SUP General / Stolen C4 on Kauai!
« on: November 22, 2009, 01:47:43 PM »
Stolen Last night on Kauai's east side : 10'6" C4 Sup board.  Blue deck with Grey Deck pad & Orange C4 logo on it, White bottom, Black nose guard. It belongs to my friend's wife and was stolen out of the back of a truck of a friend of ours that he had lent it to.  Truck was parked by the Islander on the Beach. My friend tells me he bought it used and that it is unusual both in its color scheme and in that it has no stringer ? i dunno bout C4s except that they are pricy...im a PSH guy myself ;D.
Any how, if any of my Kauai brethren see this board out in the line-up or for sale hit me up here and i can take it from there.  my friend is a VERY nice guy, but is pretty old school when it comes to justice, so if you happen to know the perp, emphasize  how small this island is and that its not too late to make arrangements to return the board no questions ask. Gear Talk / costco SUP boards...
« on: September 27, 2009, 08:51:45 PM »
talked to to a friend that chatted with the rep in our costco. they were running board, fins, bag & generic wood paddle for around 9 hundred something for  9-10 footers and 11 hundred for 11-12 footers if i remember right. boards looked ok...sort of PSH AA-like except with a less aggressive rocker and a big bulbous nose. shaper from the B.I. , epoxy pop-outs .  in my limited opinion they were not for performance surfing...more for beginners and the curious....user friendly i suppose.
the rep told my friend that they had sold ( as of 2 days ago) 35 boards !!! im thinking...OMG we are so gonna be seeing these people out in the lineups.... the rep told him : " most of the people that bought them are beginners...you wont see them out in the lineup".......um..how much you wanna bet? cheap boards + beginners+ lineups = friction x danger =  >:(
next time i go in to costco, ive got to remember to ask the rep what they are doing as far a educating their buyers about reading conditions , staying within their limitations and how to surf politely.  i have a sneeky suspicion that there wasnt alot of educating going on while the money was changing hands...
   thoughts?

SUP General / gotta vent a little...
« on: September 23, 2009, 01:37:05 AM »
had fun today at our favorite eastside break. glass, with the occasional overhead set. all the usual suspects out and having ourselves a nice morning on the water.  out paddles two heros on a 2 man surf ski.  they park outside of the lineup and proceed to take off on the very first set wave and hoot and howl their way straight down the wave right through the line-up causing everyone to literally scatter and paddle like crazy to try and avoid contact.  i happend to be in the most direct line as they laughed their way down the wave. i paddled furiously and managed to avoid getting impaled as they cackled their way by.  " what the hell was that all about??!!" was the general opinion of everyone that got scattered.  this happend a couple more times.  i had enough.  i posted myself outside where they were and waited until something a little meatier came rolling through. i paddled hard and pulled in, pumped down the line a bit and there they were trying to shoulder hop as i knew they would be. i held my line, and didnt bother pretending that i was actually trying to surf the wave--i pretty much made a b-line towards them... ""Hey hey! " they yelled.  "heyheyhey yourselves!!!" was my reply and to their credit they backed off the wave. a guy that had been out with us that knew them started small talking me : " hey you're really shredding today" and waved over to them" hey so-and-so ! hows it going?", and then told me how they all used to charge big waves etc... like he was trying to give them a pass or something... a senior member of the lineup gave me kudos for putting them in their place, so im pretty comfortable with what i did.  i came no closer to them than they came to me--except that i was in control of myself and they were not when they came zooming through and almost hit me. they hung out further inside and to the side after that and  quietly caught a wave in shortly after.  the point here is that we were having a good time &  they were having a good time.  all they had to do was be a little more ..um, respectful of the line-up and there wouldnt have been an issue.  thoughts?

Gear Talk / Camera housings...
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:27:58 PM »
ok, hope this is the right place for this...im a very enthusiastic amateur shooter and have been furiously browsing the web for camera housings for either of my two DSLRs.  id love to mix my love of photography and my passion for SUP and shoot my buds and i having fun.  im aware of the whole GO-PRO set-up and i think they are great, especially for the price, but what im wanting to do is potentially produce high quality prints and to do that im sure my 5D or even my xt would be more suited.
anybody have a line on any companies or individuals that produce housings ( either custom or stock) for DSLRs ? ive found a few online but would like to see what others may be using before deciding. is there a 'used '  housing market place that i can checkout?
also, since im new to in the water surf shooting--whats the preferred lens type...mid range telephoto....or more of a wide angle....?
mahalo for any and all advice and input. aloha!

Gear Talk / adding a Tail-kick
« on: November 29, 2008, 12:26:34 PM »
i have seen a few boards out here where the owners have installed tail-kicks. im curious as to the pros and cons , if any.  a friend of mine said he put it right over the sweet spot on his tail and that the actual wedge part was more of a marker to let him know when his foot is too far back.  as far as putting it over the sweet spot--how crucial is it to nail that location?  is there a sure fire method , or general rule as to where it exactly is?  does it move perceptively if i move my center fin forward or back? im on a PSH 10'3" AA with its stock 2+1 fin set-up. hope this question isnt too convoluted...
  thanx for any input...

« on: September 14, 2008, 07:29:22 PM »
almost no winds, buttery shoulder high to occasional over- head waves....all along the east side today...i mean it was good everywhere, even places that ive never seen good, were great.  looked sooo fun--thats the key word : "looked" , cause i could only watch-- im still recouping from my pulled oblique  :'(
just had to cry on someone's shoulder since my wife is tired of hearing me moan....thanks.

SUP General / Pulled or tore something this morning...
« on: September 08, 2008, 02:20:52 PM »
Aloha gangy!  Stroking to pull into a wave this morning I felt a sharp pop/rip low on my right side ( the side i was stroking on), just above the hip, all the way up to my lowest rib.  Pain was so sharp it stopped me cold, knocked me into the water.  Once I struggled back onto my board I found it impossible to stroke with any power at all on that side and had to limp to shore and call it a day.  Now that Ive cooled down its actually getting more sore --when I twist, lean, sitting up, bending over--almost every movement is killing me.  I think its my Oblique thats injured.  This does not bode well for my immediate SUP future, but I was wondering :  has anyone else experienced this? and if so, what is my expected recovery time?  Also, what , if any treatments were helpful?  How about rehab and re-injury prevention?  Thanks for any help.
  Mahalo.

Gear Talk / Soft-top repair?
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:13:19 PM »
I hope this is the right place for this...I just picked up a couple of VERY used Soft-tops from a local rental place. They are for my kids to fool around with, especially my 13 y/o to try SUPing, to see if he likes it with out springing for a big $$$ board.  I got them cheap, but you get what you pay for...
Anyhow, they both have splits in the nose, where the plastic is seperating from the foam.  These splits were repaired by the shop owner using 5200 marine glue.  There looks to be a small crack that could use sealing--what should i use for this? Polyurethane caulking comes to mind...?  Should I trim away the ragged foam around the crack and clean it with de-natured alcohol before sealing?
Also, there are numorous little cuts on the rails, with little foam flaps that need to be glued back down.  And also a few where the foam is just plain gone...what would work to glue/fill these with?
And , on the bottom there are some cracks that have already been repaired--I think with some type of clear epoxy--how could I fill them in better ?
I googled this but came up kind of empty....any help would be great!
Im not too worried about color or looks.  I really just want to seal them up tight.
  Mahalo, Stan
