Downwind and Racing / San Juan PR Downwind runs with Velauno ???
« on: February 07, 2017, 08:25:39 AM »
Going to PR next week.
Anyone done DW runs with Velauno?

http://www.velauno.co/downwind/

Any tips?
Best way to hook up with others?
Thanks.

For me it depends on the setting.
If there is shore nearby that is reasonably accessible, I dont do meetups as much.
If it is open ocean with steep cliffs on the shore (like Davenport) defiantly set meetup points every couple miles.

Getting tired of this one.
Im on the water a lot, rivers, lakes, oceans. Like the rest of you.
I DONT see many bags in the water.
I DO see, cans, bottles, take out boxes & other stuff. (particularly on water with small motorboats).

If the green agenda is aiming at litter-trash, shouldn't they be looking at the other stuff?
Outlaw all of it and no more litter.

Im not against good green policy. I just dont see the 'plastic bags = water pollution' a factual reality.
Banning bags and other plastics to reduce GHG? Another matter.

Technique / Re: Upwind advice

All good points.

In addition, I choke up on the paddle, step forward, and do an extreme Hawaiian stroke, bent over all the way. (to reduce windage) As opposed to my more normal Tahitian stroke (more upright).

Headwind and sidewind paddling is the real challenge.
In races, where you follow the course and not cut up or downwind, it really sets the difference.
Anyone can paddle flat water. Chunky water with a headwind or sidewind, takes some true grit (or stupidity).
Not sure which.

Well done vid.  I have a suggestion, if you are interested.  Why not do this on a day where conditions, wind or current would move the board away from you?  Show them a worst case scenario of someone struggling to get to their board.   This vid didn't show potential consequences; only a little extra trouble to get your board, and it can end way worse than that.

This is already in the works - this is just part 1.
Thanks
Warren

Good idea. Show some clips from the Maliko Run vid with the boards flying away.
That will scare the crap out of anyone. Did for me!

Nicely done and presented Cruz!
I like that you covered up more of the black and added the EAA stickers.

jrandy- good for you. You noticed the 'experimental' sticker.
I did the work at my airplane hanger, and I was explaining the project to another flyer.
She suggested using the experimental sticker (required for home built airplanes). Thought it was a great idea.
If anyone asks, I'll say I work R&D for Naish.     8^)

Thanks for the feedback.

I have not noticed any significant difference in performance.
I was paddling my wide & slow NSP DC Race board during the project, so getting back on this faster board was nice but again, really hard to tell a big difference.
Gone through some small chop and boat wakes and I dont notice any flex in the board.

Funny part was when I first cut the rail off with a hack saw, the cross section showed a very thin black line on the outside, single carbon layer, with thick set fiberglass layup under.
Seemed like the carbon was more for show than function.

I have a 2012 Naish Javelin 12'6" GX that I like a lot for flat and semi-rough racing.
But I DONT like the raised rails on the top.
Not even like a sunken deck on a Starboard, just a 1"+/- raised rail on the top.
I like to get my toes out and curl on the rail from time to time. Its how I "feel" the board.
Plus pop-ups with the paddle across is a pain. And loading on the car rack is awkward.
So I decided to make a project of it and remove the raised rails and replace with standard flat top.
(needed a new deck pad anyway)

Below are some pics. I was going to try vacuum bagging some carbon fiber but did a hand layup of glass and carbon after advice on this forum.  Turned out pretty good. Doesnt do anything for the bottom of the board, thus no change in performance. Didnt expect any.  But was a fun fiberglass project for the first 2/3, then a pain to finish.  As usual.  I didnt check the weight to begin with, but my guess its about the same.

Thanks supuk. That's the layering input I was looking for. So a wet hand job for me. No vacuum bag.
Hey, Ive got some 4" carbon tape for sale. :D

I am not a fan of the sunken decks. At least the deep ones like the Starboard boards you can wedge your feet against the sides and get some stability. The mild raised rails on the Naish boards don't do much IMHO, and keep me from sliding my feet out and wrapping my toes around the rail if needed, like a sup-surf board.
I use this board for flat water only so the decreased freeboard doesn't matter.

Plus, it became an excuse to learn how to vacuum bag, but now may not do it per PB's comments.
Oh well.

Thanks PB for the reply.

I have spackled the EPS, and have about 1" for the tapers.
The Naish had a wood laminate on the deck under the deck pad area and wrapped around the raised rail a bit.
It all got removed as part of the 'flattening' of the deck. Kept the rest of the deck in place.  So I figure I need to support the outside portions of the deck with more glass or carbon where I removed the laminate.

When I cut off the raised rail, I was surprised by the thickness. Looked like several layers of glass (or some kind of poly-composite. And then just a thin layer of carbon on the top.  Made the carbon look like it was more decorative than structural.

Regarding the vacuum bagging, I am beginning to think I have first time on the project without practice is not a good idea. But Ive gotten impatient with the project and want to get the board back on the water. May just do a wet layup and move on with it.

I have removed the raised top rail of an older Javelin. See pics.
(its an experiment to use vacuum bagging for first time, and I don't like the raised rail.)
Wondering on layering for the deck, rail, and sides.
I have a 4" carbon tape but doesn't cover the full work area.
Thinking of the following . . .
Deck (with wood laminate removed at work area) - double 6 oz. glass or 6 & 4 oz. glass.
Rail - 4 oz. glass under with 4" carbon tape on top.
Sides- double 4 oz. glass.

Comments appreciated. Thanks.
