Whitewater and River SUP / Ocean Waves on the Hala Atcha
« on: November 29, 2017, 10:30:10 PM »
Decided to take out my new Hatcha out in the surf. Was pleasantly   surprised at its capability.

I was just stoked it would work in a pinch or possibly for travel.

Anyone else try this?

I've been using these as a baselayer for the last season or so & been happy with them:
http://www.crash-pads.com/product/pro-short-with-tail-shield-2500/

For outer pads I've been very happy with my Animas knee/shin guards. They do a great job of absorbing impacts and stay in place well:

Are you wearing a wetsuit and if so are the crash pad shorts under or over the wetsuit?  Thanks for your help.

I have Dainese hip protectors (for mtn biking and early season skiing). They are mesh. Perfect for the prupose you ask for. You can wear over your wetsuit. (buy a size bigger

I think you'd want the mesh ones.

Thanks. I’ll check them out

I did a search on old threads but would like a more updated opinion/suggestions on body armor.

Lower body protection? I know a lot of people wear leg protection but hips and coccyx seem important to protect.  Not sure what to do when wearing a wetsuit.  Something like this under?
https://www.sixsixone.com/exo-short-black

Or more burly hip protection like...
https://m.dickssportinggoods.com/p/nike-pro-mens-hyperstrong-core-football-shorts-16nikahyprstrngshftc/16nikahyprstrngshftc?camp=CSE:DSG_pg46569_ecom_PLA_452&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm9vPBRCQARIsABAIQYcgpUv9J020f08an74VmELSiSBdy-ZnU8U3BqkwDqtvuoGe6qHcaVIaAjw7EALw_wcB

Only worried that may be really tight under a wetsuit.

And for upper body...

Overkill????

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks.

Thanks for all the advice. Pulled the trigger on Hala Atcha 8’6”. Hopefully a good decision.

I have an ocean background and I've been paddle surfing  for probably 10 years.  We have a local Hala dealer and I have been demoing their boards.  The Hala Gram is a blast in the wave but I'm looking for some  something I can start doing some maybe class two and three rapids with also.  That board is a bit too small.   I was pretty excited about the Hala Atcha and they have a 9'6" but it feels too big. Was thinking of buying the 8'6" blind and then saw the bic.  I cannot seem to find hardly any reviews on that board or videos of it in action.  To me,  The rocker looks a little flat.

I'm 190 lbs by the way.

Thanks for any thoughts.

SUP General / Re: Ticket for no PFD on Oregon Lake
« on: August 04, 2014, 02:36:41 PM »
So, I am having a hard time with understanding how Oregon Law and Federal Law overlap:

I don't want to go to court to have her say that it is Oregon Law that matters and not the Federal Law.

It seems Oregon law is more vague, specifically on exemptions to PDF requirements.  For example, I don't see any exemption for windsurfers, yet I'm quite sure windsurfers are exempt in Oregon.  I do see the exemption in the Federal law.  Does that mean that if Oregon doesn't specify, the Federal law applies?

Here is the link to the Oregon Law
http://www.oregon.gov/osmb/pages/safety/lifejacket.aspx

In my case, since I was on a displacement hull and training for a race, I want to argue that the exemption in the federal law would apply to me.  However, I see nothing of these exemptions in the State Law.

Thanks again for any insight.

Thank you for all the replies! The ticket gave me three options. Please guilty, plead guilty, but write a letter of explanation, or plead not guilty and they will set a court date.

I am vacillating between option two and three right now.

Thanks again for all the feedback was very helpful

SUP General / Ticket for no PFD on Oregon Lake
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:26:36 PM »
After about 8 years of SUPing I have never been stopped by anyone for a PFD and I was quite surprised to not just be stopped the other day but actually ticketed for $260.  A friend of mine got a ticket for going through a school zone at twice the posted speed limit and received a ticket for half that much.  Let's see... endangering the lives of children is less of an offence than some outside remote chance that having a PFD will save my life in flat water while standing on a giant floating device.

OK, enough of a rant:   I'm trying to decide if I will fight this is court:

Does anyone know when SUPs became classified as vessels?

And does anyone know if there is any legal argument for this clause on the Federal Regulations.
 (c) Racing shells, rowing sculls, racing canoes and racing kayaks are exempted from the requirements for carriage of any Type PFD required under §175.15.

Thanks.

Shane

bummed to here Tim is not shaping SUPs now.  But also glad to hear he has integrity to stick with a good product or rather go w/ no product at all.

I'm another person w/ a positive experience with Tim!  I love my Ninja Bump for 90% of what i surf. If i could surf more often, i'd probably get another board from him w/ a bit more of an aggressive shape.  Can't speek to the Imagine but love the Stamps.

I tried to make reservations there for this summer. Apparently that's not happening. All full... All summer. How early do you have to make reservations?

Follow this link to see the kind of surfing I enjoy seeing on SUP...
It is Chris Griffits surfing an Al Merrick 9'7" Caddie

Yeh... thats the kind of style i like too.  I get a bit bummed to see so much emphasis on quick turns and slashy surfing.  I really prefer the longboard style of soul surfing and love SUP videos that show this.   I see a lot of SUP videos w/ slashy turns and a lot of paddling once riding the wave.  I know everyone has their style but i just love to see soul surfing, especially while on a SUP.  However, to each their own... that's my 2 cents.

For what its worth i ride a 9'0" tim stamps ninja and as much as i try to ride w/ soul i know for a fact i have a lot of grace that yet needs to be aquired.

Gear Talk / Vent Plug - Traveling and Rain
« on: March 22, 2012, 07:09:46 AM »
I'm pretty good about opening my vent plug for changes in temp or traveling over passes.  However, when it is pooring rain water gets in my board bag.  Temps won't be changing that much but elevation will change from about 2,000 feet to 4500 feet and then eventually back to sea level.  Is this sufficiant air pressure difference to damage boards in general?  It is a custom board.

Sidebar: Here is a video of atmospheric pressure crushing a can,  and then my attempt at an explanation.

I get tired of trying to come up w/ workouts so I thought I might get some ideas from you people on the forum.  I'll start by posting a recent workout.

400 warm up

4x100 on 2:00 (go faster each 100 ~ think that is called decending)
4x100 on 1:45 (go faster each 100)
2x100 on 1:30 (1st one easy and the second one fast)  (probably should do 4 here but why should I really when no one is there to hold me accountable)

4 x 75 ~ 1st 25 moderate breathe every 5th stroke ~ 2nd 25 i pretend like i'm diving under waves as i make my way mostly under water to the other side.  The last 25 hard breathing every 7th stroke.

400 swim

100 easy

2200 yards if my math is right
