Flatwater and Touring / Re: Recommended FLAT WATER board
« on: May 30, 2020, 03:57:23 PM »
Part of the problem you face is that most of the leading SUP shapers are ocean people not inland waters people. There aren’t that many well-known truly flat water brands.
So true! If you're thinking of going custom, check out Flatwater Paddle Co. Mike shaped the Coreban and Lakeshore race boards and has a good reputation for making fast boards. I'm not sure if he's still shaping though.

Another option would be a custom BlkBox Sidewinder.

404, Bark, Infinity, King's, and Riviera are some other good options for custom shapes.

I agree that most of the best SUP builders are going to be people that live near the ocean and will build their boards to handle those waters.  But, there are a lot more companies that make different styles of boards now.

Some of the SUP companies make boards for fishing.  If you fishing, you basically want flat water.  So it might be worth considering a fishing style SUP if you can't find one that is specifically made for flatwater.  Just an idea anyway.

Technique / Re: Is it cheating to sit down in choppy conditions?
« on: May 25, 2020, 10:16:31 AM »
Whatever works for you, it's all good. Most of the time I stand, but if I get caught out and the wind picks up, sometimes I'll sit for a second.

I also have some weird problem, not just with paddleboarding, where my feet cramp up for unknown reasons. If cramping happens I'll sit and massage my feet, then stand up again.

It's about having fun, no one way you have to do it.

These look great. I love that they did not go totally flat and maintained some arc. The arc will make them way more fun to surf.

That looks awesome!  I've always wanted to try a foil board but never have.  One of these days I'll make it happen.

Yeah, I understand this virus thing has screwed up supply chains everywhere.  I got a package in the mail from Amazon I ordered 2 months ago and had forgotten about.  Crazy times.

I tend to think that the board manufacturer probably tested it a bunch and didn't install a vent for a specific reason.  So I wouldn't install one.

How'd you get those screenshots???

If you like that video, you should check out some of his others. They're pretty cool. He's an emt firefighter.

I used Google Distance, then traced his route. I guessed at the finish.
Makes it fun for me to see what people are actually doing on SUP and where.

Then I just took screen shots of the route I mapped out on google distance.

Yeah, I like his easy, relaxed confidence and willingness to do semi stupid things, just for the fun of it  :)

I've never hear of Google Distance, so I just searched for it.  Is it the Google Maps Distance Calculator?  Because that's all I can find in the results.

Well our beaches are finally open.  Excited to legally be out on the water.  After a fun few first rides, I lean into paddle for another wave and then I hear a loud snap, then i fall in.

I am used to falling in but then i look at my paddle.  I got a solid year out of this paddle.  I am bummed as I have really gotten used to this paddle.  Oh well, will be reaching out to Jim to see what my options here are, fix or replace with newer blade.  Does anyone have opinions on the UV blade for sup foiling?  Or others as compared to the Vdrive.

What??  That's a bummer.  What is the paddle made out of?  I've had the same paddle for years, with no issues.

Downwind and Racing / Re: Empty waves of the other kind

When the wind is up and the surf is meh I prefer the path of least resistance. A glide is a glide. Empty waves galore 8)

Nice!  I've always wanted to do a downwinder and haven't had the opportunity yet.  Looks fun.
