General Discussion / SUP adirondack chairs - recycled Focus Rawson
« on: August 05, 2020, 08:44:07 AM »
Ok Folks here is round 2, you saw how awesome the Kings Crocodile chair came out and I had this 8'4 Focus laying around with some leaking fin boxes that had already been repaired too many times to admit, so why not make the board into a pair of matching chairs to go along with the crocodile. Plus doing this freed up space for a brand new 8'2 Infinity Round Nose Blurr (thanks Kayadogg).

General Discussion / SUP adirondack chair - recycled Kings Board
« on: July 16, 2020, 05:36:20 PM »
Board began life as one of Dave Daum (King's Paddle Sports owner and board shaper) favorite long board style custom SUP called the Crocodile board. After Dave made a cross country trip, which included a stop in New England and a visit to the famous Cape Cod Pump House Surf Shop, Owner and surfer extraordinaire Matt River got hold of the board, it soon transferred ownership from Dave and quickly became Matt's favorite SUP. Matt enjoyed countless sessions and waves up and down the Cape until after a typical day of Cape Cod close outs the board had it's tragic end and was toast, left essentially unrepairable. This was a beautiful 10ft hand shaped custom SUP weighing around 10 pounds that saw tons of east coast and west coast waves, but what to do with it now....Matt stored it at his shop until I saw a really cool Adirondack chair made out of Hockey sticks and thought...hmmmm …I had an idea and called Matt ….asked about getting my hands on the famous board and the rest is history !!

Here's a few pics...Matt ripping it up in a sweet Cape Cod barrel and then Matt holding the board all ripped up. Then a little over a year later....my new Crocodile chair ….now loved and used again daily!!!

Selling boards to reduce quiver and make room for new board.

8’10” x 31” x 4.2” 125.5L Kings Laser Custom – High Performance Surf SUP $750

I had this board custom made in 2017 by Dave Daum at Kings Paddleboard in Ca, was over $2000 new, designed for New England sloppy surf conditions, short enough for sporty fun yet wide enough for stability. This board took my SUP Surfing to a new level quickly. Board is in excellent shape, with minimal paddle scratches and 1 small pressure mark. Board is ultra-light and fast.

PERFORMANCE: The Laser is designed to be easy to ride for high level beginners through expert level SUP surfers. This board gives you solid stability with maximum maneuverability. The Laser is well suited to waves heights from 1' to 10' making it a highly versatile choice. The Laser likes to be ridden from the tail with one foot on the stomp pad and the other foot just behind the center of the board, likes to be ridden fast and down the line, allows you to make hard snaps and reentries and to make super tight cutbacks without losing speed. The Laser works fantastic in mushy as well as steep hollow waves.
THE SHAPE: The design is created using state of the art 3D CAD software. The Laser has medium high nose rocker which helps prevent the nose from pearling on late drops. It has high tail rocker allowing very loose turns. The bottom of the Laser has a single full length concave that feathers out into a slight V running of the back of the tail. The concave gives you high lift and high speed. The rails are, like all King's Boards, super thin allowing you to penetrate the face of the wave for control and maneuverability. King's rails are not chunky and square like all other brands! The deck is fairly flat for comfort. The OEM deck pad is diamond cross cut with a kick-block and arch bar.
CONSTRUCTION:   Comes with four FCS II side fin boxes and a 10-1/2" long center fin box. The board includes FCS II fins. The bottom of the board is laminated with epoxy resin and 3 layers of 4oz fiberglass cloth which wraps around the rails onto the deck.  The deck of the board is laminated with epoxy resin and 3 layers of 4oz fiberglass cloth and a foot patch of 6 oz fiberglass cloth. The fiberglass lamination which wraps around the rails onto the bottom. This gives you 24 oz of fiberglass on the rails for protection against dings.  Rails also protected is RsPro Rail saver Tape. The top and bottom are finished using epoxy resin.

8’x4” x 29.25”x 4.25” 117L Focus Rawson – Carbon High Performance Surf SUP $350

Board is from 2014 but is still in good condition, has some paddle wear and tear and repaired fin boxes, great board if looking to step down to a short board style sup for serious wave riding. The tough construction of this board makes it durable yet very light and fast.

CONSTRUCTION: Boards are constructed with the Focus ACT tech.  The ACT uses a combination of  Carbon Fiber, Epoxy, fiberglass, and bamboo to make some of the strongest and lightest SUPs on the market. Comes with 2 side bite fins and 2 honeycomb Focus Fins.
PRO REVIEW: I ran this thing in a quad and loved the drive down the line, the easy engagement of the rails off the bottom and the smooth transfer off the top. It’s one of those boards that doesn’t feel entirely displaced from your regular shortboard but still allows you to paddle in relative comfort. I really liked the tail too, which was very responsive but still wide enough to provide stability waiting for waves.

Located in Southeastern Ma, will not ship, will drive within reason to meet.

SUP General / Why the zone has gone south
« on: August 19, 2018, 11:05:54 AM »
So I used to love love love the Stand Up Zone, lots of great conversations about boards, about paddling, tips and great advice, then came the jokers and folks that posted irrelevant posts just because they thought they where funny or wanted to see their post count go up or felt they had so share their own agendas or self promotion and egos. Now it’s become politics, options, and negative discussions and many zoners ..like most of america ...now easily have their feeling hurt and can’t seem to get along. It’s really too bad as I’ve made lots of friends from the Zone, some of your biggest Zoners I’ve had the pleasure of paddling with, surfed with them, hung out with their families and although sometimes we have differences of opinions, it never gets personal. I always loved the classifieds and Admin brought it back to it’s full glory. The new stuff about foils and even non paddling stuff can even be a good read (like pono’s camper overhaul), but then you read someone’s post and it goes south and you question why, what happended, who are these zoners... surly not someone I’d paddle with or even waste time trying to talk to. Sad thing is I’m not the only one with this opinion or feels this way and this awesome place is getting ruined.

