General Discussion / Re: 10' to 7'9" SUP?
« on: April 07, 2023, 06:25:34 PM »
If you can manage to only surf in clean low chop/low backwash conditions, then the jump is possible on just about any board with enough enthusiam and time on water, but my read is it will be a stretch for you. For your size, I would go with something 8'6"ish 110Lish, 29-30 inch wide. I find anything more than 30 inches wide is slow rail to rail and sluggish.

Foil SUP / Foil for first SUP foil session
« on: September 04, 2022, 04:09:19 PM »
Been wingnutting (wing foiling) as my wife calls it for my first summer season now and decent  at flying on both tacks now, still cant jibe,  anyway that is another story...... I have the 2022 Naish Hover Crossover 7'4" 120L and had some good SUP surfing sessions on it. 185 lbs here. Question, I have the F-One 1800 Gravity and F-One Phantom 1280 on there medium fuse. Which should I use for my maiden SUP foil? Will be in crumbly/ rolly beach break at medium to high tides, 2-4 ft waves.

I have been learning to Wingfoil on the F-One Phantom 1280,  "short" fuselage ( 37cm) from F-One. Total length tip of front foil to tail back is 76cm. I am comfortable wingfoili flying in control and up/down wind.  I have the Naish 2022 Hover Crossover (7'4" x 30", 120 liters) with windfoil option but have never windfoiled before. Will my Phantom 1280 be a decent learing vehicle for windfoil on the Naish Hover Crossover?  I am 85kg.

Gear Talk / Surfinz fin into FCSII box
« on: May 28, 2022, 03:51:12 PM »
I got a new Naish SUP and it has FCS II boxes for side fins. I have some Surfinz fins for my Starboard SUP and they dont quite fit in the FCS II box. Seems the FCS II box has a slight taper in the box side and Surfinz fins dont have a taper and dont quite make in by about 5mm. The FCS II box is suppose to receive the FCS standard fin optionally. Anybody modified a Surfinz fin to fit in FCS or FCS II box?

SUP General / Re: Kailoa paddle cut down

Hey all, I completed it with success :). The dremel tool with large rock sander tip was a must to remove the previous shaft+epoxy from the handle and get the handle hole the right shape for the new larger diameter shaft.  Do not try without dremel tool.

Good feedback thanks. What kinda odds for success would you give a first time try at this? I am decent with a hack saw, epoxy, sanding, dremel tool etc and generally a fix it guy.

SUP General / Kailoa paddle cut down
« on: February 12, 2022, 11:22:50 AM »
I am transitioning this Kailoa paddle for SUP surfing, taking about 4 inches off. I have no idea what kind of glue was used to attach the handle. Any good how to videos or recommendations out there for remove, cut and re-attach this handle?

Thanks all for the advice for my buddy. My overall read is somewhere around 200L volume, >32 in wide and in 11 foot range is a good board for him. He is a every other weekend warrior type and so my Pacific Wave is likely a trial in frustration and wouldnt want to turn him off to it all.

General Discussion / SUP surfboard for a 250 lb person

My 250 lb, 6'5" buddie wants to learn to SUP surf and I was thinking of giving him my Mistral Pacifico Wave, but is is it large and wide enough to float a beginner and get him progressing in Santa Barbara wave conditions? It is 170L , nose 19.25”, tail 16.75”, width 30”, 11’1” long.

Foil SUP / Re: Wing Drifter Pro?

Saaawweeet! Foil tilt to compensate for paddle pull/rotate!!! Thank you.  BTW, I like to paddle on both sides in both stances, gotta keep the six pack symmetrical :-)  The skateboard paddle helped develop my goofy.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Back surgery advice
« on: November 26, 2021, 10:15:49 AM »
Twenty years  ago I blew out L4-L5 and L5-S1 and the MRI showed bulging into the spinal cord with general degenerating disk desease in both disks. Shooting sciatica nerve pain and constant refered pain into my calf and outer right toes. Had to lay flat on my back for two weeks just to be able to barely walk and get to the physical therapist. Saw both an ortho and neuro surgeon and they both wanted to do surgery after I had stabilized with PT. Someone thankfully suggested I see a physiatrist (think of this specialty as a navigator thru the other my-way or the highway physicians). He said that sure you can get surgery, but in 10 years the lines of betterness would cross and you will be worse than if had you just followed a rigorous rehab path. This physiatrist manages serious injuries for the SF Giant football team BTW. So the journey with the physiatrist began: 6 more months of PT till I had plateaued on improvement, then started accupuncture to quench the refered leg pain and that got me to a new level of movement and a new plateau.  After 1 year, I could windsurf flat water and swim again at least with much care, Mt biking no way, running no way. My goal was to get back to normal wavesailing, skiing, surfing, Mt biking and sex. The physiatrist said that inflamation was holding me back at this point and I still had general low back pain and stiffness. Next he suggested massage threatment 2/week and that felt great but basically turned into a 1 day reprieve from pain, similar to what the accupuncture basically did, but the strategy was to manage the inflamation to get to the next plateau. After 2 years he said I was ready for Pilates with a trained PT, note trained PT and pilates person. That started off very slow due to my poor mobilty in lower spine, but wow did I learn how to strengthen my core, stretch key hamstrings for back pain relief, learned how to stand, posture, learned how to sneeze with back issues, side sleeping skiils and overall body health. It did not hurt that all the folks in the Pilates studio were recovering dancers either :-)  Joe Montana used this studio for injury recovery. After 1 year of Pilates 2/week I started wavesailing again but could not really jump due to compression at landing. The Pilates instructor basically said I had a weak core, likely due to the lack of gravity sports in youth thru age 18 (I was swimmer/water polo junkie). So, now we get down to business on core, I buy my own Pilates reformer and I am doing Pilates dailiy at home and  1/week in studio (another 2 years in studio) and guess what I have been doing home pilates  for the last 15 years. I ski, wavesail jump, Mt bike, good sex, run, SUP surf, swim hard... Basically the only think I cant do now is prone surf pop up to standing. My L4-L5 and L5-S1 are bascially auto-fused as the physiatrist calls it. I still have pain when I sit > 1 hrs, so I am a mover pain manager.  Yes, I am lucky to have the financial capability and time to do all that, but hey, I worked 40 sit/stand/walk hrs/week thru it all, got married and had a kid. My heart goes out to all with low back pain out there, it can be overcome and you can live with/thru/past it.

Foil SUP / Re: Wing Drifter Pro?
« on: November 26, 2021, 09:01:39 AM »
Did my maiden SUP foil ride on the 5'8" 115L Wing Drifter. Compared to my 8'5" Starboard SUP it felt like I was standing on a near round platform. Relatively stable but I had to switch paddle sides every two strokes because it just want to pivot in a circle with each stroke. I put the foil square in the middle of the track. Is there a way to paddle or foil placement so you can get a straighter paddle line? If not, then this board is too short for foil SUP it seems to this novice foiler.

Damn that is a good price for a SPF50 water shirt, $17. Just ordered one with so little to lose from the "loose fit" link above. Thanks!
