Gear Talk / Repairing delam under the pad
« on: November 21, 2014, 08:58:31 AM »
Anyone ever repaired a delam that occurred under the pad area.  Board is a standard EPS/Epoxy hand glassed board.

Has anyone ever left it as is and surfed it?  I'm thinking of trying the method that involves drilling some holes and injecting epoxy.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Maui - What area to stay in
« on: September 23, 2013, 10:14:15 PM »
Coming to Maui October 3 for 5 days.  Kind of a last minute trip with my son for his B-day and to take him to a soccer camp that is happening a couple of the days in Kihei.

Any suggestions where/what area to stay?  Was thinking Wailea because it's close, but any other suggestions?  Last time we were over we stayed near Lahaina.

Any suggestions for the other side of the island near like Kanaha or Paia?  3 of the days I have to be in Kihei between 9 and 11 and open the rest of the day, so I'm not adverse to driving to Kihei.

SUP General / Responsibility of those who rent SUPs?
« on: June 10, 2013, 11:55:16 AM »
Do/should the shops and outfits that rent SUPs to the incompetent, inexperienced and generally clueless have any responsibility?

After watching the video below yesterday, I was treated to a similar dangerous scenario this morning.  Two clowns from another country probably on holiday creating a hazard out in a crowded lineup.  The dumber of the two didn't have a leash on his 11 footer.  I told him he didn't have a leash, he was dangerous and should get out of the water.  His only response was "I know."  He then proceeded to knee paddle out through the lineup and was just dangerous enough to catch waves, have a yardsale and shoot his board, which then bounced through the surf until it washed up on shore.

This is wrong on a number of levels and it seems board renters should not be able to absolve themselves of liability when the inevitable happens, but I am sure they can present a liability waiver to the lucky renter to avoid responsibility.

Your thoughts.

Gear Talk / Hypothetical Question re Stability
« on: May 22, 2013, 04:58:24 PM »
Assume you have a short surf sup say around 7'11 x 30 and 120-125 liters and it's borderline stable for the rider.  If the volume was kept the same and the board was stretched out by a foot but the width stayed the same, do you think there would be a significant or only marginal gain in stability?

Gear Talk / AST construction - What is it?
« on: May 17, 2013, 06:01:18 PM »
Lots of the board mfgs off shore ones have a construction called AST.  Not too many divulge what it is.  Looks like it is nothings nothing more than EPS that is vac bagged or molded with fiberglass only.  Looks to get pvc included you have to get top shelf carbon.  I thiught the sandwich boards all had pvc.

Is this a strong durable build?  Im thinking it is a cheap build.  Thoughts?

Gear Talk / Jamie Mitchell and Nectar quad fins

Anyone used either one of these quad sets from Futures?

What did you think?

Anyone know what type of foil is used on the rears of these fins?

Gear Talk / 9'3" C4 Sub Vector
« on: October 16, 2012, 12:28:44 PM »
How does this board compare to what is available these days?

Most reviews I've read have been favorable other than saying its heavy, especially for bigger people over 200 lbs.  I've always been interested in this board and saw one for very cheap.

Is this a solid board for the over 200 crowd?

Downwind and Racing / Determining Optimal Volume for a Distance/Raceboard
« on: October 16, 2012, 12:25:23 PM »
I wanted to get thoughts/opinions about figuring out optimal volume for a distance/raceboard.

I know what works for me for a board for the surf, but not so sure about a distance board.  Currently, I've got a 17' Naish Glide, which I think is about 321 liters and I'm 100kgs roughly.

If I went down to a 14' board, would I want to keep the volume in that same ball park or is less volume going to work.  I've seen 14' production boards down as low as 230l and the new Fanatic Falcons are 268, 291 and 317L depending on width.

Downwind and Racing / PFD recommendations
« on: December 06, 2011, 07:19:48 PM »
Just read a couple of threads on Seabreeze about PDFs.

What are people using on open ocean/down wind paddles?

I'm interested in something that works as opposed to a half baked attempt to act like I'm complying with(trying to skirt) a coast guard reg.  For example those fanny pack things that you have to put on after the emergency has already occurred.

Anyone ridden one of Strech's SUPs?  Look interesting and wondering how they perform.
