175 lbs, so not too big. Usually surf smaller waves.

Gear Talk / Quad fin size
« on: August 31, 2019, 03:05:09 PM »
I'm going to try switching from a 2+1 fin setup to quad, and I'm wondering which size fins would be best for a SUP in the 9'4" - 9'7" range. I'm interested in the Futures Legacy Quad set, which is either F6 (4.56" high sides & 4.05" high rears), or F8 (4.64" high sides & 4.15" high rears). Not much difference?

Schweitzer Paddle Sports should have a 7'7"!

Check with Bart DeZwart at Kanaha Kai. He does carry smaller Starboards.

Hi-Tech also has a 7'10" Airborne (the orange one) to demo. I saw it with my own eyes!

You have many options, my friend. :)

The Schweitzers at Maui Sports Adventures had a great selection of high performance boards (most of the Starboard line), and they're great people.

I put the 2+1 PowerFlex (7" & 4") on my wife's board. I like them, and don't think you need the super soft ones. Neither of us are super experienced surfers, and those fins are fine for us.

My neighbor took this couple of days ago.

It's been an amazing month paddling off of Capitola. Dozens of dolphins, and at least a hundred sea lions. They love following us around when we're paddling. Even when the waves have been flat recently, we've had a great time out there with all the sea life.

I don't have those, but I do have a couple pairs of Quiksilver board shorts in their 4 Way Stretch Diamond Dobby material. I like it a lot. Very comfortable, gives where I want it to, dries fast. However, those pairs don't last nearly as long as the thicker, more conventional board shorts.

I've got high arches, and the Psycho split toe boot have great arch support. I got used to the spit pretty quickly.

I'm 5'8" & 165. I went from a 10'3" x 30.5" to a Kings 9'4" x 30". The former is better for flat water, but I do fine on the Kings (just a bit more exercise). In the surf, the smaller board is great. I recently went out on a 9' x 33", and for surfing I didn't miss the extra length at all.

One thing I love about my Kings are the stepped rails. Keeps good volume in the middle, but it's easier to dig the rails in for turns.

Hey Greg,
I lived and surfed in the Bay Area, but it was in the mid-late 80's. I know Covewater sports in Santa Cruz has some nice Demo SUP boards for you to rent. The waves are SUP friendly in Santa Cruz but not all the surfers are? North of there at Four-Mile has good SUS waves, Pacifica, Montara just No. of Half Moon Bay, Ocean Beach, but can be a hard paddle out, Fort Point is a fun left on the right swell too!
Good luck,
Fanman

I'm a fan of Covewater. You can check out their rental board selection on their website and call a day or two in advance to have once reserved for you. SUP surfers can be found between the Hook & the Capitola pier.

Boardsports @ Coyote Point (just south of SFO on the bay side) has windsurfing stuff.

Wanted to give a shout out to Maui Sports Adventures and the Schweitzer family. My Mrs and I were on Maui for a few days and went out SUS a couple days with Zane's brother Matt. Great teacher who got Sheryl (lots of flat water paddling experience) super comfortable in the waves. She really came into her own under his guidance, and got tons of waves all on her own after Matt gave her the skill and confidence. He was a big help to me as a goofy on lefts (being from NorCal, I never surf them!). The whole family is great, and they had tons of killer Starboards to play with. At home I went from 10'3" to 9'4", but did well on a 9" Starboard. Big turtles watched us surf, which was an added bonus.

Warren, my disappointment was that I was told by Dave that you had a 9'9", then I got a 9'11". Dave apologized and said he'd send the correct size. After not hearing anything more, I asked for a status update and that's when Deb said that I wouldn't be getting the correct size bag, that this was the best you currently had, but that I could return at my own expense.

If I was told that size wasn't available and offered a choice to order or not, I would have been understanding. I've got a 10'3" bag I've been using, so I didn't absolutely need another but wanted a better fit. Your bags are the best I've ever used or seen, but I wish I was given the chance to decide if I still wanted a bag that was different from what I ordered, and I shouldn't have been told it would be replaced and then not have that followed through on.

They were going to charge you for the return?

I ordered a board bag from a shop that I've bought over $4 grand worth of stuff before. I told them my board was 9'4" (x 30") and they said their 9'9" would be their closest fit. Unfortunately, they shipped me their 9'11".

I let them know right away in an e-mail, and they responded that they'd get the correct bag out right away. After I didn't hear anything for a while, I was finally told that they didn't have a 9'9" in stock so what they sent me was the best they could do. I asked to have a call tag so I could return it, but was told that I'd have to pay for return shipping. I'm not pleased.

Just sea terns and a lot of snowy egrets around the SF bay this weekend, but a nice paddle anyway. The terns love to dive and plunge for fish just feet from our boards.
