differents ways on the evolution of the Efoil : flying in flat water using only the power of an engine and the assisted engine which will open up a whole new world, just like Ebike.

French foil, Have you tried it downwind yet? Curious whether it can provide assist without completely taking over sensation of riding swells.

Good comparison with ebike at least from marketing pov. Really like how my mountain ebike increases performance, but is controlled by how hard I peddle. I still feel like I'm making it go just with world class ability. Not sure you can get the same effect with an efoil? Pump assist would be cool if it was possible? Or maybe have a clutch on propeller that engages engine based on drag, speed or height? I'm thinking Efoils are limited to be like a class2 ebike with a throttle. More watercraft than watersport. I'm sure flat water riding is fun but I wouldn't buy for that.

I would hope for something like the boost concept (motor/battery combo) that attaches to a foil mast (instead of fin box) will get developed. I agree with the rest of you that a quick assist to get on foil that doesn't get the way of riding swells would be most useful.

Foil SUP / Re: Progressing from wake foiling to downwind and winging
« on: September 12, 2020, 07:18:27 AM »

You are not able to stand on it in flat water? What size board do you SUP with?

Haven't tried using wing to help stabilize me when standing which should make a dif. I've only tried standing on it once and it was kinda bumpy. Not sure what I was expecting??

I have a SIC Bullet 14x30. Very stable even in choppy conditions. I haven't gone thru the process of reducing board size as I progress as many sup surfers have.

I try to digest all the varied info in this forum and try imagine how it relates to me. Even tho I've made some progress on foil my expectations weren't realistic. But hey if was easy what would there be to post about? Just need some wind and determination. Thanks for commenting.
