Heading to San Sebastian, Spain in late June-early July. Would love to surf SUP but looks like prone surfing is MUCH more popular. Crowds in the summer at main beach looks pretty crazy too. I saw some some delivery options for SUP/surfboards online and reached out to them ( http://surfrentalsansebastian.com). They seem like a decent option. Anyone have any other resources? Worst-case I just plan to ask around for SUPs at the rentals/schools at Zurriola beach and figure it out when I get there. -R

Thanks. So anything from naked to a full 2mm. "Personal Insulation" will now going forward be a part of my vocabulary. Just paid Ripcurl a visit and a 1.5mm LS top and board shorts (maybe throw in some wetsuit shorts) is what I'm going with. -R

Cold(er) water Noob question here: What do people recommend wearing to SUP surf where the water is around ~65 degs and the air is 65-70? I have a fair amount of experience (in tropical conditions ) so I don't expect to be floundering in the water and realistically expect to stay out of the water and on the board for almost all of the session. Not terribly excited about piling on the neoprene, but rather be safe that sorry. What's the gear to have? -Rob

Does anyone have any recommendations for deck/traction pads for an 8'6" SUP?
I was planning on putting the Dakine SUP traction pad, but I have learned that they are no longer making them (for some reason). I would a clean look and a kick pad on the back. Any suggestions?

kwhilden, I couldn't agree more. I was there at the BoP, SUP'd some waves Doheny, and witnessed firsthand the amazing SUP skills at the break. I hope that all of these rules excluding SUP from certain CA breaks are eliminated and seen as narrow-minded and unnecessary.

How much do you weigh? My wife used that board for 8-10 mile distance runs all the time (she is like 130) and loved it. I have used it a little for training and it works fine (I'm at 175). It felt pretty stable and was/is a fun ride in bumps for me.

SUP Ninja, Join a canoe club (NRG suggestion #6). That is excellent cross-training and a lot of fun. The only risk is that it uses similar muscles (but the stroke is slightly different) and the downsides of over-training may start rearing their ugly heads.

As a follow-up, I surfed one of the newly rail tape-free boards the other day and the difference is incredible! The smoothness of the ride and the speed increase was notable especially when dropping in or turning (ie: when the rail is fully in the water). Maybe it was mental, but it sure felt better! -R

Sea Urchins in Hawaii are different than those in the Caribbean and unfortunately I have experience with both. The vana spines in Hawaii just break into smaller pieces if you go at 'em with a tweezers. As stated above the only really to do is clean it and let the body take care of it. I'm a big fan of old-school iodine or betadine for this (and reef cuts in general). For the Caribbean ones, it is worth it to try and get the spines out as they are less likely to break up.

Done! I used Goo Gone on the leftover rail tape adhesive (on a C4 sandwich construction board) and it was MUCH easier than bug/tar remover. Thanks for the tip. I cleaned off the goo gone with water/soap when I was done and as far as I could tell it didn't damage the board's finish.
FYI, I did heat the tape on one of the boards with a hairdryer before removing it because I was afraid that it would take the clear coat off. It didn't. The C4 one had the tape 1/3 peeled off anyways so I just pulled at it without problem. Maybe I just got lucky.
I don't know what type of rail tape was applied as they both had the rail tapes on when I bought them.

Ok, so I successfully removed the rail tape on 2 boards. The tape had begun to peel off in places and that wasn't so good for surfability. The question is how best to remove the underlying super-sticky adhesive.
For one board, I did it with elbow grease, a partner, and an automotive bug/tar remover and it was a pain in the a#$ and took an hour an a half. There has to be a better way. I was thinking acetone/nail polish remover but I thought it would probably not be best for the underlying epoxy/clear coat. Any suggestions?

Nice! Is there any way you can re-upload the photo or attach a link so that I (we) can read the text.
The top looks like the regular 14' glide but the bottom is totally kayakified. Is this for flat-water applications, downwind or both? -R

Good stuff. I agree that that there should be a different length for surf and distance/race although I currently use the exact same paddle for both (about 9" overhead). Weight/board thickness/salt or fresh water and squatting vs. standing tall all factor in, but I wonder how (if at all) arm length, flexibility, strength and paddling-style factor into the equation. In the end, the best equation can only give you a starting point and the only way to really dial it in is to experiment and see what gets the job done best.
Who wants to write the white paper on blade size (length/width), angle, scoop or no scoop, and dihedral or hype?
Carrera - I too would like to use your paper on my site (currently under development). Do you mind if I clean it up a bit and add some diagrams/pictures?

Well, sounds like racing in Oahu is going to be getting a little pricier. Here are the new requirements for using Hawaii Kai, Ala Wai, or Keehi: http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/chair/pio/nr/2010/NR10-043.pdfThe biggie is the $1500 minimum charge to close/monitor a boat channel during a race. Note that this is for all races including canoes, paddleboards, and SUP. -R
