So obviously putting a teflon or other slippery coating on your race board is fast, but what about the paddle? Does it make any sense to coat a paddle?
I have no engineering background at all so this is probably a dumb question. My uneducated thought is that, no, you do not want to make your paddle blade more slippery. Any advantage you would get in sliding the paddle in and out of the water would be lost when you are powering through the stroke as the paddle would be more included to feather side-to-side. Do I have that basically right? Does anyone apply coatings to their paddle blades?

I’m a little surprised there is no mention here of the Hanohano race in San Diego that took place yesterday. It was an amazing event – and that is coming from someone who is terrible at racing (I’m awful). I did no training whatsoever and finished quite deep in the standings, but from a purely participation perspective, it was a great race. I would encourage anyone within driving distance of San Diego to participate next year.
Anyone else do it?

I am going to be in Eastern CT / Western RI in another week (Mystic, CT to be exact) the last week of July. Anyone know of shops out there where I can rent some boards for a week? Nothing fancy, I don’t need to surf or race; just tool around.

Is it me, or do they seem to be EVERYWHERE?! Maybe us SUPers see so many because we stand above the water and can look down, but I am seeing so many dozens of stingrays every time I got surfing, I can’t believe the proners (or dogs or kids) aren’t getting hit constantly. It is just a matter of time before I step on one (yes I shuffle my feet)
Is it one of those things where they have always been there but the strikes are somehow still rare? Given how many I see from my board, I can’t believe the strikes aren’t more common than they are.

What are the Zoners' opinions about stomp pads on race boards?
Does it make sense to have a stomp pad so you know where to plant your foot for buoy turns? Obviously, they make sense for "in and out" type racing where you surf in, and you see them a lot on 12'6" boards, but are they a good idea for other types of racing too?
I'm considering putting a stomp pad on my 14' race board so I can step back with a little more confidence, but before I sand down my board to apply it, I wanted to hear other people's opinions. Thanks.

My Starboard AST Race 12'6" arrived yesterday. I was at work so my girlfriend accepted the shipment. I told her to take the board out and look at it before accepting the shipment, but she accepted the board with this crease spanning the width on the bottom. What do I do?
Reject the shipment after the fact? Send it back? Fix it and send UPS the bill (that is the option I want to take because I’d like to keep the board). How big a deal is this going to be?
Any thoughts or advice would be most appreciated.

I have a really dumb question that probably answers itself, but here goes:
Standard roof rack pads are 24" but most boards (including mine) are wider than that.
I'm pretty sure I want to travel with my race board upside down but with the sunken deck, that means the rails may not be resting on the pads. The answer is two sets of pads, right? Do they make 28" pads?

Ok, quick story/write-up/question:
I’ve been in a total of three races. The first two shouldn’t count because I was on my old 2007 12' Laird and just participating for fun. I recently entered a race on my “new” (I bought it used) full-carbon King’s 14' race board. I trained a little bit and wore a heart monitor during the race.
From my first two races, and from watching videos of races, I’ve learned that the start is critical. At the start, I sprinted to my board, threw it in the water, hopped on, choked down on my paddle and dug in like a maniac. First two photos are taken a few moments after the start when I am arguably in first place (I’m the guy in the white shirt, grey shorts, yellow board).
Nice, right? At least it was nice until the whole fleet passed me.
My heart rate jumped straight up into the 90's and stayed there for the whole race. Several times my heart rate was 100% or higher. It was a short race (30 minutes) and I was going hard the whole time. Heart rate averaged 96% for the race.
So how/why did everyone pass me? And it wasn’t even close, by the way. I was 5-6 minutes behind the winners (HUGE for such a short race). Once guy went by me like I was standing still. Last shot is me turning myself inside-out to get around the guy in the darker shirt (on a very nice, but well-aged Infinity board).
No dice, he finished just ahead of me.
This sounds like I am bitter, but I’m not. I had a great time and I cannot wait for my next race. I am not giving up. I just am hoping that I can cover more ground faster next time. I just have no idea how to make that happen. What areas should I focus on? Fitness, the board, my technique, or the paddle?
It seems impossible to put more effort in as my heart was maxing out as it was. Am I so out of shape that going at 96% of my max heart rate for 30 minutes puts me that far off the pace? Can an 18 month old carbon race board built for a guy my same weight be that uncompetitive? Is my paddle blade too small? I use a Yolo EJ performance paddle blade (90 sq. inches). EJ does just fine with the same blade in his races, but maybe he has a higher cadence than I do. I’ve been paddling for a while so I think my form is pretty decent but maybe I need a stroke overhaul.
I am looking forward to cracking the code. My guess is the problem is with my fitness level.

What should my heart rate percentage be for a short-ish race of about 2.5 miles? That’s about 30 minutes of paddling. If I wear a heart rate monitor, can I let my heart rate stay at 90% or above for the whole race? Should I force myself to spend some time in the 80's? I just bought a heart rate monitor and I can’t believe how quickly my heart rate goes to max when I am training.

So I was in a van from the airport headed to a ski area in Utah and by pure chance, my two favorite SUPers were in the row ahead of me: Candice and Anthony. They are very cool in person.

Wasn't Cox making a television show about this year's California Battle of the Paddle? Does anyone know what happened to that?

I was looking at the Battle of the Paddle results and trying to line up the top finishes with their equipment.
In the Distance Race:
1: Rob Rojas Ohana (unlimited) 2: Danny Ching 404 (14) 3. Chuck Glynn unknown (unlimited) (I couldn’t figure out what board he rides) 4. Kai Lenny Naish (14) 5. Kody Kerbox Naish (14) 6. Slater Trout Infinity (14) 7. Eric Terrein Starboard (14) 8. Jamie Mitchell Bark? (14) 9. Mo Freitas Naish? (14) (he rides a Naish, right?) 10. Noa Ginella Naish (14)
It appears that four of the top eight 14' race boards were built by Naish. No one else had two boards in the top 10. Am I reading too much into these results?

I have a really dumb fiberglass question. My oldest board is starting to give off fiberglass splinters. There is no visible sign of damage, just after effects of fiberglass splinters. What is the fix? Just a can of clear coat spray, or what?

I'm 6'4" and 200 and have been paddling for about 4 years. I have an old "fun" board, a surf-specific board and now it's time to step up and get a race board. I like the beach start type races (BOP style, but I am not getting a 12'6"), so getting in and out of the surf is somewhat important.
I've narrowed it down to the following:
M&M 14: I demoed the 12'6" over the weekend and loved it. This is a great board and I had no problems with stability. I imagine the 14 will be more of the same, but faster.
Infinity 14: Do I go with the Whiplash? Ocean Racer? The Dart? The web site doesn't give any specs on the boards so it is impossible to tell how wide they are or how much volume they have.
Yolo Prowler 14: I have not tried one, but they seem like good boards but even more narrow than the M&M which is pretty narrow. Do I go with the wide? The narrow? I don't think stability will be a problem, but I've heard that 200 pounders like myself go faster on a wider board regardless of stability concerns.
Any thoughts on any of these boards and which direction I should go?

I picked up a 9'4" Hobie CM (Colin McPhillips). What is the word on these things? The "floatation disk" doesn't seem exist on the newer Hobies. Should I be worried about that?
