Gear Talk / Red Paddle Co 9'6" Compact in the surf
« on: March 16, 2019, 01:55:01 PM »
Anyone use one of the newer Red Paddle Co 9’6” Compact models in the surf? I know that, in general, inflatable SUPs are not ideal for the surf, but this new 9’6” compact model looks ideal for use when doing a lot of traveling by plane, bus, train, and taxi. It packs down so small, it looks ideal for travel, but my concern when using in the surf is the fin placement so far back on the board. Great for tracking in flat water I suppose, but seems like it could hinder turning in the surf (?). Thoughts?

Gear Talk / Tom Carroll / Blane Chambers - "Outer Reef" Sup
« on: April 21, 2016, 11:31:49 PM »
Didn’t notice any posting about these boards, so I’m posting this.
Theses are the latest Tom Carroll / Blane Chambers collaboration from Global Surf Industries.
The Outer Reef 10’0 | 10’6 | 11’0 | 11’6.
These are insanely beautiful boards!!!

Gear Talk / KeNalu Quick Clamp Adjustable Shaft UD Carbon
« on: October 18, 2014, 02:10:47 PM »
I have a shoulder that sometimes gives me some problems and I’ve read a lot of comments about the xTuf(s) shafts being easy on the shoulders.
KeNalu has had their “Quick Clamp Adjustable Shaft UD Carbon” shaft available for a while now, but I haven’t seen much feedback. I like the idea of "one paddle fits all" and being able to adjust on-the-fly.
Anyone using one of these? How does it feel compared to an xTuf(s)?

Gear Talk / Coreban updated website.
« on: February 25, 2013, 09:04:18 PM »
Coreban finally updated their website. Looks good ( except the description on the “Dura Core Range” page). I like the looks of both the 9’3” Reactor and the 10’6” Echo.

I’ve got that analysis paralysis :( Think I’ve got it nailed down, then something else caches my eye, and I re-think what is possible. Can’t demo these boards.
Those of you that have made the move down in size from long, high volume boards, do you think it’s too big of a jump to go from 11’ x 31 x 4.25 190L board to a 9’8” x 29 x 4.5 136L board? Me, 5’10”, 170 lbs (s/b 160). Been paddling the 11’ for 3+ years. Surfed since I was a kid until old back injury stopped my prone surfing some 8 years ago. SUP paddling/surfing, no problem with the back.
Can’t afford to buy a new board with each transition from long to “short”, so now I’m thinking maybe just make the jump right to the size board I’d like to end up with. No desire to go really short. Still want to be able to do some flat water paddling, and I’m keeping the 11 footer.

SUP General / SUP in 1957.

Was watching this old movie from 1957 staring Alan Ladd and Sophia Loren (her American film debut) and was surprised when I saw the SUP in the background!

Gear Talk / Walmart SUP
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:49:52 PM »
[Walmart has been selling these for a few months now. Don’t know if they are just sold locally, or if they are at other Walmarts. They didn’t have any specks listed anywhere other than on the price sticker. 10’-$609. 9’3”-$580. They look like decent boards at a good price for someone just getting into SUP.

Gear Talk / Video of PSH hull rippers at big glassy left peak???
« on: August 29, 2011, 01:36:32 AM »
A few weeks (months?) back, someone put a link to a video of a group riding PSH hull rippers at an outside break in Hawaii. I believe they boated to the spot. It was a beautiful, fairly big, left peak in glassy conditions. A really amazing looking wave. I’ve done lots of searches to find the video, on this and other SUP sites, the PSH website, youtube, and vimeo and just can’t find the video. Anyone have a clue which video I’m speaking of and where I can find it?
Mahalo!!

Gear Talk / Suggestions on helmet for video. (not GoPro)
« on: August 12, 2011, 12:40:59 AM »
I have a waterproof Panasonic DMC-TS1 camera and I’d like to start taking some video when out paddling. Mostly flat water, but some small surf also. I figure helmet mounted would give the best POV. The Gath surf helmets are way too expensive.  What are you folks using? Any suggestions of a specific brand/model? I’m thinking of just getting a cheap bicycle helmet at WalMart.

Gear Talk / PSH Progressive Series 10-6 x 32 x 4 5/8
« on: November 04, 2010, 04:07:53 PM »
Anyone try out one of the newer Paddle Surf Hawaii Progressive Series bamboo veneer 10-6 Ripper Xtra Wide (10’6” x 32” x 4 5/8”)?
Haven’t seen any reviews/postings. From the look of the shape, I have no doubt that it surfs well, just wondering if this board would be strictly for surfing, or if one could get away with some short 1 to 2 hr flat water paddling as well.
