General Discussion / JL Destroyer fin setup
« on: July 18, 2023, 11:45:47 AM »
Hi, looking to understand what fin setup's folks are using on the 8'5 Destroyer.

The front boxes are 16" up from the tail, so that suggests they are aimed more at  a 2+1 setup?   It also means the distance between the front and back quad boxes is quite long, so I'm thinking it may not turn so well in Quad setup?

Stuck waiting for waves so not able to do any meaningful testing.  Any input gratefully received.  Thanks.

Hi,
I'm going to be visiting the Raleigh NC area a few weekends between now and the end of the year.  Can anyone recommend good rental locations nearby or on the coast. I'm experienced at Flatwater and Surf SUP.

Also starting to get into WingFoiling if you can recommend somewhere that gives lessons.

Thanks in advance.

Wingsurfing, Windfoiling, Wingfoiling, Wing SUP / Wing care / cleaning
« on: October 17, 2021, 03:15:42 AM »
Just bought a used wing.  Condition is great, but it's obviously been put-away wet and it stinks, seems like it's inside the struts that is the problem.  Any ideas what to wash it with, I know chlorine-based products are a big NO.   Thanks.

Gear Talk / JL Black Blue noserider

I'm looking at a 9'9 BB.  I can find plenty of info on the smaller and bigger models, but not much on the 9'9.  Has anyone ridden one?   It sounds like the 9'6 can be challenging to ride, and the 10'1 gets great reviews, but what about the 9'9?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / JL Striker
« on: June 23, 2018, 10:17:42 AM »
It usually takes about 12 months before I start finding “reasons” to change a board.   However my current surf sup is bucking that trend - it does everything I need, it does everything the brochure says, and it is superbly made – my Jimmy Lewis 9’5 Striker.

I’ve had it well over a year now and have experimented with different fins in different conditions, 1-6 feet.   Best setup so far is standard JL sides with a 7” cutaway.   The board catches waves so easily, is very loose off the tail, likes to be ridden way up front and is so smooooth.

What I don’t understand is why the Striker isn’t talked about more, all the hype seems to be around other JL models like the SuperFrank.   Maybe they are better for their more-specific purposes, but for a one-board quiver the Striker gets my vote.   Anyone else riding a Striker, how do you find it?

PS.   I have no affiliation with JL.

SUP General / Strap handle
« on: November 21, 2017, 12:09:12 PM »
I have a surf sup with the FCS handle.  Not really enjoying carrying the board as the handle doesn't have much of a ledge, also its off the balance point.

So I'm thinking of adding a strap type handle.  Not sure I like the idea of using sticky pads(?) so has anyone tried fitting two leash plugs and running a strap between those?  Thanks.

Hi, anyone using the Mission SmartWatch, I've read mixed reviews about battery life when using the GPS.   Any experience of this please?

SUP General / Leaking board, advice needed
« on: July 08, 2017, 04:48:45 AM »
Hi,
Today after paddling i thought I'd check the goretex valve was working ok so I covered it with water and watched for bubbles.    I saw bubbles, but they are coming from where the body of the vent hole assembly meets the top skin of the board!  :(

No way i can get some resin in there, and I'm wondering what's best.

a) Do I actually need a vent (I live where a hot day is 20c, 25c max), Maybe I just seal it up.
b) Do I dig out the vent body and glass in a new one?

Board is an NSP DC raceboard, and I think I read somewhere the foam in those doesn't take on water?

Any advice greatly appreciated thanks.  (The board does not seem to have gained any weight, )

Gear Talk / Leashes
« on: April 10, 2017, 12:02:20 PM »
Looking to replace my leash.

With sups being big boards I go for the strongest I can find.  Currently using a Creatures of Leisure Outer Reef but the ankle strap is a bit short.  Over a 5mm wetsuit and 5mm boots there isn't much overlap on the Velcro.  What works well?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / JL Striker

Looking at the JL Striker as my next board, either the 9’5 or the 10.
Anyone ridden both, how do they compare?
what do the boards weigh?

I’m also interested in how they noseride, the JL website says “Low nose rocker for occasional nose riding”.   What’s occasional nose-riding, does it or doesn’t it?  Anyone tried it out with a big single fin?

Thanks.

Gear Talk / Gloves or Mits
« on: November 26, 2016, 04:47:55 AM »
Hi, Winter is well and truly here.  Looking for new 5mm Gloves for sup-surfing.

Some manufacturers are also doing Mits.

Some Mits have an index finger, others are just a thumb and the main part.   Anyone tried either, could you grip the paddle ok?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Centre fin pin.
« on: August 31, 2016, 12:24:46 PM »
I've found a cutaway fin that works great in my board but the pin thru the rear is almost level with the entry slot in the finbox.

I really want to use this fin and I had the idea of shortening the mount to get round this, but it would end up being only about 3" long.  Or I try to lengthen the mount instead.   Anyone ever had this issue, how did you resolve it?   thanks.

Technique / Upwind advice
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:10:02 PM »
Hi, I just had to paddle 2 miles to a beach with the wind and chop coming from 30 or 45 degrees.  Probably the least enjoyable paddle I have had.  Any advice on how to deal with this, is it best to take the pain and mostly paddle on one side, or  head straight upwind then across the chop at 90 degrees to get in?  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Sunova Style v Style XL
« on: February 17, 2016, 12:11:18 PM »
Hi, looking at the 10'6 Style as a classic longboard/noserider style SUP.   Has anyone ridden the 10'6 and the XL version - thoughts, comparison?  Thanks.
