One is not better than the other, it is what suits you. Wing ding is a new discipline which I hope does not go down the path of windsurfing and get specialised to a point it priced itself out of the market with you needing so much kit a van was full, then all the gear was out of date next season. I love the fact I can fit my wing in one bag with the pump and that is all I need, or a paddle if the wind drops off. Handles work well for me, no need for extra stuff. Keep it simple s.... He who is having the most fun wins.

The add weight and hassle for next to zero gain just like booms . Lift the wing before you gybe.

I'd hang onto the Kai. It's actually a pretty good wing for wingfoiling once you get proficient, and not out of the question for surfing. You'll find that the amount of lift you can get from a wing is related to your skill as much as your weight and that changes quickly. I'm about 220# and the largest wing I use is 1700 sq in. and the smallest is 1200. Someone mega-skilled like Kane (195#) would call those "beginner wings"--actually, he pretty much did one afternoon at the harbor, though not in a disparaging way at all. The Iwa is about 1600-1800 and the Kai is 1200-1300 (there are no official GoFoil area numbers, just third-party measurements). I wouldn't call myself intermediate--despite several years of experience. More like an advanced geezer beginner on a torturously long learning curve.
1700 sq in?? What brand is that? Massive.

After a lot of wing changing and fiddling in different conditions I've settled on the Axis 1000/390 tail for winging. I'm going to stick with that for the rest of this Maui wingfoiling season and quit fucking around with wings so I can concentrate on learning and getting better.
That may come as a surprise after all my praise for the 1150 and tentative appreciation for the 1300, and how much fun the 860 is, but they are all sort of special-purpose wings, and the 1000 always works.
I'm stating this as much as a reminder for myself, that if I optimize my use of a single wing and get fully comfortable with it, I can ignore the foil characteristics and concentrate on form and technique.
Less change the better. I use chopped 1250, 60 fuse, 85 mast and 15" KD tail for both ding and sup foil.

Update on my poor 6M F-one that I dove through. I took it to airtime, they looked it over, and pointed out a minor problem that I somehow hadn't noticed--the leading edge was busted almost completely in half--just about an inch of it left intact. Like someone took a hot dog and snapped it in half. Not worth fixing.
That is weird I ripped my Wasp in half and got it fixed good as new. Can't really see it in the pic but the tear went up the canopy for 30cm as well.

Piros - what have you replaced the 980/1210 with these days?

Not even remotely interested. Flat water tricksters might like it and that is all. Will be ordinary in waves.

I crash as hard and as often as anyone, in fact, I'm more or less a pro at it, and I've never managed to damage a board with a boom.
Managed it a lot when learning. Front hard plastic to nose of board. And when wiping out in waves.

Sacrilege he trashed a great wing. The horror :' Handles are better
Really? Have you tried a boom? In my not so humble opinion handles suck donkey dicks. Childish, yes, I know, but you started it.
Yep had a Duotone. Why I do not like booms: Hard part that damages the board Hard part to fall on. I crash a lot Makes the package much larger in packdown Heavy, weight is huge factor riding waves I prefer using handles KISS, love the simplicity of pump and go Boomed wings behave oddly when flagged out Plus I do not want to be the odd man out and nobody uses booms here.

Light wind maybe Yesterday a guy went out without a leash (Forgot it and had a new board) first gybe feel off and the board was gone. He was lucky it was a rare cross on day not cross off or that board would have been lost. Expensive day with an Armstrong bolted to the bottom if you lose your board.

As always, great info Hilly. Thanks. Interesting you sold the 1850. I rode the 1550 on a Saturday in 20-35 knot wind and loved it and then rode the 1850 the next day in a little lighter conditions and was struck by how well the 1850 held up against the 1550. I've mostly only ridden the 1850 in all winds and SUP conditions as it's been my only wing; I'm pretty impressed with the range. Good to hear that the 1250 will still give enough grunt for a big guy in 6M air as well as offering better performance than the 1850 in the high end. Do you still have any use for the 1550?
Thinking of selling it when I get the 1050

VB Foil, Winged Surfer and others who have this foil, any further insights on set up for the HS 1250 for winging/prone/SUP? Still waiting for mine (since October!) and have read varying opinions on best set up. What are you liking about this foil? Any real downsides you've found? I'm pairing it with the HS 1850 at 200 pounds for SUP/winging and have been loaned an HS 1550 for a few weeks which has been amazingly easy and fun to ride. Is there much overlap between the 1250 and 1550, or would it make sense to own all three wings? Cheers!
I have owned the 1200, 1550, 1850 and 2400 use sup and wing 105kg/230lbs have had the 1250 for 2 months. It is my go-to wing now for everything I have sold the 1850 as it feels so slow now. With my 6m ding and using the -2 shim 60 fuse and 232 tail I can get going in very light wind. Vids below are using the 1250. I have the bucket hat on start of first vid.
