Share the Stoke / 5 on a Uli
« on: July 14, 2010, 11:51:31 AM »
Over the weekend, my family went to a 3 year old beach birthday party and took out the Uli.  It was perfect for everyone to try out and the best part was taking out the birthday boy and my daughter.

Floated pretty well with four of us on it

We had all five of us on it with the older girl and boy standing up while I had the kiddos in the middle.  A little tippy but a ton of fun.

SUP General / 9’-6” Nui Moana
« on: January 09, 2008, 02:38:41 PM »
I got my new board about a month ago.  It is 9’6” x 27.75” x 4.25”.  This board is more stable than my old 12’ softop and way more fun to surf.  I feel like I'm on a shortboard in comparison.  Because of the holidays and the rain, I’ve only been on it a couple of times in waist high conditions.  Hopefully, I can make some time soon and get out for this weekend’s swell.  It is an understatement to say this is an improvement over my 12’ softop.

Oh, I’m 5’-6” and weigh 150 pounds.  Enjoy the pictures.

SUP General / Basic SUP Instruction

I found a basic instructional video on youtube.  It has good basic information and shot in warm, clear water.

Sessions / Sierra Nevada
« on: October 01, 2007, 02:23:04 PM »
I just spent the last 5 days up in Bass Lake in the Sierras.  It was gorgeous up there and we had the lake to ourselves on the weekdays.  By the weekend, there were maybe 10 boats in the water so we had plenty of space for us.  It was a great way to introduce my daughter to the mountain lifestyle.  Just waiting until next summer when she is old enough to sit upright so I can take her cruising around the lake. :)  Great bike riding up there too.

Sessions / Almost alone in Huntington Beach
« on: August 27, 2007, 10:24:56 AM »
I took the SUP out on Saturday to Huntington State Beach and found the lineup crowded as expected.  Took 1 or 2 inside wave before paddling off to find a lone break.  I went north and 10 minutes later found 2 side by side breaks with no one on it and it was fun waist high waves.  I was going back and forth between the 2 breaks for an hour.  When I paddled back to my starting point, there were even more people in the water.  Since starting on the SUP I've caught much more uncrowded waves in crowded So Cal.  Who would have known?  Another great day.

Sessions / Saturday with the family
« on: August 19, 2007, 09:19:12 AM »
Yesterday was a great day to be out.  It was hot inland so the beach was the call.  I went down to San Onofre (thanks Allan for all the San O advice) early in the morning.  It was my 2 month old daughter's first beach day (and certainly not the last).  She did great! :)  Luckily we parked next to a big RV group and caught a lot of their shade.  I did figured out that I need to get an E-Z Up for these family trips so I can keep my wife and daughter comfortable.

I had two friends come down to try my boards (his and hers 12' softops with Kialoa Nalu paddles) and they also took over the babysitting duties while my wife and I were in the water.  We only started SUP last year and the last time my wife was in the water was November.  It was also her first time trying SUP with waves and she even caught a wave on her knees!  Luckily yesterday was a knee to waist high day so she was comfortable with the wave size.

The SUP/surf skis guys at San O are really cool.  When I reached the line up, all I heard was laughter from everyone having a good time.  It was such a friendly atmosphere.

Basically, it was a great day.

SUP General / San Onofre question
« on: August 14, 2007, 05:08:48 PM »
Hi all,

It seems there are a couple of people here from the So Cal area so hopefully someone will be able to answer this.  I've been doing SUP since last year (still not that good and probably worse after my daughter was born because I hardly go out) but only in the Newport and Huntington area while I lived in Newport.  I've since moved a bit inland and still haven't tried SUPing in SanO.  I've heard that SUPs are restricted to certain areas.  Is that true?  If so, how can I tell if I am in the right place?

How about padding north to Church's?  or even further north?  Is that off limits to SUPs?

Any help would be great.  I don't want to piss off a bunch of people and give SUPs a bad name.
