Gear Talk / Re: Stinky booties (high top), drying hack
« on: October 05, 2021, 03:14:57 PM »
I rinse mine with fresh water, pat them dry with a towel, then lay them on their side in front of a fan. After 10 or 12 hours they'll be completely dry.

To remove the stink, I add some water, drop a bar of soap into them, rub it around a bit, and rinse well. After they dry, If they still smell, I hit them with Fabreeze. That cures it completely.

.

I second this technique. I blast them with a strong fan (Lasko High Velocity X-Blower Utility Fan) right into the opening of the boot until they are bone dry. this is the only way. Then if they stink up I use some stuff that I bought at the surf shop to destiny them. Never tried fabreeze or listerine. but I will when my stuff runs out.

wow so jealous Rick. I went out on either side of Larry's huge day in Long Island and it was fun as hell! Had to work on Friday, but it was so big, I'm not sure I would have gone out. Although it would have been hard to resist.

hopefully your solo shot will work better in Mexico. Dying to go south for some swell this year. Never done it.

This video from Montauk on Friday is the most beautiful video I've seen. Plus a couple paddlers made it into it. Not actually on the waves, but not looking out either.

damn sounds like fun!  Good to see your still gettin' out on your SUP. If you are around this weekend, I might be sojourning to NJ depending on the wind situation.

General Discussion / Re: Is anyone just SUP Surfing anymore?
« on: June 16, 2021, 11:25:09 AM »
I came late to the party.  Just before the foil revolution on the site (maybe 3.5 years ago). Standupzone saved me countless hours of trial and error, and helped me to progress/choose a board/surf safely and even made a few aquaintances.  AND surfcowboy, for sure this site is an incredible how-to resource with so much advice. I am still committed to sup surfing and still check this site regularly.

But it is true, the maturity of the sport is evident. Not as many people making new contributions to the sport -- perhaps. because things are more locked down. Even in the videos of the pros you see this. Mo Freitas used to have the most excellent surf videos, as did Kai Lenny and so many other surfers. The Paddlewoo podcasts ended. At this point it leans more to being older guy sport; and supthecreek is leading the way there, and we need some more adventures in sup surfing to keep the progression going!

Seabreeze seems a bit more active at this point, and I go to SupBoarder Pro for their reviews of new equipment and technique vids. But beyond that, there is not much activity on the internet in what seems to be quite a healthy, if not niche, sport.

also, my apt. in Brooklyn, NY keeps me down to one board, and certainly wouldn't work with a Foil. Also, I'm kinda broke and can't afford all the craziness that wind-foiling entails.

General Discussion / Re: Surf Rig - How do you hide your keys?
« on: May 27, 2021, 12:39:29 PM »
Have been using a waterproof pouch under my wetsuit, but it makes me nervous, especially when I switch to shorts and a rash guard.  Thinking about a fake rock to put under my bag in the sand at the edge of the dunes.

Just looking over your website, I'm tired just looking at all the projects that you have done. Impressive!

General Discussion / Re: Moving to Santa Cruz.. Jealous!
« on: February 07, 2021, 02:26:23 PM »
all I can say is California Problems....

I'm in NYC, and watch the Steamer Lane Surfline cam far to often with complete jealousy for the number of surf able days.

ALTHOUGH the conditions are very similar tomorrow to Steamer Lane, except that its 5 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT WITH WIND CHILL!!!!

But I shouldn't complain. At least I live fairly near waves...

And yes, we have alot of surfers, but the winter they thin out. And everybody is pretty nice, and there are about 5 sup surfers for 10 miles of beach break...

way to test that shoulder!  I didn't go out in NY as it looked a bit gnarly, and it was!  kudos for you to brave the cold for some really nice waves!

Random / Re: The super techies saved my crashed drive:)

Great to have that kind of result!  I didn't even think about a physical fixable issue on a hard drive. I always figured a drive fails, it will destroy a bunch of files in the very least.

I keep all my files on a local RAID 5 and a backup that drive and my main drive every night to externals. Have had too many issues with HD in the past not to. Thinking about cloud storage, but it gets difficult with video.

love that style! I have been thinking about a paddle mount for my old hero. Which one do you use?  I bought a cheapo handlebar mount for it that seems pretty good. But I'm thinking paddling will put alot of stress on it.

Gave up on combo boxes early on, as even in sunlight, I have trouble reading it. I have an open only key that I used to keep on a lanyard around my neck. But of course one time it came off in the white water, even though I had on a rash guard. Since then, my leashlok waist leash has a really nice velcro pocket that keeps my key safe. The only problem is that I end up wearing the kook-belt even when the waves are small because of it. But I'm already on a SUP so who's counting.

Wow, dreamy. Would love to catch waves with that long break.  My first date with Teddy was a bit harsher in the Rockaways. side shore and high tide. Hoping things clean up a bit Tuesday!
