SUP General / Happy Ending! Stolen boards recovered

STOLEN BOARDS RECOVERED ONE YEAR LATER!
Here's the story. Almost exactly one year ago at Third Coast's Sweetwater SUP Challenge in St. Joesph's, Michigan we had 4 paddle boards (2 race and 2 surf) + 2 paddles stolen from our trailer overnight from a very nice hotel parking lot. Huge bummer to say the least especially since we woke up to find the boards gone on Father's Day.

Fast forward almost a 363 days… So a fellow racer, Chris Matulis from St. Joseph, MI friended me on Facebook 4 days before this year's race. He sent a link to a Craig's List posting in Grand Haven with images of all 4 of our boards! I was in shock. Shocked to see all of our boards together and shocked to realize how dumb criminals really are.

I contacted the officer that we dealt with last year and they went undercover as a buyer last Friday and met the guy. With the photo evidence we had supplied them of repaired dings, stickers, unique markings, etc. they arrested him on the spot and he gave a full confession. Crazy, crazy, crazy. Boards are a little dinged up but we get to see them this weekend and hopefully return shortly to bring them home in a week or so.

Lake Erie is frozen. The Arctic Vortex has a stranglehold on us so when not drinking double IPAs we just try to fill the void with some hill SUPing on inflatables and soft tops... unsuccessfully but had a blast. The two hill hold downs were gnarly.

The BIC SUP advertisement banner on this site has my pic slapped all over the site from last year's Paddle Royal. Me in brown, orange, blue striped shorts. Ed Pierce is to my right.

It's just odd coming to the Zone and feeling like a somebody, ha! 

Btw, Jamie Torres' Paddle Royal is a fantastic, well run race experience. Paddling around Old San Juan is something you'll keep with you for a long time. Will miss this year's race as I am taking the family to Nosara this year in late December.

Midwest / Stolen SUPs - Sweetwater SUP Challenge

Had a good time at the race until we woke up Sunday morning to find that we had 4 boards and 2 paddles stolen off our trailer at The Boulevard Inn in St., Joseph. Here is a pic of the boards. Please keep an eye out for them in your area. We traveled up from Cleveland for the race. Here is a pic of the boards:

• Yellow Nalu 10' - all yellow on bottom with teal "N" logo.
• 9' F-One Manawa - red, black and wood veneer
• 12'6" Coreban Vision Race - white, wood veneer + red, silver and black board bag
• 12'6" Pau Hana Cross fit - Lime green, black & white
• Pau Hana Paddle
• Starboard paddle

Midwest / Sweetwater SUP Challenge - June 15th Benton, MI

We'll have a contingent of Cleveland area paddlers at the Sweetwater SUP  race on the 15th in Benton Harbor, MI. We'll be camping at Dune Lake. Who else is going?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / San Elijo/Cardiff May 1-7

Hello left coasters. Great Lakers are doing our annual California Classic May 1-7 at San Elijo State Park. Looks like we'll have a little something coming our way too. We'll be doing a little Hawaiian cookout at the campsites on Saturday and welcome any zoners. There will be a number of surfers and the SUP minorities, including myself, who are Great Lakers transplanted to your area or those that make the annual trek.

With Cardiff reef and Elijo being home base we're thinking of hitting Dog Patch early Thursday morning. After that, who knows. I know Kneecap reached out last year and unfortunately we couldn't hook up. I'll be shedding the 6/5/4 stepping down to the sub 10" and maybe this year I'll see some of you in the lineup.

Downwind and Racing / Any Zoners racing Paddle Royale San Juan?

Hope to meet some Zoners. Raced in 2010. Going back this year to race along with my daughters who will race in the Keiki kids races. Jamie from Velauno puts on a great race. He personally called me to see if I was coming. And that is a phone call to "A Skinny Little Boy from Cleveland Ohio". Grateful. We'll be in Rincon the week before for some SUP and SUS.

Heading to the park for a stay in May with a group of seasoned Great Lakes surfers. Most are prone. I figure that since I've heard it can be a friendly vibe, for the most part, I hoped to get some insider's views of the the SUS vibe.

By the way, we are having quite a season across the all the Great Lakes as it has been unseasonably mild and the lakes don't have much ice coverage. Water is still above 32 degrees so we're hoping for open waters for another week or two, or three... We hade beautiful 3' peelers on Lake Erie Friday with snow all around. Heavenly.

Lake Erie, Sunday, August 28. 15-25 N, NE winds, 2-3' waves. Yeah, it's no 'Chopes but the hold downs are as dangerous as that first sip of ginger ale.

Coming in for the Paddle Royal race in San Juan and then heading out to Aguadilla, close to Jobos with my family for a week. Saw the Aquatica Shop web site in Aguadilla. Any good word on the vibe for an intermediate SUP surfer for Jobos or Isabella? Any experiences to share would be appreciated.

Anyone on this forum doing the 8 miler in December? Not sure if I'm doing the 8 around Old San Juan or the weekender 3. I'm traveling down from Cleveland to race and then vacation with the family in Aguadilla. Also looking for some info on SUP friendliness in Aguadilla lineups.
