SUP General / Where you all came from(history lesson)
« on: March 28, 2011, 08:53:57 AM »
talking story with Doc Paskowitz.

John Zapotocky, the fater of standup paddle surfing, for over 60 years he was the king of what we all call today 'stand up paddle boarding' . in point  of fact for over 40 years 'Zap" was the only such surfer until Pops Achoy and his kids Bobby and Leroy took over in the 80's to use oars to shoot photos of tourists at Waikiki.   Zap was nicknamed Pearl Diver by the other beach boys back in the late 40's for his skill in diving the boards of the day straight to the bottom.   There one sunny day he spotted  the Duke himself paddling in from Canoes on his 16 foot redwood using an old canoe paddle.   that was it! no more preal dives for Zap.    using ash oars for the next 60 years, Zap was the king of the lineup.    Zap is now in his middle 90's living in Hawaii Kai.

and thats the story .......

over on the -ing site the latest blog/column whatever takes all surf company ad managers to task for not stepping up and offering cutting edge ads like this one and also comments rusty for thinking outside to box.  this forum comes off as somewhat crybaby for the broad range of response.    let the fuss go on!

on a more positive note; saw a note today about two guys planning on SUPing the whole right coast to benefit Wounded Warriors.......very kool

down under in OZ during the 60s--early 70s the surf lifesaving clubs tried to do something like this including actually confiscating violators surfboards.   finally became a  lost battle and they had more important things to do like saving lives.  i can't see any organization taking on that kind of duty in today's society, the lawyers would have a field day!

wow, you guys really took one between the eyes on that ad!    more proof that there are a whole lot of idiots in the world and some even get to publish their dumbness in national mags.    as to SUPs taking the heat, i think after 10 pages, it might be time to let it go,(or not).    I'm sure R dot is hosting a whole bunch of internal phone calls, e mails and stuff to figure how we will 'deal' with this.  but also for a company their size, it's just another speed bump in marketing.

"Have you EVER seen someone out on a stand up board not using a leash?" <------Yes, in fact they are sold as an option here in the east and 'some' don't spend the $---had one slide over my back on a wave last summer , no leash, rider lost paddle also, swam in never returned.

i'm glad things are so wonderful on Maui....it's just not that way in the rest of the known world......not being a longboard rider, i don't hang with them, but yes they do clump, natural segregation.

i suppose it's all about the common sense of the individual.  too bad common sense ain't all that common

ok, i'm done here----12 hour shift starts in two hours---happy amateur nite for the ER ---got to love new years eve.......

pono --u didn't read --it's the range on ability in BOTH standing surfers and SUPs that is at issue. plus as many of you admit many of  you don't use leashes, and the sheer mass of the standard SUP vs the lighter surf board.   i'm for segregation in the surf for safety, until the skill level even out ( just as surfer are segregated from bather  or body surfers)  .  as to my background, it was to show that i do have a 'vague' idea.

ok, back again----the SUP section of our ocean race was only five boards, they were added because a local dealer asked for it.  if they attend this year so be it.  did we make $ on them? no, awards cost more than the entry fees.  the event is a memorial not a $ event, it's aimed at the traditional prone paddlers in an open ocean environment with little or no support.

as to my not knowing anything---i've surfed year around for 45 years and been water safety officer for 25 years, retired coastal geologist, presently trauma room nurse as my third or is it fourth career.  it is exactly the vast range of ability in both stand up and SUP on the right coast that has caused problems---one ten foot SUP sliding sideways through the lineup  is like an 18 wheeler on the parkway out of control sweeping up the other ocean users.

some of your 'venters' and 'whiners'   are exactly the problem with their demand for free range rights and 'make me go away' attitude.

o, and there were NO sups out in the surf here on christmas eve or christmas day....just us locals

ok, have at it again...

gee, this was fun...too bad my previous comment was deleted upon posting, here on the right coast SUPs Have caused numerous accidenst due to the generally low clue level.   however, naa, i got nothing else...have a great day

it appears that the USCG has taken a stand based upon the consistent high  risk level shown by the general SUP community as they interact with the other parts of the ocean community i.e.: bathers, surfers, fishermen, prone paddle boarders, and fishermen.    it will be fun ( in a dark sense), to observe the SUP community as they react to the bound to happen serious injury caused by some idiot trying to ride a wave beyond his ability level.  the future of SUP is to be found in lakes, rivers, and parking lots.

Paddle Racing Returns to  Historic 59th Street Pier For International Surf Day

International Surfing Day will kick off the summer of 2010 with the 5th Battle of the Buoys Paddleboard Races (the Marie Allison Memorial Races)on June 20th.

Paddleboard was a popular coastal sport in the 1940’s-50’s-60’s with lifeguards and other watermen taking part in summer races and relays on both the east and west coasts. The continued usage of paddleboards as lifesaving tools and the increasing popularity of Standup paddle-boarding up and down the coast means there will a great  evening of competition for anyone who enjoys the ocean or a good competition.

International Surfing Day hosted by the South Jersey Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will feature Sand Castle building, Surfing lessons, a Beach Cleanup, Music, as well as just plain Fun!

The Paddle races are held each year in memory of a 20 year veteran teacher at Holy Spirit High School  Marie Allisonpassed away from cancer in 1995 Marie was a true beach lover who grew up in Ocean City and spend many hours enjoying the shore.  This event funds an ongoing scholarship at HSHS and is sponsored by Marie’s family.

The Standup paddle and Traditional prone paddleboard races feature a 5 mile course which will take racers around the historic 59th street pier and down the Ocean City shore line to 34th street and return. Also, there will be short around the pier races for surfboard riders in several age groups.

Participation in the races is limited and early registration is encouraged.   The first race begins at 6:45 PM June 20th, 2010.   For more information:  call chuck allison at 368-1577  or email   ScienceLB@aol.com
