Let this be a lesson - if the CL ad doesn't have pictures, inquire anyhow. You just might get lucky!

I think I'll keep this paddle for now (it's a good go-between for me and the wife) and maybe once I dial in the correct length I'll get a hold of a 2nd fixed length CF paddle.

Stoked! Ride report once I get a chance to get her out (probably just flat water to start).

Well this little saga had a happy ending - answered a CL ad for a Naish Quest being sold up in NH for $400. Ad didn’t have pics, so probably passed over by quite a few (thankfully). Anyhoo - turns out it is a completely unused 2017 10-8 quest with a Werner Tonga paddle & fannypack PFD. A pretty sweet package for less than the sunburned surftec!

I’m back baby!

Thanks for all the replies / info. I'm definitely going to pass on this one (listed for $600!!) - I don't mind a used board, but not looking to have to learn a bunch of new repair skills before she hits the water (I'm good with poly - not so experienced with EPS / Epoxy).

In the interest of full disclosure, this is really a board for both of us. I've "downgraded" to an inflatable SUP to keep at my work for paddling around a nearby pond on my lunch as weather / time allows, but we traded in the primary SUP (Focus) for 2 kayaks about 2 years ago - the thinking being we could kayak together with 2 kayaks, but only one of us could go out at a time with 1 SUP. Well, we've gone kayaking together a sum total of 1 time in the 2 years, so it's time to re-think that equation. On flat / calm days, I feel I'm more inclined to put a sup on the roof and go paddle the local waterways than dealing with the kayak.

SUP General / peeling on surftec board?

Hi all - has anyone ever seen something like this peeling on a board? It's a used Surftec board I inquired about for my wife.  Haven't been able to go see it (it's 1+ hours away), but thought it was a curious "condition". What would cause this strange layer to peel like that?

Had a great couple of sessions at 1st Beach Thursday and yesterday mornings.  Fun session with PDLSRF yesterday am!  And great to meet Kayadogg and CNSKI!!!  And scored an awesome Wiki paddle on an early bird Matunuck SUP swap meet sale
Looks like ti was fun in the am. I got to 2nd beach right as the wind shifted and came up. Tried out the 11-4 for a bit and got in a few short rides before it completely blew out - still find it tough to control that much board. Tried to get a few prone-style on the singlefin, but that was mostly an exercise in futility. All good exercise though!

Jason, I would hold off on that SupATX board as you could probably score a much better board even cheaper this Sunday if your wiling to drive a little further into southern RI. Matunuck Surf Shop is having it's Spring SUP Sell/Swap meet. Below is the shops ad on craigslist. I myself will be bringing a full carbon BIC Pro Custom 9'2 which I'll sell or trade for around $450 as well as a full Carbon KeNalu Wiki paddle for $150. I will also have another board from KayaDogg a brand new Gulliver V-Box 2 8'6 for $600.

Great - thanks for the info. May be tough to get away on Sunday, but I'll see if I can.

Salinity:  Yep, we had it all to ourselves that's for sure....watched ya score some nice rides yourself!  You definitely seemed to score a few!!!!!  Was gonna say "Mornin" a few times but seemed to grab a few front sides (being a goofy) and headed off towards Cliff Walk away from ya.  Next time!

Best,
Sweet! Name's Jason for next time. I'm at 1st or 2nd (when you don't have to be a movie star to surf there) most mornings when there's a bump.

I actually came here to see there was info on SupATX boards (entry level). I found one in CT that looks more reasonable to gen in some surf than the 11'4" x 33" boat I currently try to run from time to time. The ATX is Poly too, which I haven't seen much in the SUP world.

PS. How do you get your gloves back on so easy when they're wet?

Nice morning....got in the water at 6:30am and out at 9:00....Not sure what was up the first hour with me - just didn't have my usual balance.  Settled in after a short slurp of coffee and a muffin at the truck.  Enjoyed the dozens of clean knee to occasional thighers.  Only Zoner out.  Light offshore started some minor bumpiness about 8:30.  One proner down towards carousel and that was it.

