Yeah, I sent a pic of my OEM Starboard fin to Larry when we were on the phone and he was pretty confident this Hybrid would give some added stability.  But yes, when it arrived, I was puzzled how so as when you put the fins up next to each other, they are very close in size.  At least it wasn't one of the $100 fins.....   :-[

Fingers crossed the Atlas works out.  There a nice wood one in Orlando, but its more $$.  Not sure I'm willing to risk it quite yet.

Another thing.  Get a big stability fin like a Gladiator Elite or Hybrid or JL Tracker.  That will also help a bit to dampen roll - and make the board feel more stable.   ;)

I did pick up a Hybrid from Larry and was hoping that was my answer for the Elite Touring, but I didn't notice any less tippyness.  But yeah, I have it now so can experiment with it on the new board.

Yeah, to make matters worse, I am paddling in pretty protected flat water.  Tampa Bay and then thru some of the bayous.  There isn't a ripple on the water many times and my legs just feel like jelly wearing cement shoes, meanwhile I'm cursing up and down why I bothered to try again.

My wife liked the Blade, so that's always good, although she's pretty small so its probably way too big for her but it prevented her from having to buy something.  It's just that I have to do all of the work when she wants to go out.  But that's ok.

I believe you guys when you say TOW is important, and I do want to get there one day but just not sure I will with the currrent stuff I have.

thanks all

thanks for the thoughts - I'm 6'1" and 200 lbs.  I do think my balance stinks, although I consider myself to be somewhat fit.  I run most mornings with the dogs and try to lift 3-4 times a week.  I wouldn't call myself an athlete by any means, but probably a normal/average, early 40's Dad.  Not any medical issues I'm aware of, except about 20 extra lbs of fat I'd like to work off.

I really only think I probably have 10-15 hours on the water, but to be honest, I have such a bad time out each time, that it keeps setting me back.  I bought a 2nd board, then I bought a new fin, then I tried to go out a couple more times. I want to like the sport, but end up just hating the lack of balance and just end up sitting down to paddle.  It's super frustrating.

I think I just don't want to worry about balance, I just want to get out once a week and paddle for an hour and get fit.

Bummer to hear that the Atlas may not be what I'm looking for - but yeah, I don't really want to have 3 boards in garage that I can't use.

Do those Info balance boards help at all?  The one nice thing is that one of the Atlas I was looking at are 4-5 years old and just over $400, so its not a huge purchase.  But if this is the wrong board, then yeah, I would just hold off.

So I've purchased 2 boards so far (both in my sig).  The Elite Touring, the last purchase, while I thought was going to be stable enough for me, is just no fun to ride, just because I really dislike the tippy feeling (and I hate sharks, too).

I'm willing to give it one more try before just packing in with this sport.  I've tracked down a couple Starboard Atlas's.  At 33" wide, would this model give me a good amount of added stability over the 14' x 30" wide Elite Touring?

SUP General / Fin design questions
« on: May 31, 2016, 06:57:37 AM »
Hi All,

Got the Hybrid fin this past weekend.  I unfortunately didn't get a chance to paddle it yet, was busy all weekend, but after hearing such promising things about added stability, I was curious exactly what makes the difference over a stock fin.  It looks like there's a couple extra square inches of area.  Is it the shape?  Or a combo of both?

Seriously, you can get a ticket for surfing/SUPing?

hi Ralph, thanks for the reply.  I'll let you know.

At this point, I'm not sure if I have one on the way or not.  I ordered directly from Larry 6 weeks ago and have been promised "its in the mail tomorrow" twice.  Repeated phone calls, texts and emails have gone unanswered.  Just this weekend now I see there a temp charge on my card from a surf shop in San Diego, so I'm guessing that him. Whether or not one in the mail, I have no idea.  I guess I'll wait it out a little more just incase.   If not, I'll be in touch. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Does anyone have a hybrid fin they'd like to sell?  I'm looking for one.

I'm gonna try one of those flexbars, see how they do from me.  I've had pain my outer forearm for a couple weeks.  Last week, I was wincing from pain when shaking hands and lifting a pan full of food or water.  I self diagnosed as tennis elbow.

I have been trying to ice and ibuprofin and bought a copper sleeve.  No idea what set it off, I actually took some time off of lifting and haven't been paddling in a while.  But it's a bit scary cause just the little movements here and there are kinda painful.

thanks Larry, it seems for $5, it would make sense to just order the 2016 version.  This is the fin that will add the most stability, correct?

Where's the best place to order from?  http://www.allisonsupracefins.com/ ?

Does anyone have any experience with this fin, especially for adding stability to a board in flatwaters and maybe some light chop?

I can't seem to find much mention of it.

The fishing boards would make sense for a stable platform I would think.....

I'm going to check out a NSP Cocomat 11'6" cruiser today.  It's a bit more than I want to spend but it's 33" wide.  Will be sure to check out the bottom's shape.  Same shop also has a King's Knight, which I want to fondle.