I’ve made my share of posts calling people out when I’ve read dumb comments or posts and now its gone to another level as shown by a zoner using his signature as a quote from me from a long time ago when my post hurt his feelings....

I think it was my reaction when you scolded me and another forum member on my humorous post about new Infinity models and you went on a rant about ppl posting useless crap etc. And I found it funny when someone tried to be the internet police on public forums.

Kirill

Why???? Maybe times are chaging on the zone, maybe we need the admin to weed out the “junk”, hell, maybe its just me. I’m sure the Admin might pull this thread down and I mean it as nothing against the zone but rather where some of the conversations have gone and are still going... it’s too bad... used to log on and read the zone more than facebook or even the surf forecasts. I hope the zone goes back to what it was and what it can truely be, a place for paddlers to share and exchange experiences, discussions, thoughts and ideas, and wverything all around stand up.

To my zoners I call family and friends, see you at the beach, at a race, or when we get together to talk SUP, remember the stoke and good vibes and forget the downers and jokers.

Gear Talk / Quickblade P40 EVA Wrappped Handle into a KeNalu Shaft ?
« on: March 31, 2017, 02:50:34 AM »
Anyone know if a Quickblade P40 EVA Wrapped Handle would fit into a Xtuf KeNalu shaft ?

Training for another CCBC and after 20 miles the Quickblade Wrapped soft handle from my first QB paddle was so much easier on my hands, I'd love to have that handle in my KeNalu Mana 82 paddle w Xtuf Shaft. Seems like it would be my perfect set up for long distance paddling but not sure I want to spend the $40 for that QB handle for a trial and error situation. Also anyone know if the hot glue would work on the QB EVA handle, as I am pretty sure the QBs are usually put together with appoxy and I would not was to use that on the KeNalu.

Gear Talk / Nice Tail !!! What's your favorite ?
« on: October 27, 2016, 07:47:13 AM »
As SUP surfing has changed over the years, board design has gone from huge and wide, to short and narrow, and a variety  in between. One of the evolutions in design has been the ever changing preference of tail design. Different conditions might call for a different board with a different tail, but what is the best design or is there even one?

Here are a few from my quiver: Diamond, Round, Swallow, Unique (as Pat Rawson calls it):

SUP General / Best way to handle a Goon in the lineup ????
« on: September 16, 2016, 09:01:41 AM »
Hey Zoners,

About a week ago I was surfing in Newport RI at 1st beach during the fun swell we had from Hurricane Gustave and had the unpleasant run in with the local Sup/Surf Town Goon. Picture your typical out of prison felon, big guy both in size and weight, with a typical arian skinhead type mentality. So this guy is on his SUP and literally dropping in on everyone (Proners and SUPs) but because he's a Goon, nobody says anything.

So now it's my turn, great wave, I am way outside, clear path in front for my paddle take off, and here comes the Goon, paddling as hard as he can cutting me off, so he doesn't catch the wave and neither do I as I had to bail into the water or hit him, so I let that one go, maybe he didn't see me, here we go again, he does it 2 more times and now I have had it. I paddle back out and yell at him, why you keep cutting me off, he then yells back at me that I'm catching too many waves....what ???

Seriously...so next wave again he tries cutting me off again, this time I ain't backing off and I charge at him, catch the wave, slash and spray him, he falls off his board and all I hear is laughing and cheers from the lineup. Ok that that was fun, but now the Goon is pissed off, I made an enemy and he's going to be out to get me, you could see the road rage in his eyes and smoke blowing off his cromag head.

Out I paddle, here he comes ready to drop in on me again, this time I stop paddling and yell at a buddy Jeff (not sure of his zoner name) I yell Hey I'm going to let him get that wave as I don't cut people off. Now I yelled it loud enough that Jeff was laughing and the Goon yells F**k You to me so I yell back Assh**e to him.

Next few waves I figure I have had enough and this guy is killing the vibe and stoke so I paddle further down the beach and snake a few more waves before heading in 9I was already out for 4 hours and getting tired). Right before I do this I see him drop in on another SUP and run straight into a proner already on the wave. So clearly this Goon is just a jerk and ruining the day for everyone near him.

Once on the beach I'm talking with other guys both proners and sups here he comes, The Goon walks around my car and starts taking pictures of me while I was putting my board on my car but won't come over to me (probably because I wasn't alone and had a folks around). He clearly makes himself visible so I know he's taking pictures of me (my car and boards on the rack) and now I am being stalked.

A couple days go by, I am back at same break only now waves aren't as nice so less crowded and windy as hell, just as I am ready to leave, here is the Goon standing in the middle of the road (near the beach parking attendant booth) wearing long jeans, biker boots, and just a leather vest (Clearly a wanna be biker gang MC member or trying out for the Village People), before I drive away out I always chat with the parking attendant and it just so happens that today there is the local LEO hanging at the booth. Of course the Goon sees me talking to them and doesn't say anything but makes sure I see him, he then just walks up the road as I drove away turning back staring at me with looks that kill.

Haven't seen him the last couple times I was there (including today), but I know he's a regular in Newport as another SUP guy told me he see's him at the gym all the time and he's a total pecker-head there as well.

My question to you the Zoner community, how should I deal with this guy next time? Should I try and make peace or just ignore him until he approaches or confronts me? I have to be honest he is clearly a bully and is hell bent on making my life miserable....so I guess I will change his name from the Goon to the Drop in Terrorist.