I think I may have been out there with you this AM - proner blue & white singlefin - got out when you were going back in for session #3. SUP was definitely the right choice of vessel out there today. Unfortunately, mine isn't too fun to drive with on top of the Cherokee at highway speeds (my hour + commute to the cape for work)!

Ice finally disappeared (and quickly) from the beach closest to me (Narragansett Bay - no Sup-surfing there) - boy was I happy to see that this weekend. No more needing to try to time the tidal rivers to get out for a paddle. Bonus: I saw a curious seal on my first bay paddle yesterday.

...And check back with us later with that "forseeable future" thing. It's entirely possible that of the ten thousand or so people that have said that, you are the  one that will do so.
Yeah - I'm curious myself. I can see SUP-surfing extending my surfing season a bit - on purpose immersion in cold ocean water (prone) is getting less and less appealing (vs. incidental immersion - which I could probably tolerate).

Thanks for all the info - good to hear it's likely normal growing pains. And thanks for the vid Offshore - I'l'l check that out. I do have a foam roller and some lacrosse balls for working out the kinks.

I do imagine the tension a few spoke up contribute to the foot cramps - with the water hovering just above freezing, I was taking great pains not to fall in. I'll be glad when it's tolerable enough to get a bit more daring on to practice pivot turns and more aggressive footwork. I was more concious about bending from teh hips and not corving my back the 2nd time out and that seems to have helped quite a bit.

I may have obtained a bit more board than I need at 11'4", but I imagine that's better than not enough for just starting out. My paddle is an adjustable composite Jimmy Styks paddle I picked up cheap from WM - I haven't seen much info / reviews about that particular paddle, but in my limited experience it seems to be a decent beater paddle (a bit heavy perhaps, but I don't know any better yet). I haven't had any issues with the adjust mechanism yet and I change it a lot as I'm trying to find the right length.

Hi all - new to the forum and to SUPing. As part of my recent 40th, my wife collected $$ towards a "mid-life crisis" aquatic vessel - which turned out to be my first SUP (a used 11'4" focus smoothie).

I'm a long-time proner (nothing special - just a single-fin or fish cruiser type), and for the forseeable future most of my surfing will likely still take place on prone boards. But seeing I recently relocated to RI (up Narraganset Bay a ways), I figure there is no shortage of flat water paddling / exploring in my future. I've been reading the forum for a while, but didn't join until I actually got out there.

The ice finally cleared out of the local access points and allowed me to get a couple of sessions in this past week. All went well and I'm sure I have a lot to learn regarding technique, etc. I did have a couple of notable unexpected sore areas, that I was curious about. First was the arch of my feet - I'm in somewhat constricting 7mm booties, which may have contributed - but they started hurting almost right away. I tried moving around on the board a bit more my 2nd time out, but still experienced it. Second was my lower back on my right side. It was borderline debilitating for a few days after the first session. Normal "growing pains" or something that a common beginner mistake may be contributing to.

I must say the 2nd session, although more nautically challenging (paddling against a pretty stiff current and dodging mini-icebergs coming downstream), I was more comfortable & the back pain wasn't so bad. Although I seem to have "delayed onset exhaustion" that creeps up on me about 1-2 hours after the session. I haven't felt that tired right out of the water, but man, a little while afterwards and I'm gassed! Hooked though - already planning how I can get out for a short session before work during the week.

Hi all - new to the forum & SUPing (finally got out a couple times over the past week!). Relative to online sources, I also found this site pretty informative:

http://ri.usharbors.com/explore/

They have good info on the waterways (primarily for mariners, but useful for SUPing), harbor info, as well as zoom-able nav chart overlays on top of google maps. Pretty cool. Although the 1 knot tidal current they claimed in the Warren River was NOT what I experienced as the tide was going out yesterday - made for a hell of a workout!
