I know there are often issues winging in the harbour and I want to be sure I stay clear and safe.

Would someone please go over the rules maybe even set up a STICKY so that it is clear what is OK and not OK.  If rules change they can be brought up to date.

Thank You.

I am interested in this board but would like to hear from those who are using or have used them.  The only bit if review so far as I have found was on Seabreeze.
Which one do you have, your weight and how it works.
Thanks, John

After reading a lot of forums about boards it appears to me that there is not that much that really matters.  I want to check my conclusions here.
Size matters to some extent:
Larger is way better to learn with.   (Volume, length and width)
Heavier people need much larger boards.  Lighter ones smaller

Shape:
Breaking free of the water is a big issue that most boards seem to deal with at this point.

Weight:
Lighter is always better as we age.

Cost:
For some.  But probably you get what you pay for.

Materials:
They all seem to be pretty close to the same construction

Are there other factors I am missing?
Thanks.

In my reading I have come across many people saying that foil learners should get the biggest front wing possible for easier learning.  This makes total sense.
However, there is a huge difference between a 190 lb person and a 130 lb person.  Can the lighter person go with a smaller wing or is it just better to go with a big one?  This is for a light wind area.
Thanks.

From my reading here and in Seabreeze I came to the conclusion that a 5m Fone Swing was what would work for me.  Then, the other day I was talking to some of the very experienced foil people on the beach and they are saying that 5m is too big for me.  NoI do not have any foiling experience yet.

Me: Age 74, 130lbs, 5’5.5” tall. Pretty good shape.
Experience: 9 years kiting plus windsurfing and SUP paddling/surfing.
Area where I will be flying:  Okanagan/Penticton-generally lighter winds
Vancouver-English Bay.  I am pretty much a fair weather water sports person at this point and will not be out in the cold or in very high winds.  In the summer and fall the winds are generally quite light in English Bay which is why I was considering the 5m over a 4m.

Any thoughts on this sizing issue would be greatly appreciated.
Just to stir the soup a little more which would be a better wing for this the FOne Swing or the Ozone Wasp for these conditions?
Thanks.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Question about weights
« on: September 22, 2019, 09:16:15 PM »
As I get ready to buy some equipment and have been reading a lot here and other places I notice that some people talk about how heavy these rigs are to get to the beach and back from parking lots.  I was at our kite beach the other day and picked up some different kite foils and board.  Some were quite light and others significantly heavier.

I would like to go the lighter route as I am about the age of PonoBill but not nearly as tall.  As I age I have said that “carbon fibre is my friend” and “everything has to get lighter as I age”.  I looked at a Signature 184 and it weighed in at just under 7 lbs.  I came across a description of the NP Glide Surf and it was around 10 lbs.

How low are some of your weights?  What did you have to do to get them that low?
Thanks in advance.

SUP General / Handles on SB All Star
« on: April 08, 2016, 07:17:22 AM »
I am looking a buying a used All Star.  It has the handles on each side but none in the middle.  Somewhere I have seen a handle in the centre.

Because of arm/shoulder problems I need a handle in the middle. What is the best way to put one in?  Are there plugs to attach one to or can I just screw one in?

Thanks, John

I am wondering what advantages anyone might have found with alternate fins for the Competitor.

I would like to hear from anyone who has one of these boards. I am a light weight at 135 and not very tall and want a light board.  I paddled a carbon 404 last summer and really liked it but to me it was heavy, especially when we own a Honda Element with high roof racks.  They say in the ads for these that they will work for people 100 to 200 lbs.  That seems like a pretty big range.  Any lightweights got one and can comment?  Any other owners feel free to weigh in on this.
thanks, John

SUP General / Why aren't more women in SUP? Here is one answer.
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:59:19 AM »
A few months ago a question like this was asked.  There are some answers in that thread but I think the answer is more clear in the recent thread "Hot chicks on stand up paddleboards".

Why would women want to be around men with the kind of attitude this of thread is based on? I am referring to the attitude that women are sex objects and should be glorified as such.

I vote to grow up and promote a healthy perspective towards all and remove this thread from the forum.

Gear Talk / Lightweight Looking for a board to surf smaller stuff
« on: June 16, 2011, 10:00:38 AM »
I have been reading a lot about the different boards in this forum.  However, so few seem to apply to me.  I am light at 135, 5'5" and 65 years old.  I have a Starboard Pin that is really good for flat water.  I have surfed an Angulo Surfa 9' and a 10' Mana on Maui.  DP says go for the 9'6" mana but it is still quite thick.

What I find is that a lot of board are going to be too floaty for me because of my weight but I do not want to go too short on length to make up for this.  I am in BC, Canada and the waves I will be going in are small and mostly mushy.  We do not have a lot of boards to demo here so the choice ahead of purchase is critical.

My thoughts go towards the Drive, Element, Caddie 10', Laird Pearson 10' 5".  Cabrinha 10' 5" (2011)
Has anyone in my weight range paddled these and can give me some feedback?

thanks,
John

Gear Talk / Al Merrick 10' 1" Caddie reviews?
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:49:00 PM »
I have found a little information on this board but would like more if anyone owns one or has exprerience on one.   I am 65, weigh 135lb and am 5'5" tall.  I have experience with Surfa 9' and Mana 10' for comparisons.  I am thinking of this board for surfing.   Thanks, John

Gear Talk / SB Drive: Which flavour?
« on: May 28, 2011, 09:50:02 PM »
I am moving closer to a board and get totally discombobulated when I look at the Starboard catalog and the different builds.  You get better fins and different decking as you spend more.  But, I have some questions as a result.
Does anyone have a weight for any of the different builds of the Drive?  AST, Silver, Carbon.
Is the carbon much lighter than the AST?  I keep wondering if I bought a carbon and put regular decking on it will it weigh just as much as a silver one.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks, John

Gear Talk / Anyone tried the new Cabrinha boards?
« on: May 05, 2011, 07:33:35 AM »
From what I can gather the new Cabrinha SUP boards are now made in the Cobra factory and are much better and best of all lighter than the 2010's.  Has anyone had a chance to try them out?  I am especially interested in the 10' 10".

Gear Talk / Quickblade length change
« on: February 23, 2011, 12:58:33 PM »
Hi everyone
I have been looking for some time for an article in here on changing the length of Quickblade paddles but can't find it.
I want to shorten my Kanaha about 3.5 inches and hope to keep the end handle and not buy an new one.
If you have done this or can point me to the thread I would appreciate it.

thanks, John
