SUP General / Sharktober.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KRON) –  The big ones are here.

The Monterey Bay is home to great white sharks year-round. But the largest migrating sharks — some as huge as 17-feet-long — show up each year in October.

Locals and shark experts refer to October as “Sharktober.”

“I found my biggest yet for 2019…a whopping 17 feet!” wrote wildlife photographer Eric Mailander. “(I) could easily tell size by the 8-foot dolphins that swam nearby. Later I found another whopper of about 15 feet.”Mailander helps Monterey Bay Aquarium shark scientists track shark populations along the Central California coastline.

While observing behaviors with his drone, he sees the stealthy ocean predators glide under boogie boarders, surfers, and stand-up paddle boarders. No one ever notices what is just below the surface, Mailander said.

SUP General / How much is too much?

Very windy here today. I hate it on a stand up.

How much wind is too much for you?

I picked this up this morning, just in time for the new south swell filling in.

9'3"x33" @160 liters. With those numbers, I call it a SimSup with extra cheese. It has very foiled out rails and a nice thin tail. Surfed some great waves on its very first day in the water. It hardly ever happens that way.

SUP General / Ten foot and over!

Anybody surfing a 10 foot or longer stand up board out there?

Lately, it seems like all the attention has gone to micro sized boards the barely float.

I've been watching some videos to remind me why I started stand up in the first place... to have fun.

SUP General / They're back.
« on: May 08, 2018, 06:54:34 PM »
After a few months without any visible great whites in our area they seem to be back.... and bigger than last year.

Yesterday, they spotted 15 sharks in a 30 minute period all between 10 to 14 feet.

Then today, this is downright scary. All these shots are from Seacliff Beach and the Cement Ship, just a short paddle away from the L41.

I woke up to a rainbow right on the L41 on this morning's surf cam.

There were some fine lucky charms to be had.

SUP General / Sink to win.

Ever year I drive across town and watch the Paddlefest contest at Steamer Lane. One thing is glaring obvious. SUP surfers that advance in heats are for the most part, nimble, young and surfing boards that barely float them.

I can’t take anything away from these incredible athletes, but it doesn’t resemble stand up paddling I see around here for the rest of the year.

Wouldn’t it be cool if they had a 10 foot and over class? I think it would give a needed dose of reality to surf contests.

What do you think?
