Foil SUP / Re: total geek out post on the GL210

the problem I had is that the individual pieces are about 1mm wide, and so it only transcribes points at about a mm interval.  Near the leading edge that isn't enough resolution to get the shape.  Maybe it would be possible to use it several times at different angles, but then when tracing each shape onto paper it is very tough to figure out how to merge the individual profiles back together into a cohesive picture of the cross-section.  cutting/taping cardstock is pretty foolproof and easy

another tip is to wrap a wire around the profile section, then just slide it off. Quick & easy. use something malleable like soldering wire.

Foil SUP / Re: guys wanna see what the GoFoil NL220 is capable of?
« on: September 29, 2020, 10:23:06 AM »
the mast is a bit too tall for small waves...the wing ends up being below the power of the swell in anything below waist high...and the turning radius is wider compared to a shorter mast...i would've preferred the 29.5tuttle with the base plate adapter or the simply the 32.5 plate mast...

I get the tuttle masts, and like to have both tuttle and track mounts on my boards. Then you have options to add/remote the adapter for a 3" mast length change for conditions. And it still comes out cheaper and easier to travel (when that was a thing) than buying a plate-only mast.
So with a 29.5" and 36.5" mast, I get 29.5", 32.5", 36.5" and 39.5" options.

does anyone know if the Echo 7m requires the little extension line for the draft control line when using the longer boom?
I understand that's the only boom that works for the 7m, so likely wouldn't be required. but can't find a way to confirm that.
thanks
You do not need the extension pigtail line fitness draft control rope with the 6 or 7m the line is already setup perfectly for the long boom as that is the Only boom it works with.  The extension is provided  a with the 4 or 5m only and you only use it when  rigging with the Long boom, don't not use it when rigging with short boom.  (Comment from Dan G. copied from another source)
Great thanks. That's what I figured.

still it seems a bit tight on mine (which I've used for a total of only 1hr). There is a kink in the fabric alone the center batten, and the leech on one side flutters a lot when riding upwind. figured it could be a cause, but maybe just because it's new and needs to bag out & settle a bit.

rad stuff. thanks.

How does the NL220 compare to both the GL210 and GL240? I have one on order.

I'm a big guy... very big. 6'6".
mostly on the 240, which I like best with the 6.5" pedestal (no shim washer) and 17.5" flip tip flat tail; with either 29.5" or 36.5" mast depending prone surf or wingfoil). I used to ride with one shim washer and the longer pedestal, but it's way more responsive now and pretty much just as stable at speed.
I've had other friends try my setup and they don't go anywhere near as fast as me on it (but they're fast on their own foils) or as turny. It's pretty interesting how being a bit heavier lets you get so much more out of the big wings. Id still rather just be smaller though.

However, last week another friend forgot to put the Tuttle to adapter mounting bolts, so when his GL140/18N, and standard 24" mast separated from the adapter, it all floated. The leading edge of the 140 was just visible above the waterline, but floating nonetheless.
that's hilarious.

re: OP's board. yup, screws too long, buuuuut.... it's a liquid force. they've always made crap kite products. They often fail. They are now out of business (kite department at least).

Gear Talk / PSH 10'2" hull paddler VS. 10'6" XW ripper
« on: October 15, 2011, 01:50:49 PM »
I'm a big dude. 6'5" 260ish. fairly fit. only SUP-surf occasionally, but like performance when I'm on a wave. There is often a little bit of wind chop where we surf.
Otherwise I do (regular) surf.

thoughts on these two boards?
- which surfs better?
- which is better for bigger waves? ...small waves?
- more stable?
- bang for the buck?

any other suggestions? not stuck on PSH, but they are appealing. I want to keep in 10'6" to 10' range. I have other boards bigger than that, but would rather they stay in the garage for surf days.

Thanks guys!

Gear Talk / Ristafins - Conner BOP race fin.
« on: October 02, 2011, 11:12:15 AM »
check out this video of Conner.

He is using the Ristafins SUP race fin to take 1st. not too shabby.
There was an online store up at ristafins.com but now it looks like it's down. It says website is under construction.

there are a bunch of other cool videos on their Vimeo channel.

Does anyone know which board Danny used?  Hollow carbon or the foam and carbon?
What were others on?

thanks, John

I don't know which boards they were on, but I do know that Conner had a Ristafin on his board. www.ristafins.com
Looks like the website is still under construction.

But I know the Ristafins from kiteboard racing, where most of the top guys in the world have them on their boards. Obviously they work well on SUPs too. I have been using them on my kiteboard for a couple years now too, but it's always been difficult to get them. looks like that is changing.

thanks for all the info guys.
DW - now that you've had yours for a while, I'm assuming you've had plenty chances to try it out.
Any feedback/thoughts?
are you happy with your positioning? How does it 'feel'?
thanks

FYI> I traded up from the 9'5" mana to the 10'. I'm a big dude and it was less of a pain in the ass to get on waves, but didn't really noticeably lose performance for me.
