Gear Talk / So why aren't paddle blades matt-finished?
« on: October 07, 2013, 04:43:08 PM »
Just putting this out there and I'll freely confess I haven't spent much time thinking about it yet. If we believe there are performance benefits from a matt surface on our boards, why don't we have a matt surface on our paddle blades?

So here's my crude thinking...during the catch and power phase, blade is mostly upright and perpendicular to the direction of travel so it probably wouldn't make much difference...but in the recovery phase, would a slipperier surface make for quicker recovery as the blade is feathered? (quicker recovery has got to be good...right?) Would the same go for entry?

Discuss.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / SUP from/near/at NYC?
« on: August 30, 2012, 03:16:11 AM »
Any recommendations for SUP hire/tours close handy to the city? I'm coming over for a conference 8/9 Sept and I'm taking a few days to poke around NYC before the work starts. Would love to SUP NY if it's doable, will be staying midtown mon-fri next week and (mostly) limited to venues within easy reach by public transport.

Gear Talk / Coreban EZ 10 vs Fanatic Allwave 9'10" for heavyweight ?
« on: August 11, 2012, 11:40:16 PM »
Any big guys our there have a comparative view on these boards?

6'2, 260lb here, neophyte surfer just about ready to step down from my 12 foot cruiser (I reckon) , still wanting up around 200 litres to float me. Surfed a demo Coreban EZ in waist-ribs high and liked it a lot. SB Whopper Extra might be an option but not sure if I really want/need to go 36" wide (?), there isn't a demo of it or the Fanatic available where I am. Tried 10' Mana and the Cabrinha around that size and didn't much like them. Pretty much limited to those majors where I live (SE OZ).

The Shape Shack / Starboard silver match?
« on: July 21, 2012, 10:46:54 PM »
Don't know if this is the right place to put this but is there an off-the-shelf rattle can paint match for starboard silver? I can find the Pantone code for the colour (877 silver CVC) but is there an off the shelf match?

SUP General / Flow?
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:32:04 PM »
Think I finally found some, after a year of dogged paddling.

Went out this morning with no particular mission in mind, into some 1-2ft chop, it was raining a bit with a light tailie on the outward leg. Had some fun chasing little conveyor-belt runners on the way out. When I turned for home the breeze had come up a bit and the chop had risen a foot or so and was quartering, conditions that usually call for my full attention and a couple of swims but today it went differently. At some point I realised I'd got almost all the way back to home base without thinking about it. I've felt it doing other things, not before today on a SUP. Progress in the absence of conscious effort, when you least expect it.

Magic.  8)

Gear Talk / Suplove Stingray - ride report anyone?
« on: December 16, 2011, 01:46:11 PM »
Anyone have experience of the Stingray, especially in messy/sloppy chop? Intriguing design but it seems to be all about flat water and lighter riders? Anyone?

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Crossfit for SUP?
« on: November 09, 2011, 01:44:23 AM »
Did a couple of searches but didn't find much (could have been asking the wrong questions?) I have to put my beloved bikes away for a while due to a very cycling-specific hip problem so I'm looking for something else to fill the space - anyone here able/willing to share a view on Crossfit as a complement to SUP?

Gear Talk / Fin selection for flat water tracking (big cruiser)
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:23:17 PM »
Noob here - newly on a Starboard Atlas which I'm liking very much. I've been experimenting a little with trim. The board comes as 2+1, the stock centre fin is 8 1/2" x 5" sickle shape with a fair bit of rake.

The board has a really nice glide for 33 inches wide but I'd like to make it track a bit better in flat water and light chop If I can (2-3 more paddle strokes each side would be nice). I've taken the side fins off and set the centre fin back a bit - seems to have helped but am I right in thinking I could do better with a bigger/different single?

I've seen crazy long "downwind" fins up to about 15" with narrowish bases, "race" fins around 10-11 inches with wide bases and more of a sickle shape - what's going to get me better tracking while maintaining good glide?

(I've used the search function and read Pono Bill's artice but I'm still a bit in the dark)
