Never been to Barbados, but...

...the beautiful island of Martinique (next to it) has some pretty good surf and vibes. The locals are amazing people and the landscape just looks out of Jurassic Park.

I recon i'd love to go there with my SUP boards since I was working when I went there earlier in 2016 and could only take surfboards!

B-Dog, Nah you and Johnny M. on the 8'2". Will loan drysuits. LOL!  ;D  ;D  ;D

No need. I'll be on my 7'11. Making sure i paddle enough to stay warm in our 10ºC air and 12ºC water in my 3/2 or 2mm wetties.
I really hate thick rubber!

Hi again Board Stiff,

I'm happy that you've reached a decision. I'm sure that you'd be loving the board even if it were the 9'5 which is currently the biggest stock size Speeed that Sunova is making. They are that good.
The sizes i suggested were based on my findings when trying the 8'5. I thought it was stable enough for the length and super stable for it's width. I also think that our progression comes from stepping out of our comfort zone and pushing the envelope. Just think of supthecreek: while young at heart, he's not a kid anymore. He's also not a small stature man either. I can almost bet that if, one year ago, we were to tell him that right now he'd be surfing his board, he wouldn't believe it, but the fact is that he is.

It has nothing to do with being a good or bad surfer, beginner or pro. It simply has to do with being ambitious, and pushing yourself to your limits. And this is what surfing is to me, a constant challenge.

I'm looking forward to see some of your pictures flying on your new board!!!

Cheers,
Johnny

Fisher is a really nice kid.
I had the chance of spending about two weeks with him and the other boys at Morocco last year when for the Location X event and he's a really cool cat. From the video it looks like his surfing is becoming more radical.

He's also on the vanguard in what comes to low volume SUP boards, totally on par with Mo and Ian Vaz in what comes to paddling with SUBmarines.

Hey Board Stiff,

I'm 225lb, 6'3 and 36yo.
My board is a tweaked out 7'11 Speeed x 26 3/8" @ 101.6L

While I love it |(it is by far the best board i've ever had) and will go for something even more challenging on my next board, that's not everyone's cup of tea, as i don't mind sinking to my knees and struggling with balance in order to get some more performance.

Having said this, at your size and weight, even having a conservative approach, i wouldn't go any bigger than the 8'5. I would actually recommend considering the 8'2. More than 8'5 and i think you'll be wasting a nice opportunity to try something that is really manageable and surfs incredibly fast and easy.

The Speeed is a phenomenal board, with loads of speed and precision in the way you can surf it and it is pretty stable for it's length. The fact that is has a wide nose and a wide diamond tail with generous hips, make it stupid stable for how wide it is and as soon as you get used to the idea of such a narrow board, it is actually very easy to ride.
The moment you get your first wave on it, you understand all the hype around it and why everyone claims it is different from everything anyone has ever ridden.

Have fun,
Johnny

Good morning good people!

Two years ago my friend Carlos moved with his family to China to chase his dreams and started a tech company with a couple of friends. A couple of weeks ago he sent me an email to help him to share his project amongst my network.

Basically, as it says on the topic, it's a Kickstarter campaign to help funding the production of a multi sport Biometric headphones set. The tech has been created and the funding will be used to get production running (molds and other stuff).
There are only 8 days to go and the main goal has already been achieved, but with some more help, they will be looking into adding a couple more functionalities to the headset.

The reason why i'm sharing this on the Zone is because it may very well be a good product for us SUPers.
While the headset will give us some tools that will be really good for our training, it is waterproof and will be able to relay information from other devices such as watches and GPS bike computers, keeping us from having to stop paddling to know what is happening.

Please have a look on the website and if you like the project, don't hesitate in helping with funding!!

Thanks for your time,

Hi Raf,

Congrats on your new board! I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun on it.
The 2015 version has actually 9 more liters that the 2013 and 2014 boards (the shape didn't change from one year to the other).

I arrived from a trip to the Maldives last week and had a lot of fun surfing epic Chickens on my backhand on the 8'0 Pro.

The fin setup i like the most for that board is the stock side fins which are really good paired um with a FCS PC-5 Longboard centre:
http://www.surffcs.com/shop/surf-longboard/fcs-pc-5-longboard-centre

I use it all the way to the tail end of the fin box (not exactly the end because the metal plate would fall off the fin box. If you try it you'll know what i mean).

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Re: 8'10 Sunova SPEEED
« on: June 30, 2015, 03:12:07 AM »
Hi guys,

First of all thanks for the kind words on the video footage. I'd love to say that it was all about my surfing as i really try to draw some clean lines when suping, but a lot of it comes from the board.
That video was shot on a day where I was demoing some of their boards, i had never tried the board before. The waves, while super clean were completely gutless.

