Training, Diet, and Fitness / At home training ap?
« on: January 20, 2021, 11:49:42 AM »
Hola boyos.

So, just like many of you I've packed on some extra weight during COVID. I used to be in the gym consistently and prone surfing 2-3 times a week. During C19 and finishing my masters at the same time these have dropped off and my fitness level has gone down the tubes. I was never ripped/shredded by any stretch of the imagination but as Damon Wayans said in the great white hype, I'm in shape, I'm round!

I need to do something. I've started walking the dog and have been clocking ~20 miles a week. But that's not enough for the rest of me. The Gyms near me are either closed or require a mask, have an occupancy restriction and increased C19 risk. Together, that makes me uncertain about going into a gym today.

Working out at home is the next option. I'd love to put a weight pile in the back yard but to get it happily stocked I'm looking at spending $2K-ish (did I mention I'm a starving college student?).

That leads me to the home-workout-without-equipment aps. Have any of you used one? Which ones? Thoughts? Feedback?

Classifieds / Looking for a book! (surf related)
« on: January 27, 2019, 02:09:45 PM »
Hello Gents! I know this is a really well read group and I'm hoping that someone here has a copy of this book. The book is "The Surfers Mind" by Richard Bennett (ISBN:9780975206409). It seems that I can still buy it from Australian sources but getting it to California is a problem. So who's got one they'd like to sell on can ship to CA?

And for those with different thoughts...

SoCal / Seal Beach Closure
« on: June 06, 2017, 08:13:22 AM »
The wife told me about this last night

*Pasted from the OC Register*
SEAL BEACH — A stretch of the beach from the San Gabriel River to the Seal Beach pier will be closed until at least Sunday morning, June 4, after a paddle boarder collided with a 5-foot shark, officials said.

The Saturday, June 3, shark sighting is one of multiple such instances along Orange County recently, with the predators showing up in increasing numbers over the last two years.

Around 11 a.m. on Saturday, a stand-up paddle boarder caught a wave and hit the shark on the north side of the beach. The paddle boarder was not injured and his board was not damaged, said Mike Diller, a marine safety officer for Seal Beach.

Lifeguards did a brief search for the shark and then closed down the beach. It is unknown what type of shark it was.

“We don’t know the shark’s mindset,” Diller said. “So we closed it out of caution.”

Officials will scan the area again Sunday morning and, if the waters are clear, re-open the beach.

Because of “June gloom,” Diller said there weren’t that many people at the beach when it was closed.

Random / I need techie advice above and beyond that of mortal men....
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:41:36 AM »
Here's the situation: may father-in-law, a prince of a guy is getting a little squirrely with his dementia and we're worried about him wondering off but really don't want to but the clamps on his freedom just yet. I'm looking for something like a watch that we can use to locate him. The idea of giving him an Iphone came to our minds but he'd either lose it or give it away every 45 days. With the ranges that might be involved blue tooth is out and the solution is likely something using the cellular network. So, tech giants is there a device that has this functionality?

SoCal / Curse of the Open

Is the ghost of Sean Collins holding the swell down every time this event gets to the later rounds? Watching the semis it's coming down to who get's the better waves.

just curious about the body type of those doing well here and the missing swell, do the "normal BMI" surfers not show because there's no energy and the fly weights have the advantage?

Was out at Bolsa this morning and it was maybe thigh high with long lulls. Pacific Bay.

SUP General / It's Wednesday! Time for another swell!!
« on: September 17, 2014, 07:26:40 AM »
How about you nice folks who get to be out in the world today share some pics of the swell that's hitting So Cal right now from TS Odile. Us office dwellers that are on lock down until the end of business would really appreciate it.

And to contribute something in return: HB South of the pier and city beach looked really interesting with the sand bars moved around and swell angle, mushy but HH/OH. Northside I could not see because of the AVP tents. HB cliffs looked to be around HH sets with some nice sections.  Bolsa was right out, waist high and poor shape.

Random / Cord Cutting
« on: June 04, 2014, 01:58:23 PM »
I moved my family a week ago and we're going to give cord cutting (no satellite or cable TV) a go. We were the family that had a $160/month Sat bill and a $50/month ISP bill.

I'm using an X Box one and an Apple TV as my sources and I'm feeding them 75MB Fios. So far I've got the Xbone set up with Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix. All three are pay services but instead of $210/mo I'm looking at $74 and as soon as we figure out which holds more value Hulu or Netflix one of those will go away. We easily cover the cost of Prime in shipping so it'll stay for now.

Tonight I'm going to pick up an over the air antenna for local broadcasts and find the Apply TV remote so I can get it running.

I'm really new to this. I'm sure there are some here that can help a newb like me out. So, if you cut the cord please share where/how you are getting your content.

Thanks in advance,

OS213 (now in the heart of the 714!)

Random / Selling/Buying a house
« on: March 05, 2014, 08:23:51 AM »
So the wife and I have made the decision to move. Thus far we've only ever bought houses and for the first time we have to sell one. We're just starting the process and I'd like any guidance on; what kind of questions should I ask prospective realtors, what items are negotiable in today's environment . The money question: with an average sales price for the LA/OC area what's the "typical" commission? What point should I be insistent on? What pitfalls do I need to watch for?  You know... everything.

Then there is preparing the house for sale. We're already de-cluttering. We've chased paintbrushes around the inside and are fixing to do the same externally. All open projects are getting finished up, etc. What would you say are the *must do's* and what are the nice to do's?

So, what advice would you give this first time home seller?
