General Discussion / State of the market for aftermarket deck pads?
« on: June 28, 2023, 11:12:09 AM »
Hey everybody!

Recently I have become the ecstatic new owner of an 8'3 L41 ST. It's been a dream board for years and I finally found one! I'm thinking that the deck pad might need replacing at some point, and I have been down the rabbit hole trying to figure out what the best option is. I emailed L41, and they don't sell their pads as a separate item, so I am truly looking for an "aftermarket" pad.

I'm planning to replace the tail pad anyway because I am used to a kick tail and there is some decent wear there, and started wondering about what is currently the grippiest, best option for my board that is available. I'm looking at the GenRation pad (but they don't supply specs), FCS full deck pads are out of stock (and it seems like there are different models, but I can't tell), and the OAM and Creatures pads are too "longboardy" (aren't they?). I've got a mosaic type "frankenpad" on my other board, and I'd prefer to keep the L41 look with this replacement job.

Any advice? Anyone replaced your deck pad lately? What's the grippiest pad for surfing these days? Thanks in advance everyone!

Hello Zone!

My daughter (9) is getting to the age where she really wants to be paddling and surfing. What's an ideal board for her? I have mostly been unsuccessful at finding a decent all-arounder to fit her in either a decent price range new (and in stock) or preferably used.

Zoner parents, what did your kids start on? She is 85 lbs, and ideally, it would be a board she could prone surf or stand up full time as well as paddle streams and lakes with so she can learn as she goes and have lots of fun.

Is anyone making kids' boards these days? The Amazon inflatables all kind of look the same, but I'm hesitant. Thanks for any advice!

Gear Talk / Board bag for my 7'10"?
« on: June 23, 2019, 06:39:28 AM »
Hello Zone!

I could use some advice on finding a quality board bag for my 7'10 x 31.5 (7s Ubersmooth). Anyone with similar dimensions - what are you using? I'm looking for a day bag, but really anything that will fit my board.

I have used the Koredry topless cover in the past, but found that it didn't last long in the Florida sun and at highway speeds. I'd like a more durable solution (and some protection from flying stuff on the highway). The best bag I have found so far is a Gong bag (in France, of course, and with no standard shipping plan to USA). I can't find anything that will fit in stock here/ on a USA website.

Thanks for any advice!

SUP General / Alternative to Magicseaweed?
« on: July 28, 2013, 09:52:19 AM »
Yesterday, Magicseaweed totally had it wrong in my little piece of the world, Midcoast Maine. Popham was rocking at 3-5 with a few maybe bigger while Magicseaweed poster "1-2" all day.

I find that they are wrong more often than not.  I get my info from NOAA and the local marine buoys, but it would be nice to have one resource that provides all the data in one format.

Anybody else notice errors like this?  Anybody use an alternate surf data tool?

SouthEast / Duck, NC
« on: June 11, 2013, 08:02:33 PM »
I am headed to Southern Shores/ Duck this weekend for a week and I have a few questions for the Zone:

First, what is the likelihood that the Gulf Stream will push north and the water temp will even out at "warm".

Second, is there one spot better than another?  My plan is to surf the bar in front of my house in Southern Shores and check with the shops in the area, but is there a spot I ought to be aware of or a "must go" in the area?

Finally, is anyone in the Zone in the area? I would love to meet up with some folks for a session or two if possible.  If you paddle a short sup, all the better.

I posted a few weeks ago about some kind of sup surfing lessons aimed more towards intermediate or at least not beginners, and I'll look into that as well, though it seems like I may not find what I'm looking for there.

It's going to be a great week!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Duck, NC area surf lessons?
« on: April 30, 2013, 04:53:09 AM »
Hello Zone. I'm heading to Duck, NC in June and I am looking for some standup surfing instruction - if such a thing exists.  I've looked at the websites and it appears that what they are offering is a little too basic for me.

I've been stand up surfing for 3 years now and I'll being my own board.  What I'm looking for is footwork and wave catching coaching in decent waves, and starting to progress beyond "down the line" rides.

Thanks for any help.

SUP General / How do I know if I am in over my head?
« on: June 07, 2012, 05:40:52 AM »
So I've been attempting to ride a 7s UberSmooth since I bought it at Thanksgiving.  It is 7'10" by 31.5 by 4.5 thick.  I'm 5'6" and 195.  The board floats me fine in flatwater and I don't have any issues with it there.

I bought this thing to surf, and that is where I just can't get it figured out.  To be more specific, I can't stand up on the thing.  Granted everywhere I go, there is lost of cross wind, crossswell, reverberating waves, and chop.  I'm also still in my winter suit because it is Maine afterall and the water temp is only 52.

I knew there was going to be a serious step up for me, and I have been paddling it fairly infrequently due to work and family commitments, but I also don't seem to be making any progress.  I'm trying varied stances as much as I can.  It all works on flatwater, then I head to the beach and flail.

Does anybody have any wisdom?  I'm starting to wonder if I bit off more than I can chew with this board and I would love some advice.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Anybody have a Werner paddle snap on them?
« on: July 05, 2011, 05:06:00 AM »
So yesterday I was out at my local play spot - a reversing falls with a great surf wave.  I started to lose my balance at one point, threw a big brace and wiped out anyway.  When I popped up to the surface, my Werner Spanker had snapped right in two about 8 inches up the shaft from the blade.  No impact, didn't land on it, nothing...  just broken.

Needless to say the 3/4 mile paddle back to the car was exciting.  Has anybody else experienced shaft failure with Werners?  I think I'm covered by the warranty as it is not yet a year old and I've used in under 30 times (only half of that in surf).

Thanks for the feedback.
