Foil SUP / Naish foil mast waterlogging fixes?
« on: August 14, 2018, 08:58:25 PM »
I'm riding Naish Thrust foils and have a repeated problem where the hollow mast fills up with water during my session and gets extremely heavy.  It makes a very noticeable difference, you can really feel it when you pump or carve hard.  After the session the water stays trapped in the mast and drains out very slowly, covering everything with salt over a few days even after I rinse it.  Yes, I could disassemble and rinse everything after every session but... does anyone actually do that? Plus, that doesn't help the mid-session waterlogging.  This happens with both my 70 and my 90cm masts, and I've heard the same thing from other people so it's not just a single faulty part.

I have been thinking about blowing the hollow mast full of waterproof foam to keep most of the water out in the first place.  Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/GREAT-Insulating-Sealant-Great-Stuff/dp/B01LZGCNTH/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1534305124&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=Dow+Great+Stuff+Pond+%26+Stone+Insulating+Foam+Sealant

The downside of trying this being that it will be a pain to dig out if it doesn't work or absorbs water and gets permanently heavy.  Alternatively, I could do my best to cut out a chunk of hard foam and insert it, which would help but it's a long weird shape so I probably won't be able to fill it completely.

Any other ideas?  Other people have this problem?

I've been using my Naish more lately so I'm finding another home for the Kai.  $1,050 in Encinitas.

I used one quite a bit. I don’t think it has much negative impact. It’s heavy and bulky, but probably not enough to matter too much in reality. If anyone wants one pm me. I’m using Tuttle exclusively at the moment so no need anymore.

Foil SUP / Re: Tuttle Box vs. Dual Track Cassette for Foil Mount
« on: January 09, 2018, 09:12:40 PM »
I had about 30 days on a stick on plate mounted to an FCD shortboard. It looked questionable but was surprisingly solid for me. I was using a gofoil and didn’t love the tuttle-plate adapter. I have about the same number of days on a tuttle box setup that was built into my heavily glassed XTR construction board. I have taken some hard falls and it is totally solid. The hardest falls for me are those where I cavitate flying too high at speed (usually in chop) then “trip” and land nose down with my weight on the board. I have to imagine that is a lot of load on the box. I’m 175lbs, so not huge but not small either.

The Tuttle and dual track setups are probably both solid as long as they’re installed right. FWIW, I think the decision should have more to do with matching the attachment method of your foil setup. Agree with the benefit of fore/aft adjustment with the tracks.

Thanks, that's good to know. Maybe I'll ride without any first and see what works best.

Foil SUP / Foot strap placement
« on: December 16, 2017, 12:54:50 PM »
I’m modifying an 8’2” L41 SimSup with a Tuttle box to foil it. Does anyone know where rear foot straps should go in relationship to the Tuttle box?

When I’m foiling my prone surfboard, I like my foot right on the front bolt in waist-shoulder high surf. Not sure how that would change with a sup.

I hacked a few pad pieces together for that setup. I set the main pad at a normal shortboard placement so it works when I surf the board without the foil. The rear pad is octopus corduroy and I put some extra da Kine diamond pattern pad in front. If it’s small I like to be right on the front bolt, and if it’s bigger I like being fully in front of the mast. With the different pad textures I can tell where my foot placement is without looking down.

One other thing about that board is the tail was a little too thin to have the full Tuttle box. Javier made a little dome for the box about 1/4” high. The benefit is that it acts like an arch pad so I know if my rear foot is centered over the mast.

Here’s a shot from above.

Foil SUP / 5’10” Tomo Evo Foil Surfboard
« on: December 09, 2017, 10:21:33 PM »
Took delivery a few weeks ago on this 5’10” 43 liter tomo evo. Javier at XTR in Oceanside scaled up the thickness, dropped the channels, and built it with a Tuttle box for my Kai foil.

After a few months paddling a much lower volume board, I wanted something with as much paddle power as could be jammed into a short package. The evo seemed like the appropriate shape to start with.

I have about a dozen days on it so far and it’s great. I can paddle into almost anything with it, but it’s so light and stubby that I can’t imagine I would gain too much by going smaller.

The other benefit of this shape is that I can always pull the foil and have a groveler to surf.

Next up is adding a Tuttle box to my 8’2” L41...

Your rack isn't full. You need more boards.

It's either a long wait (multi week) or expensive postage from overseas for the Manta. I'm a little surprised there isn't a domestic alternative but I didn't run across one. GoFoil said they're working on one but it's not available yet. They referred me to Manta in the meantime.

One of the local surf skiers mounted a Clearwater to his ski and said he was experimenting with it. Based on our conversation it didn't sound like it was going too well so far.  Seems hard to imagine trimming would work well without the ability to quickly shift your whole body weight around.

I know this thread is a little stale, but seemed like the appropriate place to post some feedback on the foil mount. I went this route because I wanted to mount a foil to a 6' FCD Fark shortboard that is too thin for a tuttle box. I'm using a GoFoil Kai with a Manta adapter to the track mount.  I have a handful of days on it and it seems solid.  I'm guessing it's stronger than my board is.  My board is pretty flat but with very slight tail rocker.  You can see in the photo that the foil mount is peeled up a bit toward the tail (1/2" back?).  Not sure if this is due to difficulty getting the glue to set initially in that spot or perhaps leaving the foil bolted on, which would tend to pull the mount back to flat (and the tail section away from the board).  Either way, I have been riding it like that and it doesn't feel loose at all.

The adapter is from Manta.  It's about as clean as I could imagine, but still seems sadly bulky to add to such an efficient foil.  I guess it doesn't matter when I'm in the air but I definitely think about it when I'm paddling to catch a wave.  Also, not sure I love that the foil is a few inches deeper than it would otherwise have been.  https://www.mantafoils.com/e-shop/Manta-deep-tuttle-to-plate-adapter-p85832834

I know the GoFoils float, but when it's attached to the metal adapter and the foil mount... not so sure.  I tied up a little leash that goes around to my leash string for the time being just to give myself some peace of mind until I'm a little more confident in the setup.

Overall, easy to install, so far so good.  For about the same price I kind of wish I went the route of installing twin boxes.  I'd have a little more confidence and at least I could still go surf this board without the foil that way.

Foil SUP / Re: Foil position on board
« on: September 29, 2017, 10:09:55 PM »
Recommendations from Alex at GoFoil for distance from trailing edge of board to the trailing edge of Tuttle box for the following boards:

6'0" FCD Fark (19 3/4, 2 3/8) shortboard: 10"-12"

7'8" starboard hypernut: 21"-22"

I'm using the stick on pad for the Fark since it's too thin for a Tuttle box, will let you know how it goes.
