Foil SUP / Re: Delusions of Competence
« on: December 21, 2018, 04:25:47 PM »
I need to push the reset button on staying away from people. I'm having some kind of delusion of competence because I can get up, control the foil, and turn. That's not enough.

Why not just bail off the back of the board as soon as you see something that might go bad. I find with foiling often the best thing to do is to try not to hold on through rough situations and instead just bail out.

Thanks for the info on the Glide. I'm thinking about getting the L and adding the S wing. L for tiny bumps and dock pumping (and heavy weight friends) and S for faster waves and kitesurfing (I'm 165 lbs).

I love that foam ball you caught at 0:15 and then easily made it back to the critical section.

I've tried foiling the LF Rocket Foil behind the boat but I found that because you can't really pump it you can't control your speed and end up running too far forwards then sink.

What are your thoughts on the NP Glide L and M foils? Very interested in reviews in them.

I know I have to worry about stingrays up at Belmont and to do the shuffle, are there any other beaches I have to worry about them? I would guess the beaches with surf would be free of rays.

Thanks for all the input.

Seal Beach looks worth checking out as I might bring my one of my bigger kites with me in case there is enough wind to kitesurf. Everything I've heard though says the kitesurfing is garbage in Feb though.

I'll primarily be out in the mornings too, Monday-Friday so odds of wind are pretty close to zero.

SoCal / SUP around Newport Beach

I'm going to be in the Newport area mid Feb and I'm going to bring my SUP (and my skim) and I seek some advice.

After reading up a bit my plan is to SUP at Bolsa Chica mostly as I'm used to Canadian and Oregon waters where you often have 2-3 other people to share waves with. I'm average skill at best and prefer longboard style mellow waves to getting barreled.

Any other spots to consider?

Anyone have any tips on where to skim? I'm more of a flatland skimmer so a wave novice but I do have a decent wave board.

Temperature wise what should I expect? I have a 6/5 hooded and a 5/4, after that it's just 2 mm pants + 1.5 mm top. I like to be warm though so I'm thinking 5/4 should be okay.

SUP General / Separated Shoulder
« on: June 13, 2015, 04:23:33 PM »
Recently suffered a 2nd degree separated shoulder skim boarding. It's been a week and I have 2 more weeks until a surf trip (3 weeks total recovery time).

Anyone who has experienced a separated shoulder know what kind of shape I could expect to be in to be able to paddle after 3 weeks of rehab?

Gear Talk / Re: Futures Single Center Fin For Flatwater
« on: April 09, 2015, 03:10:12 PM »
Looking around the best looking fin I could find would be getting a set of Solus and just using the center for flats. This would be good as I'm usually surfing small waves and need the speed these will give when using all 3.

https://futuresfins.com/en-us/solus-solus-1400-430-00-detail

Any thoughts or other options? Too bad Uli didn't have a longboard finbox for the center.

ps. You can't see it on that page but the Solus center is a hatchet.

Those both appear to be for longboard fin boxes, my center rear uses a thruster grub screw though.

I just picked up a Uli GL 10-0 Special Edition primarily for surfing but I was wondering if there are any decent options for better tracking fins for it for flat water. Obviously there are massive options for longboard fins but I need to find a Futrues.

Gear Talk / Re: Red Paddle Co Surf Star 9'2 in small surf?

Yeah I had already watched that DW vid on the 10'0 and it looked like a lot of fun.

Have the materials changed year on year for the Red Paddle Co boards? I notice that the 10'0 x 30 surfer is listed at 27 lbs while the newer 9'8 x 31 is only 25 lbs. If they were the same material the 9'8 x 31 should weigh more as it's a larger area.

Is the old full blue Surf Star 9'2 any different from the 2014 or 2015 Surf Star?

Yes the Ride 9'8 looks like a very nice shape for small waves but I was curious if the 9'2 might be better than it looks for them while being more versatile for bigger surf.

How does the old 9'6 Allwater compare to 9'2 SS and 9'8 ride?

Anyone have any feedback on the Red Paddle Co Surf Star 9'2 in small surf?

I'm looking for an iSUP for longboard style small wave riding, something that can catch small mushy waves early and nose ride.

Does anyone have any experience or reviews of the JP Surf SurfAir 9'? I can't seem to find anything on it.