At the time i was one of the Starboard team riders here in Portugal. Since that day, i lost the pleasure of riding my Starboards and I simply couldn't get even close to the speed and drive I felt on the Sunova. I'm not even sure what it is, if the round rails or the lack of hard edge.
Since then, i left Starboard and became a Sunova ambassador and got myself a couple of boards.

I'm 6'3 and 235lb.

I've been away from home traveling and judging some WSL events so not so much time to try the new boards which arrived two weeks ago.

The boards I got were a slightly modified version of the original sizes to accommodate my not so lightweight frame:
- Speeed 7'11 x 26 3/8" @101.6L
- Acid XL 8'2 x 28 1/2" @ 105L

While i've already taken both boards to the beach, the Acid is still to get it's debut as the Speeed is soooooo much fun. The other day though i swapped boards with Tiago from Sunova here in Portugal and his stock Acid 8'2 felt insane - even if i'd sunk it to my thighs if i'd stop paddling.

The Speeed 7'11 has everything i wished for from when i tried the 8'5": smaller, more agile and allows for quicker turns. In the other hand it doesn't have the same glide and drive from the 8'5, but it can also come from the fact that i'm not using the stock fins which are big due to small surf. I'm waiting for some clean decent sized waves to take my conclusions.

After surfing the board for a couple of days and spending time in the line up looking at it, i feel Bert really nailed it: the board is a beauty and surfs like nothing i've ever tried before.
Besides the parallel outline and rocker, i feel there are two parts of this board which makes it "the Speeed" - the hard edge all the way up to the nose of the boards and those deep channels on the tail of the board. Whatever you throw at it, the board will handle without sliding or loosing it's line. I can now go much deeper in my backhand bottom turns than before and still have a lot more speed when i reach the top of the wave.
This is the reason why i'm currently using much smaller fins: you will still have a lot more speed than on other boards, but it will allow you to go for some fins free turns if you really push it (i couldn't set the fins free with the stock fins).

The other thing that really amazes me is that with this board is that if i'm setting the rail to get barreled it enables me to keep an high line like a surfboard would do, but since i'm yet to try the Acid, i can't tell if it is due to the outline shape, the channels, the rocker or the hard edge. One thing is for sure, i've never managed to do it before on other SUB's.

While it is an hand full to paddle for someone my size and weight, i feel i could probably have gone 26" wide or 25 3/4" and still get away with it. Having a narrow board feels so good. I'd say that my previous board (the 2015 SB 8'0 Pro at 28" wide and 105L) isn't any more stable than this one.

I was afraid that the board would become too thick from adding some volume, but in reality it doesn't feel thick as the rails have a really low profile.

When i have some more time on the boards i will try to post a review with some pics and videos.

Cheers,
Johnny

PS.: One of these days i'll try to surf the board finless. I think it's going to be a lot of fun!!!

I've been using these and they're really good.
The thing i like the most is how compact they get when not in use and how easy it is to carry them while travelling by plane.

Sunova makes the 9'6 Style
9'6 x 27 1/2 x 3 7/8 at 112 L

Reviews on Seabreeze rate these boards very highly. Super light and super strong.

What STC said.
Beautiful boards.
Stupid light (i'm talking lighter than carbon starboards at the same volume.
Super refined shapes (thin noses, tails and nice rails).

I have two Sunova boards coming and i have that 9'6 on my to get list!

I've surfed it. And I don't really agree with Linter.
When I first had a look at the board, it didn't really convince me, but I had to try it.

The one I rode was an 8'5 prototype, basically a scaled down version of the production ones. I was told it would be introduced in the market during this year.

It looks like it had a nose very similar to the pocket rocket, with a tail section of either the 7'1 or the 7'4 Pro's.

Quite stable, fast paddling and really nice on a wave. An high performance allrounder with some impressive performance for such an awkward board.

I'm pretty sure that the same philosophy will apply to bigger boards.

The VP fins set seems to be pretty good and customizable to any conditions.

We don't have them in Portugal just yet, so I use the FCS PC-5 Longboard Centre:
http://www.surffcs.com/shop/surf-longboard/fcs-pc-5-longboard-centre

Make sure you bring it all the way to the tail end of the fin box, otherwise you won't have any drive!

Hey Alex, the second spot is La Torche right?
The bunker on the background looks like the one about 1.5km off the point.

Do you live there?
