Gear Talk / Best board for new wave rider
« on: July 11, 2014, 05:29:02 PM »
I have been paddling a 12 - 6 flat water board for two seasons now.  I'm currently using a Lakeshore Sunset Cruiser, 12 -6 by 29 inches, to sometimes work out on and sometimes just relax on.   I paddle large and small lakes, as well as the inland waters of the Pacific Northwest, now known as the Salish Sea.  With my wife's impending retirement, I am planning some trips to SoCal and to the Texas Gulf Coast.  Being a river kayaker as well, I might even make a few stops at a few white water parks, such as Boise or Charlotte.

I was thinking of getting a planing hull board, mostly for the coast, thinking that I could learn to surf some small to medium waves. I weigh 170, but my target weight is 165. The thought of a board any wider than 30 inches kinda puts me off, but I am wondering if I need to go a little wider with my weight, perhaps a 10-6 or 11 foot by 30 or 32. Possibly even inflatable for the purpose of travel, but I don't want to confuse the issue too much. Also, a board that could do some light touring on flat water, or multi purpose and, might be handy if that's possible. Who has some thoughts on a board , or at least the right size board for myself for these purposes.

Gear Talk / New fin recommendations
« on: August 12, 2013, 09:48:05 PM »
The glass fin on my Boardworks Raven 12-6 has a couple big chips in it from my carelessness.  Wouldn't mind a carbon fin, for use in flat water training.  Board is 30 inches wide, displacement hull.  Any suggestions/recommendations?

Gear Talk / Stacking boards with pool noodles
« on: July 18, 2013, 06:42:53 PM »
My Wife and I have Boardworks Ravens, hers a 10-6 mine a 12-6.  Given the displacement hull shapes they just didn't stack very well.  I was bagging my board then loading hers on top.  For shorter trips, I got some small diameter pool noodles and cut two of them the width of my board at the tie down points, then I threaded some Thule straps thru the noodles.  Now when stacking, I load my board and tie it down with the pool noodles on top, then I load her board on top and strap in on with two additional straps.  Seems to work well, a $4 fix.

Gear Talk / Bark Dominator
« on: July 02, 2013, 05:23:08 PM »
I just read the thread started by NC Coastal Glide, getting a Bark dOminator at age 65.  Lots of replies of encouragement to him, incl mine. Have a board question though.  I went to the bark website to look at the Dominator.  I expected it to be a 14 foot by super skinny racer.  I see they come in widths from 26 to 30.  But all the posts rave on the board, but no one,  incl NCCG, mention the width of the board.  Am I missing something?
