Review of the long simsup:

"After 20 minutes I was marveling at how stable and well it paddled. With the big center fin there is less tendency for the board to yaw left and right. [...] Paddling out the back from inside the surf line held another unexpected surprise in that the board punches through the incoming waves so smoothly and with such incredible stability. Again, I've never been on a more stable board in this situation."  http://srfnff.blogspot.com/2012/12/l41-tipsup-worlds-first-dedicated-sup.html

It's this punching quality I've been thinking about after surfing an old bing board recently. Can a DW board shaped like the heavy old nose-riders with sharp rails and little nose rocker be a better way to punch upwind and surf DW?

I know there aways discussion of planing v displacement noses, but the old noseriding design seems like it'd be perfect for open ocean swell.  I'm thinking no need bottom turn out there, sharp rails to track, no rocker and heavy board to help catch everything in sight... thoughts?

Gear Talk / Compression Shirts/Sleeves for Body/Joint Support?
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:59:26 PM »
I'm obviously new around the zone, so my apologies if this has been previously discussed. I searched the archives and didn't find anything on point.  The "never stop going" thread got me thinking about taking care of myself.

That said, I've got a question for the cold water zoners.  I've only been in a wetsuit a handfull of times, but it seems to me that the tightness of the suit supports my body in the standing position.

Thoughts on supporting legs/back/joints by wearing compression shirts/sleeves?

I'm in equatorial water and usually wear jerseys for UV protection.  Not a big fan of wearing rash guards.  I'm also increasingly sensitive to protecting my skin from the sun.

Here's a few I've been looking at:

SUP General / Knee pain anyone?
« on: March 09, 2013, 05:20:30 PM »
Aloha StandUp Enthusiasts!

Thought I'd throw a body related question out to the SUP crowd.

MY PROBLEM:
After a session, my left knee (leash leg) is somewhat sore.  Not quite sure how to explain it- no sharp pain, and not really painful at all.  But it bothers me and I do baby it a bit when I walk.  I don't know if this is from the occasional wipeout and board tug on my leg, or the standing/knee bending associated with SUP (particularly SUP surfing).  I've felt it after not wearing a leash, leading me to blame the latter.

PATIENT HISTORY:
I'm 25.  Been an outrigger and surfski paddler for the majority of my life.  First SUPed two years ago and hated it.  Trades are the usual in my neck of the woods, so the upwinders were almost enough for me to swear off the sport.

But then I hit the waves.  At first, I was surprised out how hard it was just to catch 'em.  But I stuck with it, and one day, it became oh so easy. The rest is history and now I'm obsessed.

Anyway, on a good week, I'll get out 3-5 times, usually around 2 hours.  I paddle a mile out to a reef break, have some fun, then downwind it home.  I first used a coiled ankle leash, but the coils drove me insane.  I'm currently using a longboard calf leash.
---------------------------

Anyone experience a similar thing? Suggestions? Knee-jerk reactions?

My fear is doing some kind of lasting harm that could keep me off the water  :-[.

Thanks in advance.
