SUP General / Re: Home Insurance for SUP gear

I just added a rider this week for 2 SIC boards and 2 QB paddles for about $30/year total.  Covers 100% replacement cost for loss, theft, or damage with a $0 deductible through a well known provider.

I’d recommend getting in touch with an agent/broker and going through an insurance review every few years.

SUP General / First time race director...wish me luck

In an era of declining races and numbers of participants, i had the bright idea of creating a new event...what am I thinking?

I don't even really like to race, but my 13 year old daughter loves it and I do love spending time with her.  Even though I don't enjoy the actual race part, i do love going to events and hanging with my friends...my paddling family.  The goals are simple...have something that the elite racers will enjoy, but cater to the masses. My wife would also add...don't lose money!  The idea came from a blog post I wrote a long time ago on what my ideal race would be...I decided to just do it.  so wish me luck!

If you happen to be in the Great Lakes area at the end of June...check it out! It truly is a great place to paddle.

I road tripped from Michigan to Florida with my daughter last year.  Locking straps and well lit parking lot of decent hotels worked out pretty well.  I also added 2 SIC boards and 2 carbon paddles to my homeowners policy for $80/6 months....$0 deductible and full replacement cost.  Made me feel better that if anything happened to them, I could just purchase new ones.

quite a few people in Michigan.  I paddle with a crew in West Michigan (Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon areas).  Also groups around Traverse City and Detroit area.  Lots of great spots to DW!

I've commented on this a couple of times over the last year or so when SUPracer posts about this on Facebook.  Every time, my comment gets deleted...guess he doesn't like these questions.   :-X

Oh Well

3 girls...11, 13, and 15.  They all have raced, but currently only my 11 year old does.  she started around 8 and got an award two years in a row for being the youngest competitor.  Even though they don't all race, the entire family still attends the event to hang out at the beach and paddle around crystal lake between events.

great event...I've done it the past 5 years and it's on my "can't miss" list.  offers something for everyone...3 mile rec, 6 mile elite, 1.5 mile kids race all on beautiful Crystal Lake in the morning.  Then lunch and the afternoon 5 mile downwinder on Lake Michigan.  Then dinner and amazing give-aways.  great weekend for our family and friends.  Cost is reasonable, the swag bags and shirts rock, and everything is free for the kids.  My kids love the bags...under armour sinch sacks, UA hats, sunglasses, towels, lots of others and it literally is $0 for the kids...amazing.

A big group of us camp at Betsy River Campsite near the venue for the weekend...look us up!

Random / Re: Cheap but watery places to live

How about Michigan?  Yes, there is a few months of Winter that you can ski/snowshoe through, but other than that, it's amazing.  Plenty of cheap places to live in one of the many beach-side communities along the coast of Lake Michigan.  West MI has some of the most beautiful beaches and sand dunes in the world.  On any given week you can paddle down a scenic river, explore a secluded inland lake, surf 4-6' waves, do an awesome downwinder with the boys (and girls).  All of this can literally be done within a 10 minute drive if you live near one of these coastal towns.

Highly recommend!  Good luck!

I have 1"x30" galvanized pipe screwed into a floor flange that is mounted to the studs...stacked three high and I can still walk under without hitting my head.  Pool noodle or pipe insulation for padding on the pipes.  Been working great for years!  less than $10 at Lowes

Starting at $10. I used something similar to this for a few years from a different company...might need to pick up one of these.

if it's flat water, I'd dress for the air temp...generally speaking.  went out yesterday...sunny and 60, water in the low 40s.  Trunks, booties (could have done without), short sleeve shirt and supreme paddle jacket.  I took off the jacket pretty quickly.

Nice review. Do you know where the production boards are being manufactured?
