General Discussion / Filling a gouge in SUP-help needed
« on: March 02, 2021, 03:39:11 PM »
Newbie doing a repair since I don't live near any surf shops. So i have a few quick questions....

1. How do I know if my SUP is poly or epoxy? The foam looks like smallish size foam balls stuck together?

2. The foam dented in and cracked in a few spots under my heel so I had to dig out some of the foam (about fist size)...What is the strongest (all my weight is resting here) and easiest fill material to add before glassing? Q-cell, microballoons or glueing in a new foam peice? I'm not as concerned about adding weight as this board is likely moving on after repair.

3. Lastly, what is ratio of Q-cell or microballoons to resin if going that method?

Thanks in Advance!!!

Hey from NC-
I've got a Bote 14' Darkroom V.1 that has about a 12" crack right where my heel rests. Worse its has a significant pressure ding that needs to be filled with a good bit of material (about 1 cup or more) where my heel sunk the foam down in during a 30 mile race.

Wondering what the best material to fill that huge pressure ding would be (read posts about bondo??).....It doesn't have Clark foam but what looks like the cheapo old school Styrofoam block used on floating docks. Just not sure what folks use to fill a very large space where all my weight will be resting??? Also wanting to conserve the weight of the race board.

Next steps....cut out the cracked and surrounding epoxy surface, fill with???, then add fiberglass cloth and resin (repeat)???

Thanks in advance!!!

Struggling to find the right SUP for waves on East Coast which are rarely waist high and usually mushy I'm 180lbs. I grew up shortboarding and pretty aggressive surfer with experience. I bought a 10'6 surftech pig about 32' not sure volume but its a hoss and riding for 2 years but need something more fun. You really have to work hard to get it moving and loose in fun waves.

I'm looking at a used Kings Simons 8'6 31" 140L but wondering if that will be too much volume to move around the face????  Or do I need more volume since waves will likely be weaker here on E. Coast.  Wave count -vs- Performance???Would appreciate any feedback.  Thanks in adavance
