SUP General / ...leash positioning...
« on: January 12, 2019, 04:33:40 AM »
Greetings- haven't posted here in 5 years :o

Been out of the sup game for over 2 years mostly due to injury (hip)

Finally, had hip replacement surgery 1/4. Looking to get back on the water in spring.

Being away so long I noticed folks are wearing (flat water) leashes now on upper calf and waist. When I stopped paddling I remember everyone wore leash on ankle.

What gives?

Gear Talk / Scuba suit for SUS
« on: September 18, 2016, 04:50:42 AM »
So, back story: 55yo with bad flexiblity all over, have an increditably difficult time getting in and (especially) out of my 6/5/4 front zip suit. Love the warmth of the suit even in January, toasty as can be (and I run cold).

Has anyone ever SUS in two piece diver style suit? In small conditions would one expect too much flush? Seeing as how I have descent balance I spend little time in prone position so front zip shouldn't be an issue.

I SUS only in small Jersey conditions, I am acutely aware of my limitations and choose my days accordingly.

Found a 3mil john/jacket on CL for only $40, if it was closer I'd buy it in a second to try myself....but not sure I want to travel hundred miles for it.

Any feedback would be grand.....!

Greetings,

I used to do this race on a surfski- now I'm digging the sup thing and am considering making this my first sup race!!!  www.lighthousetolighthouserace.com

Anyone around the northeast plan on attending? I appears last year there were a handfull of sup in the 7 mile race and a couple in the 14 miler...

I'm heading up from jersey and hope its not a bust...

SUP General / Surfski convert?
« on: February 26, 2012, 03:10:01 PM »
Greetings all- first time poster here.....

Well, I am intrigued about this sport of SUP- after watching many videos it looks like I may want to give racing a try. It appears there is a growing interest in racing that exceeds kayak racing. Also, surfing looks to be a hoot- especially with the numerous crap days of small stuff here.

My story- I've been racing skis (v10) for many years- solid midpacker when in shape- have done all the big regional races (mayors cup, L2L, etc.), also train on a cleaver k1 to hone balance. I also play in the surf on occasion on a long board. One caveat, Love the speed of my ski.....

I been dealt a bad hip through 42 years of competitive basketball ( replacement in near future). The hip makes anything over a 2 hour race extremely painful- not being able to adjust sitting position in the cockpit causes the pain.

Questions:

1. How do the 14' race boards measure up for mph?

2. Coming from my ski background, what can I expect the learning curve for balance?

3. Is it true that racing is growing here in the northeast? Because kayak racing seems to going backwards in participation.

4. Is the racing more about the engine than the boat? As it is in kayak racing....

5. As I said I love the speed of downwind surfskis - will I get the same joy out of the sup given its slower speed?

Ultimitally , I would think I would like a 14' race board to paddle for fitness and race and a cheaper surfing board to have fun in the surf- thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Scott
