Hi everyone, I don't do many SUP related posts on my blog, but when I do I make sure to report here. Specially when they are about something "relatively" new that might interest some of the Zone readers. I put a front foot strap on my board and here's my review: http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2011/04/strapped-sup-anyone.htmlThanks for reading! GP

For the first time in many years, I'm actually enjoying summer time in Maui. The reason is that now I have a board that I can have fun with even in small waves. I rode so many of them, that I feel like sharing something that I noticed. On small waves, I like to have small everything: - small board - small blade - small (short) shaft - small fins - small leash I haven't pushed it yet to small board shorts, but I may have to give it a try! For me, more agility is the key for having fun in waves that don't offer too much of a face to work on. Maybe you guys knew this already, but I had to go through a process of testing, so I figured maybe I'll save someone some time/money. The paddle thing is major. A big blade makes a short board turn too much at each stroke. And with a shorter shaft, you can compensate the reduced power of a smaller blade by increasing the SPM (strokes per minute). Any comments appreciated. More info on the gear in this post: http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2010/07/5-hours.html

I'm 155 (70kg) and lately I had the chance to test a couple of short starboard boards (all in clean knee to waist high surf). I'm blown away by how well these guys seem to have figured out these shapes. I had three sessions on the pocket rocket 8.5x30 and here's what I feel like pointing out: - very stable at that size - super loose - overall very fun Then I had one session on a 7.4x29.5. The balance was a bit more challenging, but still not bad at all. The board doesn't move much when you paddle (just like a regular shortboard), so you need to take off in a steeper section of the wave. But once on the wave... oh my. Thanks to the aid of the paddle, I was able to achieve turn radiuses and cutbacks that I still can't quite get on my regular shortboard (I started shortboarding one year ago, so I'm still a novice in this area). Soon I should be able to try a 7.11, which I think it's a better match for my weight/ability and I'll report my impressions here. Just one more thing: after those four sessions, I took out my Kazuma 9.3x27.5 and here's what I feel like reporting as a comparison: unnecessarily unstable. The board had a lot more drive, but in knee to waist high summer waves (south shore of maui has softer waves than north shore winter waves), drive is more of a bad thing than a good one. Cheers. PS. Super fun surfing these days in Maui. After a first couple of fantastic regular surfing sessions I had to switch to standup (much easier on my back). Still heaps of fun, but one thing has been bugging me though. About 80% of the pack of standup surfers (that now outnumber the regular ones in some breaks) is absolutely unrespectful of the etiquette and hog the waves leaving little chance to regular surfers to have their share of fun. I thought about having made custom lycra shirts to wear when to go SUP surfing. On the back: "Regular surfers can drop in on me (as long as it's safe)" On the front: "I'm not going to take advantage of my unfair advantage in catching waves" or, if that is too long: "Unfair advantages bug me". That would give a strong message to the other standup surfers, don't you think? Please post a comment here or on my blog http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2008/11/how-kazuma-shaped-my-custom-surfboard_16.html if you have ideas for other sentences or if you want to join the initiative and share the cost of it.

...here's what can happen: http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2008/07/shark-attack.htmlSorry, I wanted to add this to that old thread in which somebody was wondering why an SUP beginner is more dangerous than a lay down beginner, but I couldn't find it... Be safe and teach safety. Aloha.

I feel kind of weird posting this, since I don't really come on this forum much... (reason is that I'm not nearly as much into SUP surfing as you guys). But, since I did an effort in editing a little SUP surfing video, I thought about sharing it here, so that I might inspire someone to do the same... Enjoy! http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2007/08/sup-surfing-at-thousand-peaks.html
