Foil SUP / Re: Breaks to learn to SUP foil near Venice?
« on: July 20, 2020, 06:54:50 PM »
It really depends on tides. Sunset is very rocky. There are a lot of beginner surfers there though. If you do not have complete control and the ability to avoid people I would steer clear of sunset. A few foilers do hit it when its working, but I dont think its worth the risk. Theres plenty of of empty waves along will rogers, but not really conducive to what you are looking for. If you have time to drive down to San O would be best. That being said sm around tower 26 gets pretty crowded. But if you go north towards the pier, or south bw venice and bay st there are usually way less people.

Yes. Thanks for the correction samosup. They are enforcing fairly. The sup paddled away and was not heeding the lg orders. It is what it is. But if everyone showed up at the beach it really would spread super fast if someone infected was in the water. Scripps came out and said 6’ rule in the ocean is void due to wind. Sand and bikepaths are closed too.

The water is closed technically 1,000 yards from the beach. Illegal to cross the sand. Maybe an open ocean paddle from a harbor. Or just go to OC or ventura. Surfer got a ticket at el porto on Sat last week. $1,000. told the lifeguards and cops to eff themselves. It sucks. But it is what it is. Just drive. You can paddle.

Technique / Re: Is it cheating to sit down in choppy conditions?
« on: March 26, 2020, 08:59:42 PM »
I sup surf with proner friends quite frequently.  I have been surfing for 18 years and sup surfing for 6, maybe 7. Honestly can not remember. Lol. Sitting in the line up for me is a life saver. But if you must always paddle i would stay away from the pack. Most proners where i surf tolerate sups. I rarely join the pack, except the one beginner spot that almost no one really knows how to surf anyways. But i roam. Ill take a wave hit another peak, paddle over wash rinse repeat just to switch things up. Always follow surf etiquette. Dont be a dick. If you dont know it, learn it. I agree with Area 10, no one wants to see bits and pieces at eye level. I try to do what i cAn to be a good ambassador to our sport. It drives me crazy when i have to apologize to surfers because some dude decides to shoulder hop the same person repeatedly. Most suppers are cool dudes. Most surfers are too. Theres always that one though that ruins it for everyone. Dont be the one. I dont think any of is here are. Have fun. Surf hard. Throw some spray.

I agree with creek (rick). Take the one out for at least 3-4 decent sessions before you pull the trigger on another board. In rough conditions you will fall in. Its going to happen. No way around it. That being said there are two schools of thought for choppy nasty conditions. The first is longer wider bigger. Seems to make sense. More volume equals more board to be able to balance on. Now call me crazy (not my idea i just bought into it 100% after it worked for me, individual results may vary) go shorter and smaller. Creek hit the nail on the head. I am your weight but 4 inches shorter. After practice you could totally surf a smaller board. The goal being to sink the board a bit. The goal for me is to have the board deck literally just above the water so water laps over my feet and ankles. My previous experiences had said thats the wrong answer. BUT it stabilizes the board in chop and and since the board is in the water mostly it does not react as much to the nasty conditions. You need to be on a good board though (shaped by someone who knows what they are doing) since you also have to have the rocker nailed down for that as well. Got to keep the nose a above the water. The creek from the sunova site should work quite well. Just another option.

Check out nikau kai over in manhattan beach while you are here. They have some older infinities in stock that may work for you.

You are more than welcome to borrow one of my boards while you are here if you like. I have a killer 8'10 x31" at about 128L. I also have my 8'3"x29.5" 125Lish phantom you can borrow if you promise not to snap it. lol.

I sold my blur v1 already but it was only 105Lish. My office is right by the airport.

I like the MB pier better than porto personally.

I usually wear my 2mm short sleeve long leg full suit in late feb. But you may be warm enough to trunk it. lol. Water has been chilly at 62ish degrees lately.

South is your better bet. OC even better. Porto/mb not horrible. The northern points have been rather flat lately.

I also have a paddle you can borrow with the board. I have a few fixed and one larger adjustable.

But if you are here on week day you can swing by my office in el segundo. Just rent a van or bring some soft racks.

Just bought my wife a new odyssey. Still got the old one in the driveway. Daughter will be turning 16 soon and its paid off. Lol. The seats dont fold flat like the dodge. But is okay. Ill live. Lol. Minivans are seriously the best cars if you get over the coolness factor.

Hey Mr. Creek,

Check out Hotline out of Santa Cruz. Their main thing is wetsuits but they also make custom leashes. Ive ordered a few from them and they are great. They have a guy on staff who makes them in house. Im sure they can do a custom cuff for you. Give them a buzz!
