Last night I did my first dwd race on the wing-foil. It was great fun but racing downwind using a wing is a bit of an oxymoron.... Racing is about completing the course in the shortest possible time and going dwd is all about riding the bumps, linking them and using the energy of the ocean as much as possible. Throw in a wing and you can sheet in and race through the bumps - basically changing the feeling from surfing to yachting. On a foil with no wing it's an art to go fast - a wing kind of takes that away as the most fun is to try and flag out the wing and just stay with the bumps which means the guy in yachting mode will invariably go faster..... Our Wednesday night Downwind Dash is open to all craft so we have Sups, Surfskis, Prone, Foil, Wing-foil and even 14ft SUP with a wing. It's an institution in Cape Town and great fun https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=208254

Apparently our local water administrators are considering banning wings without windows.
As I see it virtually all craft with sails have blind angles, it's always the responsibility of the operator to check where he is going.
On a wing all it requires is the occasional lift of wing to check whereabouts of other downwind watercraft and obstacles. Upwind, straight ahead and 10-15deg downwind are un-obstructed.
Windows in wings serve no function whatsoever, other than adding weight and cost.

I certainly hope so - it was spectacular to watch the live drone footage from Ocean Paddler TV with Travis Grant commentating.
But, it's called the Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard World Championship and as Grant noted at one point:" They don't seem to be using their paddle much...."
I believe there has already been some mutterings from the prone paddlers about the suitability of fois in this race and the 2hr delayed start was possible done to try and deny the foils stealing all the thunder.
But steal it they did, with blistering pace, surfing and pumping their way across the channel......paddle in hand.

How big are the Maliko 200 and 280 in cm2? 280 square inches is 1806cm2 but that doesn't add up to the 1800cm2 wings that I've seen. Is he using square feet in which case 2.8sq.ft would be 2600cm2 which sounds more plausible.
And are the quoted sizes correct in whatever denomination they may be?
Does anyone know?

Chris crossed False Bay 47km in 4h50min today as the first to do this on a SUP. Chris did it solo, unassisted in preparation for his 24hour record which he is hoping to clinch in the next 4 weeks. False Bay is home to Seal Island and the breaching Great Whites of Nat Geo fame so hats off to Chris for tickling the lions balls and giving it a go! Aired in 171 countries on his XLTV programme - happy to live in Cape Town - this place is built for downwinding - we've got our weekly Wed night race tonight and it has been blowing 30knots+ last 4 days and it's not supposed to let up until the weekend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L655S1y5Hw&feature=youtu.be

We have a kid that's been suping for a few years - he is now 10 and 1/2 yo and he is lighting up our time-trials.
He is now averaging around 8.5km/h (5.28mph) on our 1.5km and 1.9km TT's and about 8.2km/h (5.09mph) on the 3km circuit.
He only weighs 31kgs and he's had a board specially made for him - it's a 10'9 x 19" scaled down version of the Coreban Phoenix. The board looks about right for him although he buries the nose a little when he puts his weight forward, so perhaps board is not 100% ideal for his weight - but looking at his times, I'd say its pretty impressive.
His name is Cameron Tripney - and he is amping for suping!
I'd be keen to hear if there are any other kids around that age managing similar speeds (none of our other kids can keep up with him)
