Training, Diet, and Fitness / Max Heart Rate
« on: June 23, 2019, 07:51:56 PM »
Finding the formula for max heart rate is easy.
I don't see how that can so easily be applied across the board.
Because I have high blood pressure, I take my reading daily at various times of the day.  My average resting heart rate is 56.
Using 200-70, my max rate should be 150.
This doesn't seem possible.
Is there any other more personalized method of figuring max heart rate?

Random / Cataract Surgery
« on: September 22, 2018, 08:29:18 PM »
Cataract surgery seems to be in my near future.  The Dr. told me i may not be able to pass the next eye exam.  I also have some sun damage on both eyes, which can be dealt with at the same time.
What is your experience with this surgery?

SUP General / pfd ***UPDATE*** California style
« on: February 05, 2018, 03:18:25 PM »
I got stopped again this morning by the same Sheriff as last time.
Thanks to all of you and the manufacture of the pfd I have, I'm smarter now.  So, I quoted the Code of Federal Regulation 175.15, that says my type III
inflatable can be carried on the board.  We had a brief discussion and then they left.  A few minutes later, they came back.  He showed me a booklet "ABCs of California Boating".
Oh Oh.  When I asked if their office carried the booklet he gave his copy to me.
Here it is:
"California boating law requires that all Type I, II and III lifejackets must be readily accessible...."   And then "Note:  An inflatable life jacket must be worn to be considered readily accessible."
I'll start wearing mine.

Gear Talk / U. S. Coast Guard pfd regulations
« on: January 19, 2018, 09:02:48 PM »
About a month ago, an Orange County Harbor Patrol Sheriff stopped me for a pfd violation.  I had a Type III inflatable attached to my board.  There is a stamp clearly stating that this pfd can be worn or carried.  And I showed that to him.  He stated that carried meant carried on the person.
I know that is wrong, but I don't know the exact code or wording, so I put it on.  When I got home, I called the pfd manufacturer.  The lady explained that all Type III's foam or inflatable can be carried on the board.  Ever since, I've gone back to caring it on my board.  Of course, now that I'm a little smarter, I haven't seen him.
What is the exact wording regarding Type III pfd's and the code number?  I haven't found it.

Random / Navy retired
« on: January 08, 2018, 11:47:17 AM »
My dad was in the Navy during WWII.  My son is a SFC in the Army.
His wife wants to make something, including a picture of my dad in uniform.
I don’t have any of those pictures.
How can I get one from the Navy?

SUP General / Tar
« on: August 11, 2017, 08:39:56 PM »
Yes Tar.  Today I paddled out to the entrance of Newport and then in the bay some.  Afterwards when I turned my board upside down, there was a glob of tar on the leading edge my fin.  It was about 4 inches long.
I've stepped in some tar and put a spot on my board.  But, this is the first time I ever had any stuck to my fin.

What are the pros and cons of polarized lenses when supping?

SUP General / Mavericks surf contest organizers file for bankruptcy

This was just on the evening news in Southern California.  It seems that the contest can't go on at this time.

Technique / Lower hand position
« on: October 20, 2016, 11:50:18 AM »
When I first started, I learned to hold the paddle shaft by my fingers.  Picture the lower hand in a "C" shape, as in hanging from a pull up bar.
Someone recently told me to have the paddle shaft more in my palm.
What is the current thinking on this?

SUP General / Is that Motorized?
« on: September 12, 2016, 01:03:59 PM »
I stopped after paddling in a strip mall to get coffee.  The center has a security person on duty, because people like to use the lot for beach parking.  The security guy asks me if my SUP is motorized.  I replied that is is manual.

Classifieds / Looking for used paddle
« on: June 17, 2016, 10:22:30 PM »
One of my wife's co-workers won a SUP.  She wants to give it a try.  But, she isn't sure she'll like it.  She is looking for a beat up inexpensive paddle.  She is probably 5' 5".
My retail suggestions were shot down.  I didn't find any thing online.  So, I'm asking here.

SUP General / Ankle leash fastened to pfd questions
« on: June 15, 2016, 02:10:26 PM »
At the last BOP, some of the paddlers strapped their ankle leashes to their fanny pack pfds.
I mentioned this to a friend that is paddling from Catalina to Cabrillo this weekend.  She was at a race recently in Malibu.  On of the ladies had fastened her leash to her waist pack.  When she fell off her board the wind caught her board.  She was being dragged and wanted to release the leash, and just swim in to shore.  But, she couldn't reach the strap and really struggled to get air.
Has the practice of strapping ankle leashes to pfds., mostly been discontinued?

Random / Bad Knees. Will This help?
« on: May 01, 2016, 04:16:54 PM »
Several people on here report having knee problems.  The reason for these problems vary.
In my case I don't have ankle strength.  So, my knee is doing all the work, when the water gets mixed up.
Would wearing a neoprene knee brace give enough support to make a difference?
Would a knee brace cause problems some where else?

SUP General / Soft Racks and Rental Car
« on: December 28, 2015, 01:27:20 PM »
I used soft racks for almost two years on my Chevy Colorado without any noise problems from the straps when flat.  I had two different boards during this time.
This summer we sold the truck and bought a MB GLK350.  I installed hard racks.  All was good.  Then last Monday a 1968 Cadillac, with the steel bumper and pointy front end rear ended us.  It actually put a hole in the lift gate.
Today, I put soft racks on the rental car and headed out.  I only got to about 35 mph, before the noise started.
ALL THE NOISE COMPLAINTS MAKE SENSE NOW.
