Foil SUP / Re: Board Stability/Selection Advice?
« on: August 29, 2021, 05:13:33 PM »
I had the 7'10 Takuma convertible. Now I have 5'10 Slingshot Outwit 100L. Unless it's perfectly glass smooth and flat I can't even stand on the 5'10 long enough to catch a wave with a paddle. It's great for winging and ultra light kiting with a GL240. Perhaps if I put more time on the Outwit with a paddle I would get better but going that short is definitely a major learning curve. At least for me.

Did you ever try to paddle the 7'10"?

With the slingshot, do you think the length, or the volume is the bigger factor? I'm seeing surf sup foil boards at 130 liters for a 6' board. I definitely know length matters, but I wonder how tippy it is with all that volume added?

Yes, I’ve paddled the 7’10 with the foil. It’s MUCH easier to balance on than the 5’10 Slingshot Outwit. I never wingfoiled with the 7’10 though. I’m guessing it’s the length AND width. I think the longer width adds the extra stability. My buddy picked up a 7’6 Outwit and maybe one day I’ll try it and know more. Though I’m also paddling in wind chop and not real, clean waves. So there’s that.

Anything but really deep gouges can be visually eliminated with light sanding and spraying with matte clear rattle-can spray.

All better. No filler, no body putty, no epoxy, no rubbing compound. All three wings were equally trashed, I did them all in well less than an hour. anyone who knows me realizes I'd never spend more time than that making something pretty.

A second coat of gloss on top of the matte would make them all shiny and new-looking. I didn't bother.

I keep chipping the GoFoil paint on the tips of the front/tail wings. I used to try and cover it with epoxy but have gotten lazy and just rattle them now. I’ve tried a couple of types or rattle paint; epoxy, metal and something else I think. It seems strong but then starts to chip away. Thoughts on why it’s not sticking? I’ve tried to lightly sand the areas so the paint sticks but it doesn’t seem to make much difference unless I do epoxy.

Fascinating stuff.

I remember hearing or seeing people try attaching wake board fins on various parts of the wing.

Has anyone tried putting wing tips like the NL on their high aspect wing?

I think Alex Auguera has. You can see them on his GL in this video

Hey Jon,

At $20 it seems like one of these contour gauges may make quick work of section acquisition.  If you wanted to get fancy you could also use it to grid the wing which would show wash, etc.

Heh, I have a couple of those tools. I tried to use them to copy the contour of my GoFoil 18W tail so I can design some 3d printed shims. In short, it didn't work that well.

I avoided to box repairs and installations for years.  The scariest repair to do on a surfboard (worse I think that a full 2 part break and repair).

HOWEVER using Gorilla Glue combined with a spritz of water has changed all that making box installations a snap.

I watched that video a while ago but I was wondering why you didn’t use expanding urethane foam? (Will watch later again) I’m guessing that’s what the Gorilla Glue is? If it is, what density?

Yes - Gorilla Glue with Water Spritz is expanding Eurethane foam.   4 lbs per Cubic Foot.  This is in the Video Thumbnail

Duh! Thanks! ;D I’ll watch it again once I’m back at a computer tomorrow.

So, 4lb expands pretty far. 8LB I’ve used and it’s hard but 16lb should be even harder and a lot less expansion. ? So that’s why I had the lazy idea of drilling around the boxes and filling with the harder foam. Biggest reason (other than lazy) is I wouldn’t have to align the boxes. Routing around them and filling could also work. Mostly just busy to start the project. Just learned I now need to repair a roof leak. *SIGH*

I’ve used (still have some) the 8LB density and it’s TOUGH, seems close to PVC foam tough. This stuff sticks to everything, higher density expands less. I was thinking of trying some 16lb density. The place where I got the 8lb says the 16lb would need a hammer to dent: http://uscomposites.com/foam.html Would need to devise something to hold the boxes straight in place.

@PonoBill
This is a crossover board. If I use the stick-on pad, I can’t use it as a surfboard. Tried the sucking trick right after the session I noticed it on. Think it’s just paint but track’s definitely coming up. I could just cover the tracks and use it as a surfboard. Have plenty of other boards but feel this one’s worth saving. If anything it’s just experience working on boards but I still haven’t fixed some of the other boards I broke. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions! I really don't think it's just a paint crack.

I have a RideEngine foil track box that I never used for anything. The reason it was never used? Because I've followed most of the install/fail threads here for years and you guys just dont make it look easy! ;D Well, some make it looks easy but I know it's not. Routing the boxes out and putting in new ones _seems_ like a solution with the least amount of cutting. I guess if that fails I could then try and put the RideEngine box in.

One of my surfboards has developed a tiny crack at the end of one of the foil tracks. It looks like the plastic box is ready to start pulling out. I caught it early and it's just the paint that's cracked.

I'm wondering what's the best way to go about fixing it. Could I just cut around the plastic fin box, remove it, glue it back in and add some glass layers over the top? Was also thinking just drilling some holes close to that area and injecting 8LB density urathane foam, then a glass layer over the whole thing?

thnx

Foil SUP / Re: Quick release dual track and pedestal

Interesting. I’m currently using the Noir Matter quick flight system when bringing the foil on a jet ski. The quick release option is nice but I would still feel more comfortable with a screw. What about using the tail mount slides like this new system and have two standard T nuts in the front? Or maybe even just one.

I foil behind a mastercraft x24, on a lf galaxy board with a slingshot i 84 wing, riding 2nd and 3rd wave back.

The Slingshot Infinity 84 is a 2066cm² wing and that's pretty big. You're already familiar with that setup so why not bring it? Seems like you would have one less thing to learn once you're flying. Unless you just want a new toy and I completely understand that.  ;)

That sounds like a lot of work.

When I say, you could machine, I mean you could bring it to a machine shop :).  Super quick and easy project for them.

;D  I guess I should have mentioned that I have a HarborFreight Mini Mill LOL that I've pretty much only used it as a drill press but have tried my hand at "machining" stuff and lets just say it was FAR from mediocre. I think a 3D printer would probably work better for this.

Basically I'm just being cheap on blowing another $300 on a tail wing that I don't need. I'm just interested in what my original wings would feel like with a faster tail. Spending $ at a machine shop to mount some wings that don't fit or might not even work wont help me with my cheapness.
