This may explain that whole walking on water thing!  ;D

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice and open the door,
I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me." Jesus, Revelation 3:20

All in good fun kids...  ;)

Gear Talk / Open for some input on board choice...

I've been real happy with Hobie products so far.. had a 10'6" ATR, a 12'6" HellCat (hand shaped/glassed Elite)

I just sold a couple boards and have $1500+ to spend. I'm leaning heavily towards either a hand laid, used Hobie 14' or a new 14' Elite BCX+C.

I've paddled Barks  and the Hobie14, owned an M&M 14 and a Tahoe Zephyr.

I'm 5'11"  185# and doing flat bay or near shore SoCal Ocean paddling.

Let me know if you've got a favorite board I've missed....

70 sumpin degrees, 10pm, perfect glass.

Lost a friend to a dive accident this weekend, found out tonight.

Wasn't sure what to do so just went out under a 3/4 moon and paddled.

These silly boards will fix just about anything, won't they....

SUP General / This SUP thing seems to be catching on...

What a weekend! I've seen more SUPs in the past 4 days than I can count.

I keep a boat in La Playa Cove in SD CA. Lokes know it, but for the rest of you it's mostly a yacht basin with marinas around the perimeter, open water in the middle roughly 3/4 mile x 1/2 mile. On weekends the open water is filled with anchored yachts. For the 4th most folks are partying like Kennedys for 4 days.
At best guess, I would say I saw 30-40, maybe 50 paddlers on the water at the same time this weekend, every day!  If I could count all the boards I saw on the boats and shore, 80-100 would be a good guess. Un- effing- believable!

I took 6 people for their first paddle myself over the course of the weekend. I probably spent almost 20 hours on the water over the last 4 days, I'm fried.

All this in one little patch of water...

How was it in your neck of the woods?

Sessions / Finding your stroke...

Perfect flatwater, I mean pre-dawn, glass, see the clouds reflected in the water kinda perfect. Quiet as a tomb, couple of gulls cry in the distance...

And then, all the training and practice clicks in and the stroke is flowing. Effortless, silent, powerful paddling. You feel the muscles as they recognize the rhythm and take over. No splash, no cavitation, no noise, just the whisper of drips off the blade on the return swing.

Sweet.

Downwind and Racing / Yeah, I'm feeling ready...

Just did my last long training run for my upcoming race.
Set a new PR, covered 15m in 3.5hr.  (2/3 lumpy open water and 1/3 flat bay)

That put me just over my goal of a sustained 4mph!  Light breeze on the nose and no surfing bumps! Just paddle pwer.

Didn't fall down once!  Sat down twice for a 5min rest and Clif bar.

Did get some funny looks at the club with a post workout Heineken in the hottub at 10am.  :D

Hydration? tension? technique?

Got a hot pinch in between the shoulder blades on a 20 miler, trying to figure it out.

Input?

Gear Talk / Wow, Morelli and Melvin!

I mean, effing WOW.  :o

Picked up a lightly used Boardworks M+M design on the classifieds here.

14'x27" with their wave piercing bow.  I'm familiar with M+M from their yacht designs. They have done some smokin catamarans from the 165lb A-Cats to big performance cruising cats in the 60' range.

Rather than the board shapes coming from a soul shaper with a surf background, this board has its roots in computer models and test tanks.

It. Flat. Rocks!  I went out for my morning 5 miler and  took 10 minutes off my PR on my 12'6" Hobie Hellcat. This while still struggling with the wobblies getting used to a new board 2" skinnier.

This thing is slicker than a teflon banana peel.
I hope I can get it mastered for the Bay2Bay in 3 weeks!

Technique / FLAT water distance training? How far is far?
« on: January 19, 2011, 05:50:19 PM »
I Know about the big channel crossings, Molokai, Catalina, etc. With many of those, swell or catching "bumps" becomes part of the ride.
What about dead flat water? Say, calm Tahoe, The Delta, Mid western big lakes or rivers.

Who is going long?  How long?  Sustained long speeds?

We have the Bay2Bay 20 miler here in San Diego. It's a mix of ocean and bay, but even the open water doesn't promise sustained rides.

I'm training for the Bay2Bay but am really winging it.

Any thoughts?
