Been a while since posting here. Windsurfed '84-2000 ( three years of that in Maui ) Began kiting in 2000 ( quickly sold all windsurf gear ) Kite foiling last 6 years pretty much exclusively unless it's well above 20 , then sometimes strapped surfboard for wave riding and boosting. Three years now using a SUP foil board to ride surf ( no Kite ) This August I Got a 6m F One Swing ( and quickly ordered a 5m & 4.2m ) and started the learning process. I live near Santa Barbara/ Ventura. In the past two months I've used each of the wings multiple times. All skills from aforementioned activities have a component to winging. The biggest thing I've learned so far is that you have to have enough wind for your weight and gear used. I weigh 155 , use a 95L 5'8'' board with a Lift 200 Surf Foil ( same as I ride on waves with no wind ) In my opinion it's always better to err on being overpowered when choosing what wing to ride. With regard to wind on the wing, It is far better to Spill it than Fill it. If the wind gets lighter after going out, be patient and wait for a gust before trying to pump up on foil. I wore myself out completely a few times before figuring ( and being told ) this out. Most importantly, keep at it and make sure your gear suits your weight. Proficiency will come with time on the water. For the record, I'm completely stoked on winging as are many of my friends in my area.

I have a few Lift foils and the one thing about Lift if you have any dramas just contact Nick Leason direct and he will replace anything that faults. No questions asked. The guy prides his product and in my opinion one of the best built foils on the market. nickleason85@hotmail.com

Spoke to a very knowledgeable guy here on Maui, that has been foiling for about a year, and his advice for "waves of consequence" was to straighten out in the flats and then kick the foil right as you go left, or vice versa. The added benefit is that on a foil you can often get around the section, but you don't know till you straighten out and look at how far it is throwing and how top to bottom the wave is.
Yeah I'm not so sure. If that works for you, good deal. My experience is if you kick the board out from under you, it wants to fly up. That can be a problem. I've found the safest ejection strategy is to gently fall off the back of the board. I've gotten hurt jumping off front of board or adjacent to rails. Gently off the back is my game plan for now. Looking forward to winter - summer has pretty much been waveless around here. Cheers

I would not be too concerned with the exact angle of the mast. It looks like the angle of attack (AOA) of the Go Foil is 0 degrees in neutral but it is slightly angled up (I would say about 2 degrees) in neutral- that is measured from the center of the profile in the front to the tip at the back it is not at zero degrees. That means even if the mast is exactly 90 degrees to the planing surface of the board, the AOA on the main foil is 2 degrees. This slight AOA helps create lift when catching the wave even at pre-takeoff speeds, which is why it's easier to catch the wave on a smaller board with a foil once you get the hang of it.
Regarding mast placement from the tail, I would follow the Go Foil suggestions. You don't what the foil too far forward as you don't want it to start lifting off before you are positioned and ready for it. Sometimes I stay forward during a steep takeoff and don't move back over the foil to lift up until I'm on the less steep part of the wave and ready for it. Also, the tail tends to catch and creates drag while foiling if there is a lot of board behind the mast. I just cut 10" off my 7'6 foil board as an experiment, so the back of the mast went from being 20" from the tail to 10" from the tail and the board is now 6'8 long. I have only ridden it once so far since cutting off the tail but like it much better so far. I'll post some pic of it soon.
Agree with Robert. I think you're over thinking mast angle. Box placement is more important. Follow Aguerra guidelines. Myself, I rode my board regular surfing for weeks and marked where my rear foot was when turning and cutting back. Board is 7' , rear of box about 19" " from tail. I'm 160 lbs. You want a familiar pivot point so you don't have to move your back foot when coming down off foil. Also, I would not even think about having straps on board until you are accomplished 30-40 sessions. You will hurt yourself. Good luck and be safe!

Funny, I was trying to explain to a buddy the SUP foil concept. I told him it was like doing a wheelie on a skateboard and maintaining it for long distances and changes of direction.

Honestly, I'd just give it to Stretch. He knows what he's doing. I see Peter Trow often. His stuff is holding up fine.....
