Classifieds / Looking for Axis Aluminum Mast
« on: April 14, 2022, 06:27:58 PM »
Anyone have one laying around that they want to part with? Just need the mast, ideally the 75 or 82 and the base plate, maybe the doodad.

I'm on a 4'8 right now, just getting good enough to pump out into two for ones. Is jumping on board 2 inches shorter going to do much to help my pump game? Or would it be better to order a narrower board instead so I don't catch rails on turns as easily?

So I'm looking for a new SUP foilboard, not entirely sure I want to start winging, but maybe I guess. I noticed the larger fanatic and quatro wing boards are really close to what I'm looking for size wise in the foil sup though. Are there any design choices (rocker, conclaves, etc. ) that make them unsuitable or less than ideal for sup foiling?

Gear Talk / 2021 Starboard Pro line-up is out
« on: September 14, 2020, 09:55:41 PM »
Hey, remember when we didn't just foil?
https://sup.star-board.com/hard-paddle-board/pro/
Starboard did a pretty big redesign of their pro and wide point (now wedge) ranges for 2021. Added significant volume to everything, which I've been bitching and begging for ages. I would have liked a slightly narrower tail personally, and the longboard box just ends up being a hassle imho, but pretty excited. Hopefully one of the shops here on Oahu brings some in so I can hold one in person.

The Shape Shack / Building for durability
« on: May 29, 2020, 05:17:52 PM »
What are people's current thoughts on materials and methods to use to make a "ding proof" custom surf sup board. Keeping the weight down is a plus, but it doesn't have to be featherweight either.

Foil SUP / Anyone play with 3d printing rear wings?
« on: October 30, 2019, 12:49:56 AM »
I've seen some of you guys running some great projects building main foil wings.
I've also seen the boys locally (and on Instagram) cutting down go foil tails into all sorts of shapes, to pretty good effect.
The new go foil tails, plus axis and a lot of other current gen foil tails seem like they would be relatively easy to 3d print and then glass. Has anyone done this? Am I missing something?

Foil SUP / Ke Nalu 970 first looks
« on: July 14, 2019, 11:16:11 PM »
So I got one of the first 970s in this weekend and only now had enough time to set it up. No ride review just yet, the south shore is firing right now and I'm still sup surfing on days when its this good. But I did want to drop some observations since information on these is thin and its hard to differentiate between all the foils on the market now. For whatever reason, it feels like manufacturers have all been really tight lipped about the subtle design choices and the thinking behind them.

The basic specs are on the website
https://kenalu.com/products/ke-nalu-970-coming-soon

As you might have noticed, the fuselage has been redesigned to accommodate the larger wing. This means just upgrading the wing is out of the question unfortunately. Note that it also runs a larger tail wing standard as well. The new fuselage feels lighter than the old one, but I don't have my old fuselage around to compare. All together, the whole set up feels really light, if there aren't the lightest on the market, its got to be close. The leading edge of the mast isn't nearly as sharp as the aluminum masts Naish and Gong use. I rest the mast on my shoulder when I carry my board, so that detail matters a lot to me personally.

Its really close in terms of footprint to the Maliko 200, and from the top they look really similar. Its whats going on on the underside that is pretty different. I wish I had a Maliko 200 with me for reference photos because I think that is what everyone is most familiar with.

I did take some shots with it next to my beloved Gong XXL and XL, some of the most basic and functional low aspect foils out there. Unfortunately, photographing a bunch of black objects next to each other on a camera phone is less than ideal, but at least it gives you something.

The new GLs coming out from Go Foil are much more radical high aspect. The Ke Nalu 970 is probably more what Piros called 'mid-aspect' on the last progression project podcast. Roughly, these are foils with aspect ratios in high fours (Like the Malikos) but with much thinner leading edges. You can see some of that in the photos. These 'mid-aspect' foils interest me because I'm not sure I'll ever be good enough to ride the high aspect foils. I want to foil at fun speeds on crap waves, I'm not going out there trying to hit 45 kph down the line.

