What an injury Surfside!!!! I don't want to use straps wing foiling... A fall backwards with the board on foil and foot caught on strap,  it seems dangerous, more with booties on and/or tight straps... People seems to like them, but I'll follow strapless for now.

Sup foiling seems another thing, really. Having the wing to hang from it and fall smoothly is a great thing!!

Hello!! Just wanted to chime in to tell my experience so far.
I started this post because I was concerned about injury risk in wing foiling, having very delicate shoulders with a long history of dislocations and fractures.
Now I'm several months into it and I can say the risk can be very low.
I haven't got any hard fall, nor any close call with the foil.
I started with a 130 l converted sup board and a 45cm mast, very smooth start.
I have followed closely the rule of not forcing trying to save the situation. When feeling unbalanced, bail far of the foil.
Now I'm in a 90 cm mast, near 30 sessions, and I fly heelside to both sides, jibes are coming along and Toeside riding too.
A slow path, due to my very cautious approach and feeble winds of my homespot.
But still I'm progressing and enjoying every minute of it.

Only wanted to encourage anyone who's in doubt about starting... It can be done with very low risk!!

Thanks to the zoners to posted in the day, you helped a lot in getting in!

Thank you very much for your time and responses. I've already bought a 5m wing, local brand, killer price. Initially I'll be using it with my Mistral windsurfer with daggerboard...just get the feel of it and we'll see
. I'll keep you posted.!!!!

I'd be wearing wetsuit, booties, impact vest and helmet for sure!!!
And I plan to practice first with the  foil towed by a friend's boat, and separately wing with my mistral windsurf board.
Then, a friend have offered to lend me a 8.4 sup board with a foil mount to start with... Maybe is too big even for first times?

All my questions refer to winG foiling, thanks Dwight for helping clarifying . I guess I should have read my own post well before publishing...  ;)
Already read the high speed related post... My aim is only to cruise at moderate speed... I obtain my adrenaline rush pretty cheap!

Hello!!
Lately I've been attracted by windfoiling. I have a strong sup race and surfski background, some longboard windsurfing , and love downwinding above any other discipline.
I have a shoulder injury and been strongly recommended not to get involved in sports with sudden,  or violent falls. (I quitted snowboarding for that matter). I fall often surfing with the race board, but know how to place arm to avoid dislocation... If I have time to anticipate the fall.
Seeing the videos online, even for beginners it seems to be mellow and easy enough... Slowly flying over water. Even the falls when overfoiling don't seem that bad seen on video... Only a plunge on the water.
But when I've read the forum, I've seen recommendations for complete helmets, impact vests, and seen the word dangerous or rad a few times.
Is that risk more related to surf foiling Beach breaks?
I'd only want to sail back and forth, and when experienced, doing some up and downwinding with winds lower that 20 kt.
So what do you say? If attempted carefully (jump early when things go wrong, using a stable and slow foil like gong allvator, and taking a slow pace, could it be done?
Thanks a lot!!!!!!

Joanne Hamilton - vale 's record is incredible. The one before by Norman and this last one by de Zwart have been made on 18 feet boards, and she made it on a stock 14. Little buzz though, I have heard more about the other two...

Team riders are using them, I think. At least sometimes. I saw Olivia Piana  on one  at the Carolina Cup...

SUP General / Re: Caught first waves on raceboard ... nervous fun!

I surf my Javelin LE 12.6 a lot. In fact, I keep it mainly for that purpose, and, I've got rid of my surf sup, because I like mushy and soft waves and a race board is the perfect match for them. And some race boards like my jav, with low volume noses,  are able to turn like a big longboard, and provide loong and fast  rides. I usually catch from knee to waist high, but sometimes been in big ones, when I'm pretty sure I can escape before they break.

Hi!!! Which paddle length does he use for flatwater and downwinders, and if he changes it when he skips from allstar to the lower deck of the Ace

Gear Talk / Re: Ace 23.5 too much?
« on: February 26, 2017, 12:03:42 PM »
Hey! A lot of miles already on my Ace 23.5 since last July. Finally, after all my doubts, I have had no stability issues at all with this board, even on fairly rough stuff. It rolls and bobs a lot, but once used to, is no problem, as you move along with the board and don't try to fight it.  It handles side chop nicely, too (apparently a lot less nose volume than the 14x25). I find it more reactive and nervous than the 25, and it pearls more in downwind stuff. Overall a superb do it all board (excluding Beach races) and the most important thing to me: is the most fun board I've ever tried or owned. I 've read before that an Ace is a racing board with results and quickness  in mind, but to me is in addition a lot of fun (not in flat water, of course).

Thanks Area10!
