Foil SUP / Re: Prone Foil
« on: April 20, 2018, 10:16:30 PM »
So let me ask you this did you start out SUP foiling then riding a foil surfboard. If so how many sessions on the SUP before you transitioned? I've SUP foiled a few times and it's just way too much board to fly and I hate holding a paddle.

PS: Can't stand how SUPers throw the term "prone" around - prone surfing to me is bodyboarding. And prone paddling should be paddleboarding or "arms only" (Dan Mann came up with that one) since many paddlers are on their knees most of the time. No going back at this point as manufacturers have adopted it. So lame.

I guess the main question is can you or do you surf a small surf board?

My father thru me off some rocks and walked away.  I was 5, later become one of those lifeguards in OZ.  Learned to Surf and respect the Ocean in the late 50's still prone surf short boards today at 69..

You might want to stay away from Olowalu, very shallow and mainly a prone surf break.

Well said S4F,
I prone surf daily and only SUP when its marginal. Dealing with the tourists on Maui whom have no idea what t f they are doing you kind of put up with it.

I'm nearly 69 and short and longboard. Have been surfing for 62 years.  if you have neck pain see a good chiro or physio therapist.

Checkout the Stewart 949 series. They are a mid length 7 to 8' high performance board set up as a quad plus trailer.
Incredibly fast and you can pick off the waves sitting out back with the longboarders...

Interesting day.  Paddled out too thousand peaks with my wife on our longboards. Randy was out with his new Dave K design SUP and Key L and a few friends paddled there short board foil into the line up and it was so magical to watch.
They were riding the waves thru the reef then pumping out back to the line up.  incredidle to watch.
Stand up foiling does not interest  me but short board foiling gets me totally stoked.

i am in my my late sixtys and still ride 6'0 shortboard.

Of course you can foil Lpoko but most of the folks go to guard rails so they dont interfere with the local culture.

Bummer, was hoping to see some footage of him SUPing it. I think that's what he's mainly doing these days?

> The biggest shock I got at Uluwatu was how sharp the reef is, seem like I cut myself just looking at it.  Beautiful place, would love to go back.

Amen, that was a huge shock for me too. All the breaks around there, just brutally shallow reef break. I was thoroughly not used to that when I arrived. I'd love to go back with a SUP though since the other big factor, the obnoxiously aggressive crowds of semi pro Australian surfers, would be so easy to avoid now. Just paddle a little farther down the point. At Ulu for example, just a little bit farther to the left/south under the Temple gets to the place that I had the single best day of surfing in my life. Would loooove to try that on a SUP.

Yep.  I noticed that also, and in Fiji to.  Seemed like they were all competing for a shot at the WCT, and even more so when I opened my mouth and they realized I was from California.  Has me reluctant to visit Australia, a whole continent of that vibe would probably feel overwhelming and sad, I empathize with what the aboriginal people went through.

Ahhh, that sound really fun.  I went pre-SUP so didn't see any of that, I have since heard from several people that there are some wonderful SUS spots.

Clay,
Open your mind about the Australians. You might want to check your own back yard about the American Indians before you comment about the Aussie Aboriginies...

Kinda sad really.  Been surfing the Harbor lately and more foil SUP on the water.  There is a few guys that are now called the 3 stooges.  They hang out in the impact zone and are totally out of control dropping in and falling over and seriously scaring the shit out of the regular folks.
I can see lots of problems in the line up with these inexperienced folks..

For you Hawaii folks, Japan is not much further then the Mainland and way more fun.  The ski slopes are pretty well empty Monday thru Friday and some of the best powder is in Guma prefec. at Minakami.
The nicest folks you will ever meet and a whole lot safer....

SUS has sucked recently on Maui and i have gone thru my boards and sails and started back into WS as well as KS.
If its too windy to regular surf then just Sail...People need to adjust.
