Heading to a family wedding first week of April and staying on Tel Aviv beach.

Any advice on where to rent a board for the week?

Or anyone want to barter/lend me a board? Just let me know what you want me to bring you from California.  And, no i can't bring better surf!

Gear Talk / Re: Blair SC8.10 & SC8.11
« on: January 09, 2013, 10:37:42 AM »
I got an SC 8.10 (31.5" wide) in March, 2012.  I'm a big fan of both Joe Blair and the board.

I'm 6'3, 195lbs and 57 yrs old. I don't have the greatest balance but find this board very stable.  I had a Paddle Surf Hawaii 9'6" wide ripper that was too twitchy for me, especially on front back movement (from the PSH's pulled in nose and tail).  But, I have no trouble with the Blair on side or front/back chop.

I surf a beach break in the South Bay and the Blair is fast enough to catch quick close outs and turns well enough to pull out of a wave.  Some people feel its too wide to really rip on, but I not a good enough surfer to find any handling deficiencies.

I never tried the narrower board.  And, durability has been as good as my PSH boards.

Yes I'm selling the 9'6".

It's been surfed about 20 times.  Perfectly clean except for a glue smudge from my knee brace.  White with black and white camo.

The board's in South Bay.  I'll meet you within 60 miles.  Price for a new one is $1.275.  What'll you give me.

Gear Talk / Switching from a PSH 9'6" Wide Ripper to a ? Advice Please
« on: April 02, 2012, 09:23:09 AM »
I've been surfing a PSH 9'6" Wide Ripper on and off for about a year.  I surf a steep beach break in So Cal.

After knee surgery I've finally got to admit that this board is a bit much for me.  I can stand on it fine in flat water or in glassy days, but I fall off the damn thing too often in the lineup on normal mixed swell days.   I'm 57, 6'2" and 195 lbs.

My go-to board is a 10'6" PSH Wide All Around that is so stable I could sleep on it.  But, it's too long.

I'm thinking about a 9'6" PSH wide all around, 9' Blair or 9'6" Nectar.

I would truly appreciate advice for strong surfing, but stable boards,9'6" or under.

Thanks

Going to be in NJ for a wedding Memorial Day Weekend.

Any advice on where there's a good break say in between Atlantic City and Surf City?  And, where to rent a SUP?

And, how cold is the water?

thanks

XM brand Calf Leash.  Da Kine puts the teeth of the velco on the main strap.  And, it wears off the skin behind your knee.

Saturday morning at Manhattan Beach CA, on a messy mixed swell morning, someone had one of these out.  He was doing fine.

Our favorite shapers and surf shops need more sales.  Guy will graduate to a real board.  And, when he bails and the board is coming at you, at least its foam.   :)

Gear Talk / Re: Aipa boards -- Feedback??

I rode a friends 11' hand shaped board a dozen times and loved it.  This generation had hard rails and a flat deck.  Fast paddling, very stable.  And, quick late entry board for riding California beach breaks.

You didn't ask but I'm riding a 10'6" Paddle Surf Hawaii all around and quite happy.  Thinking about adding a 9'6"  PSH ripper to the quiver.

Howzit MB Sup.  How does the 11' Aipa compare to the 10'6" PSH that you have in terms of stability and glide?  Thanks.

Stability is about the same.  Old generation AIPA may have had a bit more glide and paddling east.  The AIPA 11' was a bit "point and shoot" but would turn in the bottom.  The PSH 10'6"  will turn on the peak like a short board.

The 101 board has a pulled in nose and a sting end.  The rails were so funky it's hard to describe.  Most SUPS have a gradual half round top to a bottom rail that's about 80 degrees.

This one has almost level taper to a 1" wide round rail and pulled in at the same angle on the bottom.  When that narrow edge got under the water it wouldn't come out from counterweighting.  Had to paddle hard to get the rail out of the water.  Pain when in the line up.

Also, the deck was domed.  That made stability hard.  These new gen boards are on the kingsurf website.

Be very very careful about what generation of the hand shaped boards.

I rode a friends 11' hand shaped board a dozen times and loved it.  This generation had hard rails and a flat deck.  Fast paddling, very stable.  And, quick late entry board for riding California beach breaks.

Got a 10' new generation in Dec '09 with strange thin rolled rails with an edge below.  And, domed deck.  That thing was impossible to ride or even stand on.  Least little swell or chop in the line up and you're down.  Had a number of guys try it and it didn't work.

Old generation great.  New generation very questionable.

Great insight on the nose rocker.  Thanks.

Gear Talk / PSH 10'6" WAA v C4 Pohaku 10'6"
« on: December 15, 2009, 05:24:27 PM »
Trying to decide between a Paddle Surf Hawaii 10'6" wide all around or a C4 Pohaku 10'6" (or maybe even 10'0").  I'm big (6'2" 195 lbs) and surf a beach break.  Need a stable board.  But also want a board that surfs steep waves well and paddles fast.  The Pohaku sounds a bit thin at 4 1/8".

Any opinions?  Thanks a lot for your advice.
