I always use my bag when transporting to and from my boat. Just remember not to leave it in the bag in the sun especially during summer. You'll cook your board.

Wade, (wanderzr) you're out at Mavericks! with a paddle! You can stand on your head out there and still get all my respect and more! Nice website too, ...Rick.

I'm a big proponent of whatever works is good. I prefer to be on my feet going through whitewater or facing some feathering monster because you have a few more options and a little more power, but whatever. I have perfected the knee-to-feet air change. This is where you paddle over a peaked wave on your knees, free fall a little, and land on your feet. "Perfected" in this case means I've done it twice.

I've also perfected the "kick your board over and fall backwards down the face" move, which I have a tough time recommending. The last time I did this I really thought I might wind up doing an up close inspection of my own butt.

Oh man did I ever do the "Knee to feet" change a few times by mistake myself! I agree when you're on you're feet it gives you better options when facing sizable oncoming surf. I also have (knee) paddled in shorebreak where every second counts before getting nailed. I've just felt, at my home break, knee paddling shows a possible lack of skill which can be dangerous in a crowded, agro lineup, although I will sit with the prone guys while waiting for sets.

why is knee paddling out  a big no no?

It's not.
You may hear from some that it isn't a part of real stand up paddling. Isn't this the same narrow mindedness that we try to overcome to be accepted out in the line up?
Stand up, lay down or kneel all you want.
Just surf.

I always try to keep an open mind but knee paddling on a stand up paddle board especially in a crowded surf zone just makes no sense. It does nothing for yourself if your trying to gain respect in a place where (ability) dictates respect among your peers. Plus it's not effective in big surf.

Gear Talk / Re: Do you carry a knife when non-surf SUPing?

Is that a Ruger, surfpainter?  I've never carried a blade while SUPing/sirfing, but would look into a good dive knife if I was feeling the need to go that way.

That's my Px4 Storm Beretta, 9mm.

Obviously I'd have no use for a knife while surfing waves but there were 2 times while flatwater paddling I would have given anything to have one of my knives with me. The first time I though I was clear of a pier fisherman's line and it took me 20 minutes to untangle it from my leash thankfully before the hook showed up. The second time I was paddling (exploring) some tidal flats and found a small shorebird with it's leg caught in a mussel shell with the tide rising. I freed the bird but again it took too long and I almost cut myself hitting the mussel shell with a sharp oyster shell. Since then I always carry a small fixed blade. Like PonoBill, I have a small collection nearby too..

Started surfing about 45 years ago (yup I'm an old dude) I have no injuries or ailments and I still go on the biggest days possible. I started stand up paddling when it all basically started and have had no desire to prone surf since. I get the question directed at me constantly, "Do you ever just surf anymore"? I tell them I'm surfing more now than ever before and enjoying it more. There is simply nothing I can't do on my 9'6'' custom Footemaui waveboard that I couldn't do on any of my old longboards. Laying down in the water does not appeal to me at all especially in winter.

Don't surf with a coiled leash. Really. The package they come in says not to, and they are right. Long story. Search the site for "coiled leashes"

Well, here's a long thread about it. I tested this a fair amount. I use coiled leashes all the time for downwinders and racing, but NOT for surfing. I like both my eyes.

Actually Bill this leash is for my maliko14 downwinder, like you said I wouldn't use a coiled leash for surfing at all either. Thanks for the link.

Pardon me if this has been asked before but what can I do to return my coiled leash to it's original coiled position? It got out of whack before I ever took it into the water.

Easy to spot

the wale has reflection in the water... bottom right of the image. The kayaker does not, and should as he's bright yellow...

Corran

I was about to say this same thing.

Three 5 mile perimeter lakes within a mile of my house...Puget Sound is 15 minutes away...I don't SUP in the surf...That's for surfing...

SUP in the surf, that's mostly all I care to do..It's surfing anyway you cut it isn't it?

Technique / Re: Caught in the big stuff - how to deal
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:40:56 PM »
I'm a fan of challenging yourself paddling through whitewater beginning with small stuff. Getting your technique wired  practicing and going for bigger whitewater when the time comes. I also agree the more time spent in the water, the natural progression to ones limitations become evident. Certainly when it gets really big and paddling over a thick pitching lip the bail becomes the only option for me. When it's that big I tend to be paddling out by myself anyway. There is nothing more exilarating than paddling at full speed into a wave, shifting to a surf stance at the last second, digging one last stroke into the oncoming whitewater, kicking the nose into the wave and vaulting over the boiling water and coming back down into my regular paddling stance all in mere seconds. It's a move you'll want more of I guarantee!
