Sunova SUP / which models would be best for this wave?
« on: November 21, 2017, 04:36:02 AM »

This is Tom on a very soft wavelet using an 8/10 speed in SDiego.

Once on the wave, would a Shroom or Skate or Longboard have more action?

Would a Shroom or Skate catch the wave as easily as he is doing?

Technique / More glide = less acceleration?
« on: May 23, 2015, 01:45:47 PM »
According to the Bert Berger video on board rocker and other topics at:
http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,27240.0.html

For a short time, a banana can outpace a rocket?

The less rocker, the less the acceleration of a board (even though it has more glide), whereas a more rockered board is in a lower/first gear,
AND the faster the less rockered board once up to speed, as if it were in 3rd gear.
All else somehow being equal.

Why is this?  Board weight would be one reason, board size another, but just rocker?

It would imply, when comparing how different boards best catch waves, the heavily rockered boards for advanced surfers should be better for last minute accelerations as the wave approaches, and less rockered boards require a less radical turn prior to wave arrival in order to maintain speed.

Board weight differences would favor the banana over the rocket, when weights differ.

The rockered catch would benefit from higher "revs." in a lower gear and no reason to paddle as much in advance of wave arrival.

Gear Talk / tried the new v-drive paddle from JL, QB?
« on: May 14, 2015, 12:47:25 AM »
Have been using an older 110 QBlade paddle in surf.
Tried a friend's smaller JLewis VBlade, probably 81 or 91 size and it was great.
Seemed easier to stroke, allowed higher frequency (lower gear equivalent) and great propulsion and easier on the board balance as well.

Any others tried this paddle?  Worth $499?

Does JL get his paddle from QB?

Technique / catching waves earlier
« on: July 08, 2012, 11:18:26 AM »
Have noticed that my percentage of catching waves, esp. small slow waves, goes up when turniing onto the wave, rather than from furiously paddling parallel to wave direction.

Certainly, when turning onto the wave, initially facing offshore and eventually having the wave impact from the side, one can see the wave better and time everything.

But it may also be more effective because of the sideways paddle action that opposes the wave.  It increases the cross section of the sup.  In the act of paddling to turn, the paddler pushes in a direction opposite to the motion of the board nose AND opposite to the direction of wave motion.  The fins contribute and are also being pushed toward the oncoming wave.  Also, the length of the board contributes to the wave force.  Perhaps, these surfaces reduce the chances that the wave will just pass the board by.

Has this aspect come up before in discussion?

Gear Talk / Compare Hull Ripper and Jammer
« on: February 29, 2012, 07:56:30 AM »
Both boards have innovative hull shapes, for a SUP.

Hull Ripper would seem less stable, or, would use a longer model

Carbon Jammer would be lighter, shorter

Which would paddle faster?

Which would be faster on the wave?  PSH claims radical turns with speed.

Would like to learn more, and from those who have tried them.

Gear Talk / Best long sup for small waves
« on: August 18, 2010, 03:07:18 PM »
Reviews on Ke Nalu of the JL Surf 10/8 indicate it catches waves well and turns too.

Which longer sup's that can turn in waves have the best glide?

Also, have the most speed on a small slow wave or mushy wave?

I assume it would have less rocker, plane early, be longer and narrower, and may have double concave with V in the tail.

Would one rule out a gun because it is too directional?  Or for another reason?

Gear Talk / Replacement for a 2007 Stbd 11/2
« on: August 06, 2010, 02:53:06 PM »
Used exclusively in surf at Pt S Carlos Baja.  175lb/6'2" WS'er uses it on some calm days.

Wondering what is the best replacement for my present Starboard 2007 11'2" Sportech, which is very stable but highly rockered.  Also, heavy with thick rails.

Have not really ever learned to turn the thing very well but do catch small and med waves on calm days.  It seems to require quite a lot of board walking and I miss many more waves than I catch.  Have very little success on big days or when sideoff wind starts.

Have the boards improved enough in the last 3 seasons to justify a new replacement?

How does the 2007 model compare?