Most notably, the bottom contours of the Ke Nalu are pretty complex. The center of the foil is almost as thick as those 1st gen downwinder foils, but the foil is more neutral. If my gongs where surf fins, they would be flat inside foils. The Ke Nalu is more like an 80/20. From the center, the foil thins out and the concave increases until it gets to the down turned tips. More than any other foil I have seem, its seems like the Ke Nalu is running a double concave, between that and the sharp down turned tips, it almost looks like an attempt to apply bonzer theory to foils.

All in all pretty interesting and a good reminder that foils that look similar across some important basic specs can still have a lot different going on. I'm excited to see how it rides.

Foil SUP / Foilboard volumes
« on: May 06, 2019, 07:42:53 PM »
How does the volume of your foilsups compare to the volume of your normal surfsups? Are you going up or down at all? Some of these new boards have crazy small dimensions. Are people dropping a ton of volume too, or are they just making the board way thicker?

The Shape Shack / What are the limits of step rails?
« on: March 24, 2019, 06:24:36 PM »
So way back in the day, Carl Schaper (2007?) stuck step rails on the old Southpoint Bonga Perkins SUPs, but it didn't exactly take the industry by storm.

The concept got worked into the Jammer from Supsports, but didn't make it into later models.

Sunnova has a super tweaked out version on the Shroom, but not any other model?

Now Portal is using it with all of their models, and infinity is rolling it out in the Blurr 2.0

It seems like such an obvious design choice that I'm wondering why it hasn't been more popular? Why not just shape 5 inch thick boards and step the rails down?

Foil SUP / Foil for a 240 lbs surfer
« on: December 08, 2018, 10:57:43 PM »
Okay, companies are rolling out foils faster than I can keep track, and announcing products that they don't actually have available even faster. My Ke Nalu 775 is about the same size as Go Foil's Iwa and I just can't get it up and flying unless the swell is pretty sizable. Most people I know around my size are riding a Maliko 200, but technically that foil isn't rated for the surf, or for people my size. I'm looking for a foil that is:

1) Available for order right now
2) Can lift a 240 lbs surfer in small surf (.8ft @ 9 sec)
3) Tuttle Mount
4) Not going to void my warranty by taking it in the surf

Is it out there and I'm just missing it, or am I dreaming?

Foil SUP / Stingray Decoy
« on: September 01, 2018, 04:30:55 PM »
So waiting between sets yesterday I saw some thrashing in the water outside the break and paddled a little close to investigate. As I get a little closer the thrashing stops and three dark object dart towards me. Three juvenile eagle rays circle around me a couple times and then swim off. Kinda a fun moment, I wonder how much they where actually confused by the shape of the foil. Anyone else have something like this happen?

Gear Talk / New fin for Naish 11-6 Gun
« on: December 27, 2017, 10:12:41 PM »
So I was able to pick up a used 11-6 gun for a song. The only trouble is that it came with no fin. What out there would work well for a single fin big wave board like the Hoku? Ive only ever seen them run with the stock fin.

Foil SUP / Tips for Big Guys?
« on: November 16, 2017, 05:05:53 PM »
Okay, I'm 230 lbs and I want to start foiling. What is a good foil for a guy my size? Is there anything on the market or am I up a creek?

Foil SUP / Clearwater Foil builds?
« on: September 19, 2017, 04:45:59 PM »
So I noticed that they officially had SUP spec foil fits at https://www.clearwaterfoils.com/

Has anyone done one of their builds yet? Have you been happy with the results?

Gear Talk / Guild Factor and Board thickness?
« on: June 07, 2017, 01:11:16 PM »
Okay, question for the masses out there.
Say you have two surfers on 8x28 boards. One board is 4 in thick and the other is 4.5, but the guild factor is the same since the second surfer is heavier. Assuming that our shaper is doing everything they can to optimize rail shape, what, if any, performance differences will the two riders experience?
